Spelp is a roguelite twin-stick shooter developed and published by Yawee that blends fast-paced arena combat with a surprisingly engaging squad-building system. Set in a colorful science-fiction universe overrun by hostile alien forces, the game tasks players with surviving relentless enemy attacks while steadily strengthening their character through upgrades, weapon enhancements, and rescued allies. Although its premise is familiar to fans of the survival-action genre, Spelp manages to distinguish itself through its emphasis on assembling a team rather than focusing solely on a single hero. The core gameplay revolves around entering dangerous arenas, eliminating waves of enemies, and collecting upgrades that shape each run. Controls are simple and responsive, making it easy for newcomers to jump directly into the action. Despite the straightforward mechanics, the game maintains a satisfying level of depth through its upgrade choices. Every level gained presents opportunities to customize a build, whether through offensive improvements, defensive bonuses, or unusual special abilities. This constant stream of progression keeps the action rewarding and encourages experimentation across multiple playthroughs. One of the game's strongest features is its roster of playable characters and recruitable allies. Each character possesses distinct weapons and abilities that can dramatically alter how a run unfolds. As players rescue additional members during missions, they gain access to new strategic possibilities and powerful combinations. Building an effective squad becomes almost as important as personal survival, adding an extra layer of decision-making that separates Spelp from many other games in the genre. Discovering synergies between characters, upgrades, and weapons provides much of the game's replay value. The progression system offers a healthy variety of enhancements that can significantly transform gameplay. Certain builds focus on overwhelming enemies with rapid-fire attacks, while others rely on area damage, utility skills, or powerful special effects. Because upgrades appear in different combinations each run, no two sessions feel exactly alike. The excitement of creating an unexpectedly powerful build remains one of the game's most compelling qualities and helps maintain player interest even after repeated attempts. Spelp features multiple environments that encourage different approaches to survival. One mode allows players to explore and rescue additional teammates, creating a sense of growth throughout the run. Another offers a more confined and intense challenge where survival depends entirely on efficient combat and resource management. This variety helps prevent repetition and demonstrates thoughtful design despite the game's relatively modest scale. The inclusion of boss battles further enhances the experience, introducing challenging encounters that test both player skill and build effectiveness. Visually, the game adopts a retro-inspired pixel-art style that complements its arcade-like gameplay. The presentation prioritizes clarity, ensuring players can track enemies, projectiles, and important effects even when the screen becomes crowded with action. The futuristic setting, combined with alien adversaries and advanced weaponry, creates a cohesive atmosphere that suits the game's energetic pace. While the graphics are not especially ambitious, they effectively support the gameplay and maintain a charming indie identity. The game's limitations become more noticeable during extended play. Compared to larger entries in the arena-survival genre, Spelp offers a smaller amount of content, and experienced players may eventually wish for additional maps, enemies, or progression systems. However, the quality of the gameplay loop largely compensates for these shortcomings. The focused design avoids unnecessary complexity and delivers entertaining sessions that are easy to revisit. Overall, Spelp succeeds as an enjoyable and addictive roguelite shooter that combines accessible action with meaningful customization and team-building mechanics. Its satisfying combat, diverse character roster, and strong replayability make it an appealing choice for fans of survival-focused indie games. While it may not have the expansive content library of the genre's biggest names, it offers enough creativity and depth to carve out its own identity. Players looking for a fun and challenging sci-fi roguelite will find plenty to appreciate in this compact but well-crafted experience. Rating: 8/10
good fun little game, hope to see more updates
Another game in the Survivors-like genre for me to play, great! Well, let's get this out of the way: if you're looking for something fresh in the genre, this isn't the game for you. It does basically nothing new, BUT, it does what the genre does well and I've been having fun with it regardless because I'm a huge fan of the genre. So that being said, I recommend buying on sale if you're a big fan of the arena shooter/Survivors-likes; you know what you're getting yourself into... and if you're looking for a Brotato-like break in convention then you'll be disappointed.
One of the most boring games of this genre I've played, in this price range at the very least. One may argue that it gets better as you progress, but expect some boring gameplay for a good while at first. I personally can't bother.
Pog!
Fun bullet hell
Promising game but it seems to be abandoned. While other games in the genre receive frequent updates, this one hasn't had one in over two months.
For 4,99€. This is a steal. Game is great. Play smooth. Is simple but sometimes challenging. Looking forward for more updates or DLC. Really interesting title.
Its a fun time waster. I feel like I got my moneys worth.
Not very great, not bad, about 10 hours till you have almost everything. Its okay for a low price.
