At its best Resurgence can feel like a good and fast paced multi part Star Trek episode with some good writing, better acting than you sometimes get from the shows, and where you see your choices come back in future scenes and alter the fates of certain characters. It can also feel a bit too rushed narratively in some areas, and at worse it really shows its low budget with the visual and technical look and feel, has terrible tacked on moments to add needless minigame and simplistic quick time gameplay segments, and has too many characters behaving in the overly childish unprofessional way that just makes it seem like the setting shouldn't possibly be giving this many Barclay and Trois an officer rank or letting them anywhere near a starship in the first place. You shift perspectives between the newly arrived former tactical officer turned Commander Jara Rydek and engineer Carter Diaz who both serve on the USS Resolute. Rydek is a half Kobliad whose species is on the verge of extinction and requires the rare material deuridium to stabilize their cell structure to prolong their life. She is arriving to a ship that recently saw an accident kill the previous 1st officer, to a Captain who is an old friend but is more worried about his career ending than performing his duties, a senior bridge officer upset he wasn't promoted, and whose first mission takes the Resolute through a dangerous storm on a diplomatic mission where two non-Federation races have a violent dispute over a mine that acts as one of the Federations largest sources of deuridium. Carter works with his friend and fellow engineer to keep the ship together and is pulled into increasingly dangerous missions that sees former colleges become enemies. Spock is assigned to oversee the peace talks and is handled and acted well. The opening conflict turns into a larger threat to the Federation when remnants of the Tkon Empire return that eventually has Riker and Portal 63 from an early episode of Next Generation offering assistance to the Resolute. The "game" moments are where things are at their worst. Dull or one off little minigames that you will probably be confused by the sudden instructions only to realize it is such a simple thing you can quickly get it on the first try anyway, your character saying they can't possible fight three unprepared enemies they can surprise only for five minutes later to engage in a prolonged firefight against eight enemies at once with waves of reinforcements coming. Carter somehow becomes instantly as competent as Jara and better than security team members and decades long soldiers in mass gunfights. Then there is just the random bad environmental interactions where you need to find the right things to scan with the tricorder. The first two or three being in the more logical position of being directly on and above the doors before they thought it would be funny to hang the next one in the middle of the ceiling and then to put the final one under a door and somehow attached to the partly opened door you crouch under that when shot opens the door on the other side of the room. QTE moments where you are given a long time to press a single direction or button with a big prompt on the screen, point and click or reach moments where the game basically just suddenly turns your mouse sensitivity down to nothing. It makes for a decent playthrough, though anytime it starts to do better than good or average in any one area something tends to happen to pull it back there. Recently removed from sale on all storefronts when the developer's license to distribute a Star Trek title having ended. Screenshots: https://bsky.app/profile/kennanw.bsky.social/post/3mnr3qyzans2b
A shockingly good TNG-era Star Trek story.
This could have come straight off the screen in the 1990s as a multi-part episode. It's a bold move to have two protagonists. Switching back and forth between two perspectives runs the huge risk of me getting sick of the one I like less and wanting to get back to my favorite. That didn't happen here. The story of Commander Jara Rydek rising to the occasion during a crisis on the bridge was such a contrast to PO2 Carter Diaz' story of practical problems and front line ingenuity that neither steps on the other's toes. The game cuts back and forth between the two over 40 brief chapters spanning 12+ hours, throwing both leads through a broad array of situations that keep things constantly fresh while all in service of a clear and focused plot. Choice and consequence make their mark. I never felt the power to derail the story entirely, but I didn't expect or want that. What I did get was the power of life and death, how to cope with risks, who earns their scars, who to make friends with, and who to piss off. Even when there was no mechanical impact, small decisions in conversation felt meaningful to me, and large decisions happened too. How much trust will you extend to a surrendering enemy? Is the mission more important than the safety of a crew member right in front of you? How do you respond when the captain gives you a problematic order? When the ship's doctor badmouths another officer, are you professionally detached or do you dish? Large or small, it's all great. The large cast of characters is well-written, engaging, and memorable. In short, I liked them. The villains are a little one-dimensional, but the crew of your ship and the allies you meet along the way have a variety of viewpoints and personalities, and there are even a few proper growth arcs. Gameplay mechanics are, well, bad. There are occasional gunfights, which are exciting but very poorly done. A few stealth sections fare a little better but are hardly good. Even dragging your cursor across the screen to press a key on a computer terminal is annoying because the mouse sensitivity is so low. It's all fine and I would absolutely not eliminate these sections, because again, the game does such a good job at pacing things up to keep momentum going, I can absolutely forgive that controls can be annoying. Yes, in this case, a bad combat section is better than not having any shootouts at all! Is it Star Trek? Yes, a thousand times yes. Resurgence strikes the perfect balance of optimism, integrity, and tragedy. A major theme of the franchise, maybe THE main theme, is sticking to your ideals even when they have obvious bad consequences. Video games in general reward moral behavior - most of the time, the material rewards for being good are at least as good as what you get for being bad. The writers here made a strong effort, and succeeded at making decisions feel real. You are encouraged to be moral, but there is no sugar coating. A LOT of good people get hurt over the course of this story no matter what you do. If anything, this story is unusually dark for Star Trek, which I hope you'll agree is vastly preferable to a childish "happy ending". They really strike that balance of grim and hopeful that is pure Trek. At the time of this writing, Resurgence is not for sale due to licensing issues. If you are a fan of the Telltale game style, or a fan of Star Trek, or both (like me), you owe it to yourself to find a copy anyway. Easily worth $20, maybe even up to $30 depending on how much of a Trekkie you are. Don't miss this.
The story is great but the gameplay is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Star Trek: Resurgence is a good Telltales like game. Love Star Trek!
Amazing Game.
gameplay wasn't that great but the story was decent.
It's not really much like playing a game as it is like watching a Star Trek movie, but the overall experience is very enjoyable.
For the first time in 20 years, I feel like I see into a window of the real Star Trek universe again, not alternate or rebooted timelines. This game also captures living in the universe like no other. I can't believe it took 60 years for a game to simulate what it would be like to live and work in Star Trek. This is basically Star Trek's answer to Mass Effect. Yes, it's lower budget, but the characters and story are top-notch and the decisions and relationships invoke Mass Effect feeling. There are moments of tension and moments of deliberation and reflection. Clearly written and made by true Star Trek fans. I consider this canon. Minor complaints: -Missed opportunity to make most Starfleet aliens, since it costs no make-up -Good relation with people should make the mission more successful, i.e. less casualties or bonus choices/abilities -In general I would have liked more gamification and "systemicness", it's leans more into visual novel than into a game -Quite some plotholes -No need to get Spock. Any ambassador would have been fine. -Stakes were getting too high with too many deaths, I would have been perfectly fine saving one small alien system
No prostě Sodoma Gomora. Aby to bylo otravné násobně více, tak si autoři řekli "hmm, zabavíme hráče neustálými interaktivními prvky, aby se během těch dlouhých kecacích pasáží nenudil". Čili uprostřed dialogu či vyhrocené scény se co chvíli vše zastaví a čeká se až vykonáte mikrotask ve stylu zmáčkni dekodér, rozsviť, nascanuj apod. Což vždy děláte jedním tlačítkem/páčkou, na základě obřího nápisu přes celou obrazovku "podrž páčku doleva" a trvá to sotva vteřinu. A nikdo to neřeší.
Clunky slow controls with too many shootout sequences that last too long but with the licensing agreement I assume the devs didn't really feel like putting in a ton of effort into a game they knew was gonna get pulled from shelves less than two years after release.
