A game based on chess, putting "tactical" right in its name, should not set up levels that are only possible because, without prior notice, you'll suddenly get reinforcements on a later turn. Generally, games based around a concept of precise calculation (such as chess) should not be built around unwarned surprises. This has chess mechanics regarding mobility and captures, so planning moves and countermoves must be the core mechanic of the game. Denying perfect information simply cuts the heart out of chess. What's the point of careful calculation if undisclosed events will prevent it from working? What's the point of a chess-like game if you aren't *allowed* to plan your moves substantially in advance? The strategic portion of chess, for general reasoning about board control, is all well and good, but it serves to set up positions likely to lead to tactical opportunities in the future. Diddling around with no rational goal in a clearly lost position is not strategic, it's trusting that the developer has decided that this is yet another time their game is unlike chess. So it fails at being chess, but it doesn't bring with it anything that would make decisions interesting or meaningful, so it also fails at being not-chess. Fail.

Chessaria is a very enjoyable game by itself, but coupled with the game of chess not only do you have an enjoyable game you also have an incredible tool for learning strategy and abstract thinking to help improve your chess game. The game play is smooth and the graphics are beautiful. The ambient music is soothing and adds to the puzzles as you think your way through each one of the different challenges presented to you in a fantasy world environment. The concept of strategy is encouraged between each cut scene with quotes displayed in bold lettering on a black screen from notable military tacticians, philosophers, and chess grandmasters adding to the gravity of what you are really developing when you play Chessaria, a better ability to play chess.
It's got great production value, great characters, great costumes, great voices. I just wish there was an adventure game behind it. Unfortunately it's just...chess. But more succinct it's chess puzzles so you only have SOME pieces available in each puzzle. That COULD sound neat...but it isn't. Oh yes, this company removed a ton of achievements from the game after many people already had them.
It's basically fine but very quickly the jank begins to show. Achievements don't pop when they should, selecting levels from the world map doesn't give any information about what the levels are, for some inexplicable reason one can't play a 1P vs AI game as black... If you want a fantasy/Tolkien/Warcraft-themed chess game built around a series of puzzles and funky variants you might be better off with Battle vs Chess (aka Check vs Mate). It's not any better than this but when sales come around it's significantly cheaper.
adieu :)
Despite what steam says, this runs fine on macOS 10.15+ and even on latest macOS 12.2 with M1 chip (with Rosetta 2, the executable is x86_64) I see 3D fantasy with gorgeous artwork + chess, I buy. It looks and play good, my only gripe so far is the fact that you cannot play as black vs AI which is a pity.
