Spirit Hunter: NG is a horror focused visual novel. A rebellious teenager finds himself playing a game of death that involves hunting angry spirits. Thematically, it's top tier. The look of the game, the writing, the concepts behind mechanics, plot etc. I'm-all in. They even have OPTIONAL "Scary Mode" settings that allow for pop up jump scares during investigations. I've set it to the scariest level and while its not particularly scary for me, it's a nice touch. A little surprise every hour puts a smile on my face. Storywise, it's worth mentioning the the MC is a strong character of his own, not a blank slate to inhabit. He's kind of a good-hearted delinquent with a rough exterior. If you know anime, you know the type. This works fine in anime or stories, but leads to a bit of a disconnect when I disagree with his actions. Sometimes it feels like you're tagging along rather than on the investigations. Overall though, this side of things is good and IF I complete this game the story and theme will be why. Because what I'm about to talk about is actually bad. The "Game". Spirit Hunter has a series of special choices that occur during times to threat. Think of it either a quick action to survive or a ritual performed to exorcise a ghost. Each event is a string of 1 to 5 different actions that need to be performed. Conceptually this is fantastic because it adds a real sense of danger to the events... but the implentation here SUCKS. Take for example one of the first choices in the game. The main character says "I need to get out of here without drawing attention to myself." - The answer is not... "Hide and try to blend in with the crowd" that's a game over. - The answer is not... "Talk your way out of it"... thats a game over. - It's "Run as fast as you can" The problem is that you're forced to make life or death decisions with limited to no clues as to the the correct option. This got ALOT worse when I needed to face off with a ghost where I needed to use 1 or 15 items, in the correct of 5 locations, for 3 different scenes in a row! It's like Phoenix Wright but every wrong choice forces you back 3 minutes. It's just too punishing without nearly enough information and it's lacks the ability to "Save anytime" so if I die on the third scene of an escape... it resets me all the way back to the beginning. It's frustrating and it's annoying and that makes me so sad. There's a decent chance that I'm going to try and finish this game because I do like the story, but having finished my first case... I'm definitely going to welcome walkthroughs and cheating my way through.
Akira Kijima is sooo OP Baddie!
This is the sole evidence that the sequel is done right! Following the first death mark game we get the second one that follows a very fiesty protagonist along with a different doll this time and solving mysterious supernatural cases. There will be some comparisions with the first one in my writeup. Story: Execution perfection! This story has mainly three endings, the story is altered widely through the survival of your friends. Because even though the protagonist is strong, we need friends ok and it affects our mental health. Following the strange abduction of her cousin sister, Akira and his friends embark a perilious adventure to save her and fighting various supernatural entities driven by another doll. I thought the same concept being revisited would be boring, but no it has twists and turns and at the very last fight, you get the most utmost plot twist in your life. Just as the previous one you get deep into the lore of each entity and each of them are in unique settings, like there is a spirit that haunts the offices too. Main settings are: park, village, house, office and another dimension. Characters: PEAK The characters here are the most memorable, you literally and lovingly get attached to the protagonist and his friends. The bond between Amanome and Akira is so precious, it also felt natural. You find some adult characters too like a mysterious thief lady or the extortionist journalist. I wished that there would be more screentime with any of the protagonists from the first one, there is but in one of the endings. Teamwork is dreamwork, Akira is a aloof, silent person. The kid is strong af, do not fear ghosts at all. I really love strong characters like this. Character development here is very good, how they interact with each other is so natural. Amanome is cool, funny, goofy guy who fears ghosts. Then Hazuki has a secret identity. Gameplay: Interesting! I was expecting the same elements of the first one, but im so glad they added some nice polishing to it. You gather items, explore, you can move around using arrow keys. The fight scenes are not so difficult as the previous game, but crisis choices can be difficult. But hey because of my appreciation of the game I did make a guide for anyone who needs it! You also can choose to reduce the jumpscares of the game if you are wimp, but the mode choosing is nice ngl. The puzzles are nice also. The D-man segment is a very interesting challenge, I really thought that was creative. I really loved the fact that they added a feature to explore the main character's room too, interact with kitchen, bedroom etc. With demon fights you can choose to destroy or purify them. You might need to collect special items for that. Art and music: POLISHED Compared to the first one the art and music is on a next level, with art looking more modern and vibrant, and the music, especially Hazuki's wandering rabbit is amazing! It's such a catchy tune. Loved the ending credit theme too. Sometimes however I noticed a minor glitch that audio being stuck on playing on a loop on top of other audio, a restart can solve the problem. Achievements: Might take some time Didn't have problems with most achievements, I liked the way the achievements were worded as if the villain is commenting on your choices. You get an achievement for destroying and purifying the demons, so saves are necessary. Collecting all the D-man cards will give you achievements also. What is time consuming is getting the endings. There are many variations as there are so many characters. Overall I really enjoyed playing this, you feel a sense of belonging in this visual novel. It is a sequel done right for the first one and already there has been a third part released in a school setting, so can't wait to play that too!

