Fast, silly, loud, fun. Can't add much, I am freaking enjoy it. It's also deceptively hard even though it flows very well. Getting all those crystals it's not trivial. Crazy good and hilarious visuals too!
Speedollama is a wonderfully unhinged side-scrolling shooter that proves indie developers can still find fresh ideas within familiar genres. Developed and published by Chaosmonger Studio, the game throws players into an outrageous conflict where an ancient llama calls upon mercenaries to repel an invading alpaca force determined to wipe out its species and dominate the planet. It is a premise that sounds absurd on paper, yet Speedollama embraces that absurdity with confidence, creating an experience that feels equal parts retro action game and animated comedy. Rather than attempting to tell an emotionally complex story, the game focuses on delivering a nonstop barrage of explosions, jokes, and fast-paced action that immediately establishes its identity. At its core, Speedollama is built around momentum. Every level encourages players to keep moving, mowing down enemies while navigating environmental hazards and collecting upgrades along the way. The influence of classic run-and-gun titles is impossible to miss, but Chaosmonger Studio manages to avoid simple imitation by injecting its own personality into every encounter. The campaign spans multiple biomes filled with procedurally generated stages, ensuring that no two runs feel exactly alike. This design choice works particularly well because it complements the game's emphasis on replayability, rewarding players who return to uncover hidden areas, complete bonus stages, and experiment with different approaches. The game's arsenal and progression system add meaningful variety to the experience. Players can choose between multiple characters, each bringing their own flavor to combat, while an assortment of weapons and unlockable upgrades helps tailor individual playstyles. Whether favoring overwhelming firepower or focusing on mobility, there is enough flexibility to make each playthrough feel distinct. Enemy variety is equally impressive, with everything from armed alpaca soldiers to towering machines and gigantic creatures standing in the player's way. Boss encounters serve as highlights throughout the adventure, often blending spectacle with chaotic attack patterns that demand quick reflexes and adaptability. Visually, Speedollama succeeds by understanding what makes pixel art appealing. Its environments are colorful, expressive, and packed with small details that reinforce the game's comedic tone. Explosions are exaggerated, animations are fluid, and the overall presentation captures the spirit of arcade-era action while benefiting from modern hardware. The soundtrack keeps pace with the action, delivering energetic tracks that help maintain the game's frantic rhythm. Despite the chaos on screen, the visual design generally remains readable, which is an important accomplishment for a game that frequently fills the battlefield with enemies, bullets, and environmental effects. Perhaps the title's greatest achievement is its commitment to its ridiculous concept. Speedollama never attempts to justify its strange world with excessive exposition. Instead, it fully commits to the image of heroic llamas charging headfirst into battle against an alpaca empire. That unwavering dedication gives the game a charm that many retro-inspired projects struggle to achieve. It feels like a developer having fun with an idea and inviting players to join in rather than chasing trends or trying to reinvent the medium. The humor remains lighthearted throughout, helping the experience maintain an energetic tone from beginning to end. The game is not entirely without flaws. Procedural generation occasionally produces levels that feel less memorable than handcrafted counterparts, and newcomers may find its relentless pace intimidating during the opening hours. Some players might also wish for a larger selection of weapons or a lengthier campaign. However, these shortcomings are relatively minor when weighed against the game's strengths. Speedollama understands its target audience and consistently delivers what it promises: a fast, entertaining, and delightfully bizarre run-and-gun adventure. In the end, Speedollama stands as an excellent example of how creativity and enthusiasm can elevate a familiar formula. It combines old-school gameplay sensibilities with modern conveniences and wraps everything in a package overflowing with personality. Fans of arcade shooters, pixel art, and offbeat humor will likely find themselves pleasantly surprised by what Chaosmonger Studio has created. It may not redefine the genre, but it does something equally valuable—it reminds players how enjoyable pure, uncomplicated fun can be. Rating: 8/10
Cool little game, about super-soldier llamas and ultracide pixelated violence. I really enjoyed it, despite the alpaca murders. As the game reminds you at the beginning, remember they’re just pixels and enjoy!
Great, polished pixel art and animation. The guns feel really good and the overall aesthetic is very nice and consistent. Reminds me a lot of metal slug or alien rampage mixed with dead cells
If you like alpacas, it's possible you could have a bad time. It's a pretty good time though lol.
You want guns and grenades on the go with the most challenging gameplay in a Llama? Gallop on in the sights of your enemy and run, jump and shoot a lot for the good fight!
Don't waste your time on this game. Pros: - Very nice spritework. - The bones for a decent run n' gun are there. Cons: - Everything else.
