Played On: HTC Vive
In Space Dragon, you no longer have arms, but instead two baby dragons that are ready to blast away at enemy forces and destroy planets. The game is a semi-retrowave/synthwave/vaporwave themed space shooter, where your ultimate goal is to wipe out the master planet by eliminating the surrounding planets that power its forcefield. However, those planets are guarded by foes that can shoot right back at you. There are five levels in total, and at the end of each there is a huge boss waiting to be battled. The movement in this game is commendable, as it's one of the few space titles that haven't given me motion sickness; and for the record, I do not get motion sickness easily. To move, you simply press on the directional pad and move your hand in the direction that you want to go; you can also turn incrementally using the grip buttons if you don't have enough space to turn around. You and your dragons also have the ability of warp speed, but while moving in this manner you're unable to shoot which is a bummer. The stock movement speed is a bit too slow as well, it could use a small boost. Although Space Dragons is rather short with little to no replayability factors, coming in at around 45-60 minutes, it's an intense experience while it's happening; especially during the final couple of battles. There's very little difficulty and the gameplay is rather easy, but the challenge is that if you die, you start over from the beginning of the level. Healing yourself comes in to play by destroying small planets and gathering their blue or purple crystals. Space Dragons is one of the more unique virtual reality titles to come along. The galaxy maps are both beautiful and relaxing to look at, but the gameplay is hectic and fast-paced. At the end of it all, you even get a boss gallery to mess around in where you can check out the enemy models up close and personal, complete with their theme songs. Speaking of, the soundtrack here is fantastic. As fun as it is, it's hard to justify the pricetag of $16.99 CAD for less than an hour of content. Grabbing it for $10.99 or less on sale is your best bet. I am going to make the argument that you need this game in your life. Prepare yourself for my evidence: 1. Your hands are planet-destroying dragons. In the early days of gaming, that would have been argument enough, but these days, gamers are a grim and experienced bunch. You need more. I understand. 2. If you are like me, i.e. uneasy with movement in VR, this game somehow lets you whip around the damn galaxy at warp speeds eating planets and it doesn't feel, you know, barfy. It's feels GREAT. And that brings me to: 3. Movement. Man, it's so good. Intuitive as hell. Five minutes after you start, you'll be streaming through the stars, burning planets to dust, freeing massive spacefish from space prisons, dodging lasers, and it just feels SMOOOOTH. Plus: 4. Dragon Hyperspace. It's rad. 5. Also, bosses. They're huge, spooky, and pretty as hell. 6. SPEAKING OF PRETTY, the health bar thing is cool. You should see it. I won't spoil it 7. Last and most important, you can make the dragons smooch. In summary, you should get this game if: * You've ever wanted to be a dragon. * You've ever wanted to fly. * You've ever wanted to be in space. * You hate planets and space fortresses. * You like freeing giant space monsters. * You like games. Thank you.
I wish more VR games were like this! The art direction and graphics on this game are fantastic! I love zipping around space. Going to warp is very satisfying. The potential for this game is very high. The only negative is that its very short. I beat it in around 45 minutes. Feedback/Suggestions: MOVEMENT: Took me awhile to figure the best movement strategy. Hold down the movement button on your dominant hand. This will make your other hand the movement hand. At first I found this super weird, but it actually works rather well. So for me its hold down fire with my right hand, along with the movement button. Also hold down the fire button on the left hand, but use the left hand to move left or right. This means you are not always hitting your enemies with both guns, but you can circle around them and dodge their attacks, which is super fun. BUGS: The octopus bosses voice was coming from behind me instead of from the boss. (sound issue). SUGGESTION: WARP Going to warp is satisfying. I noticed the rocks that are flying by me at super speed are barley visible. You may want to slow them down, or make the rocks bigger, so they are more visible. I wish I could shoot while in warp. I love the super speed! I think there should be a mini warp for combat that speeds you up for a 2nd or two. This would be fun. SUGGESTION: DRAGONS The dragons look amazing. I think they need powerups. Either permanent ones or temporary, either works. I also think the dragons should have different abilities. One is going to be the main firing gun, while the other is used for movement/dodging. I think the dragon being used for movement needs a different attack, maybe a heat seeking missile or a shotgun blast. This would work well with the way movement works in the game. I think it would be AMAZING if the dragons had personalities. They could comment on how bad or well you are doing. If you kill a boss or kill many enemies quickly without taking damage, they could high five each other. This would be great. SUGGESTION: DIFFICULTY I hope there are more levels coming. At times it was too easy. I think increasing the speed of movement along with the speed of the player’s bullets would be good on harder difficulties, along with more enemies. SUGGESTION: Grip buttons I am a VIVE player so the quick side looking did nothing for me. I think it would be better if these buttons made your character side step rapidly, or made you fly to the left or right, so you can orbit planets and enemies easier. SUGGESTION: MINI WARP I dont see a reason to ever stand still in this game, so you may want to have movement on all the time. This would free up the current movement button for a mini warp rush in combat, which would be very satisfying, and keep holding both movement buttons to charge up to a full warp. I really like this game. Well done!
While this game is very short, I liked it. Was a bit scared for the final battle, but thankfully it went much better than I thought. Surprisingly, despite travelling in a full 3D space (first time in my experience), I experienced almost no motion sickness, so it's a big plus!
Visually stunning. This wasn't on sale, when I bought it, and not regretting it. Hold up your dragons in front of your face for added effect. The only drawback is that your 'real' Vive controllers will look boring once you get out of the game, but I've named them 'Pinky' and 'Giorgio Moroder Bobellow', anyway.
Unusual and innovative way to tackle movement in VR. And yes, there sill be dragons. Short but fun, well worth the price.
Fun short VR game. You fly through space as neon dragons and blow up planets. I'm pretty sensitive to nausea in VR but I was fine playing this.
To be honest, I only bought the game because of the name, but im really glad I did! It's a lot of fun, but using the oculus touch controllers to play this kind of hurts because it uses the button mapping of the vive wands... Otherwise I definitley recommend this game.
It's a cool idea, but it's too short and very repetitive. I finished the entire game in less than 40 minutes, and it felt like all I was doing was strafing around a point with one dragon and firing with the other. I would have enjoyed some power unlocks and more story. The dragons could differ from each other more than just being different colors.