Spirit Hunter: NG, developed by EXPERIENCE in collaboration with Ghostlight LTD and published by Aksys Games, is a horror visual novel that leans heavily into psychological tension, methodical investigation, and emotionally grounded storytelling. Rather than relying on constant jump scares or action-heavy sequences, it builds its identity around slow-burning dread and the weight of player decisions. Set against the backdrop of 1990s Tokyo, the game follows a troubled protagonist drawn into a series of supernatural incidents, each tied to restless spirits with deeply tragic origins. From the outset, it becomes clear that the experience is as much about understanding these entities as it is about surviving them. The gameplay blends traditional visual novel storytelling with investigative segments that require careful observation and interaction. Players spend much of their time reading dialogue and absorbing narrative details, but progression often hinges on exploring environments, examining clues, and using items in the correct context. These investigative moments introduce a layer of engagement that prevents the experience from becoming entirely passive, encouraging players to think critically about their surroundings. A standout mechanic allows the protagonist to perceive lingering memories tied to certain objects or locations, offering insight into past events while also serving as a key tool for solving cases. This fusion of narrative and interaction helps maintain a steady sense of involvement throughout the game. One of the defining features of Spirit Hunter: NG is its emphasis on consequence-driven choices. At various points, players are confronted with high-pressure decision sequences where the outcome can drastically alter the story. These moments are often timed, forcing quick thinking under stress, and the consequences of failure can be severe, ranging from character deaths to abrupt endings. This system creates a persistent sense of unease, as even seemingly minor decisions carry weight. It also encourages players to remain attentive and cautious, reinforcing the game’s overarching tension and making each successful outcome feel genuinely earned. The narrative itself is one of the game’s strongest elements, unfolding through a series of interconnected cases that gradually build toward a larger, more personal story. Each investigation introduces a new spirit, complete with its own history and motivations, often rooted in loss, trauma, or unresolved emotions. Rather than portraying these entities as purely malevolent, the game frequently explores their humanity, giving context to their actions and adding emotional depth to each encounter. This approach transforms the horror into something more nuanced, where fear is intertwined with empathy, and resolution often feels bittersweet rather than triumphant. Visually, the game makes a strong impression through its detailed and often unsettling artwork. Character portraits are expressive and grounded, while the spirits themselves are depicted with striking, sometimes grotesque imagery that lingers in the mind. The use of static scenes is offset by careful composition and lighting, creating moments that feel tense and immersive despite the lack of animation. The sound design further enhances this atmosphere, using subtle audio cues and an understated soundtrack to build anticipation. While the music is not always memorable on its own, it effectively supports the tone, ensuring that the sense of dread remains consistent throughout. The episodic structure of the game helps maintain a clear sense of progression, with each case offering a distinct scenario while contributing to the overarching narrative. This format allows for variety in both storytelling and gameplay, as different spirits require different approaches to resolve their presence. However, the pacing can occasionally feel uneven, particularly during sections that rely heavily on exposition or trial-and-error problem solving. Some solutions may not be immediately intuitive, which can lead to moments of frustration, especially for players unfamiliar with the genre’s conventions. Despite these minor drawbacks, Spirit Hunter: NG stands out as a deeply atmospheric and emotionally resonant horror experience. It doesn’t attempt to overwhelm players with constant action or spectacle, instead focusing on building tension through storytelling, character development, and meaningful choices. The game rewards patience and attention to detail, offering a narrative that unfolds gradually but leaves a lasting impression. In the end, Spirit Hunter: NG succeeds by committing fully to its vision of interactive horror. It blends investigation, decision-making, and narrative depth into a cohesive experience that feels both unsettling and engaging. While its deliberate pacing and heavy reliance on text may not appeal to everyone, those who appreciate slow-burning horror and character-driven storytelling will find it to be a compelling and memorable journey.
