Perfect for those who love a story-rich game where you can either follow the main quest line or explore to find some hidden secrets to enrich the story :)

This was my first time playing a game like this. I HIGHLY recommend. Go slow, take your time, and discover everything. You will be glad you did in the end.
There are games that come at just the right moment in your life -- and touch you in a way you will never forget. Spiral is forever in my heart as one of those games. In Spiral, we walk alongside Bernard, a writer struggling to hold on to his most cherished memories. We get to experience Bernard’s story through 5 different chapters of his life -- helping him reconnect with the memories of his loved ones while navigating his increasingly unstable mind space. As we progress further into Bernard’s mind, the cognitive degeneration begins to alter his perspective. Affecting everything from Bernard's narration -- to how he interacts with the world. There are moments when a memory will visibly slip out of reach. We feel every bit of Bernard's confusion, frustration, and heartbreak as he struggles to remember the moments he held most dear. At times, Bernard's uncertainty had me questioning my own memory of the details, which encouraged me to pay even closer attention. Things I loved about this game:

genuine dialogue
charming characters
full of funny banter
& lots of pop culture references
chanting in latin!
There were so many moments when Bernard's narration touched me so much that I wanted to leap through my monitor and give him a hug.

the musical score
deeply emotional and immersive atmosphere
should be experienced with headphones!

Spiral is peppered with fun mini games including
math monster
turn-based combat
lockpicking
fishing [\list] These puzzle often offer a humorous reprieve from the heavier parts of the story. Each mini-game has it's own set of challenges, but are relatively easy to navigate. Some of my favorite moments are during the tabletop C&C games. The miniature world was such a cool storytelling device that further immerses the player into the imagination of Bernard and each of his friends. Anyone taking this journey is highly encouraged to take their time and interact with the environment at every opportunity. Not only are there some gorgeous scenes -- it not always clear where an interaction will take you. Move too fast and you might miss out on some cute -- and heartfelt -- moments. Speaking of cute & heartfelt -- Careful eyes are sure to spot the Indie dev easter eggs scattered around the world. I will admit that I didn’t know all of the studios but I was happy to see at least one very familiar face lurking in the shadows. Its always great to see indie devs supporting one another and these collectibles were a super rad way to do it. Our journey took roughly ~10 hours to complete, but I finished the story with only 15/32 achievements -- and yes, I do plan to go back for the rest. Spiral is not your typical third-person narrative -- it is a moving glimpse into life with cognitive degeneration through the eyes of the person experiencing it. It's an opportunity to walk in the shoes of a loved one who might not have the words to explain what they are going through --and a poetic reminder to savor the happy moments because memory -- like life -- is fleeting. This game was exactly what I needed when I needed it most -- and I can't thank Folklore Games enough for asking me to be a part of telling Bernard's story.
Very boring and tedious. The movement is unreasonably slow and clunky. Story is not engaging. If you make game about old people don't make the player become one.
First, I want to mention how fun this game is: from fishing to investigating to occasional (and very original) turned-based combat, it was awesome! I had a blast throughout. Second, I have to say: the dialogue, art design, music and voice acting are all great, and they work together well to create a moving tale. Now that that's all said, I want to spend most of my time here on what I think is the game's crowning achievement: its unique narrative structure and the way it plays with narration and perspective. The game starts off as a wholesome coming-of-age story, but one that's mediated by nostalgia throughout: we are Old Bernard, looking back on his life and his time as Young Bernard. At first, the relationship between the Remembering Self and the Remembered One is straightforward and even ideal, but then... At about the halfway point, things start to change. Things get real story-spicy! I won't spoil what form these changes take, but I do want to say that they add up to the most masterful parts of the game for me: they make not just those parts, but the entire 10 hours of the game worth your time (and your 30 dollars) without question. Spiral conveys the experience of living with cognitive degeneration not just by having Bernard talk about it, but rather by making you experience it with him. It'll always stand as an important and innovative narrative game thanks to this willingness to go the extra mile in its goal of using story to generate empathy.
