I was following this game back when I saw the announcement trailer but I didn't get around to playing it until recently and I am so happy I finally sat down and played it. The art style is gorgeous, the soundtrack is amazing, and I've even stopped in some places just to listen to all the audio of various bugs and birds. The achievements weren't too difficult to get, either, with following a guide at least. Love this game, absolutely will play again in the future.
Despite being a shorter game, I really enjoyed it. The art is beautiful and the story is compelling. The combat can feel a bit repetitive but not enough to be a turn off. I love the basis of southern folklore in a whimsical way. It made it feel unique.
I hold a special love for this game. I love the style of stop animation and art throughout this game. The character design is great and I love Hazel's personality. Hazel and other characters in this game talk and act like real people do, with complexities, and emotions pushing decisions. This game like many others touches on generational trauma, the journey of grief, and love. The landscape was designed very well. The story is gorgeous and rich. The combat is a little clanky at times but it didn't bother me much. The amount of collectibles in this game... Decent lore in some of those too. Worth playing,
Received as gift. I enjoyed my brief time with this game. It was a welcome respite from having beaten two old school JRPG's back to back and wanting something a bit different than the norm. I've had my eye on this game for a while and it looked unique enough that I would want to buy it eventually. What I liked -Setting, story, characters -Short, didn't overstay its welcome although would have been nice to learn a bit more about
Weaver's in general and the cosmology they play a role in supporting. I felt that it didn't go to in-depth overall on these topics but given the point of the narrative, it made sense.
-Music. I really loved some of the tunes in this game, especially boss themes. -Settings menu. There's a plethora of accessibility options and settings to customize controls, graphics, audio, etc that I feel a lot of games just don't put an effort into these days. The graphics section in particular is great cause none of the options require you to reload the game from what I can tell. While it would have been nice to have some sort in-game depiction of the difference in settings, pausing and changing is super snappy so its not really a big deal. Neutral: -Combat. It's not bad, but it is repetitive. Once you get your full kit within the first 3-4 chapters of the game, the encounters will feel very samey and that may turn off people who aren't invested in the story/setting. -Platforming. Again, these sections were not bad in and of themselves, but there were sometimes where the controls didn't feel as responsive. Traversal in this game is a means to experience the story more so than a gameplay mechanic so like the point above, if you aren't interested in the story/setting enough to overcome this, it will be a negative. What I didn't like: Some combat encounters can be a bit unfair with the enemy AI. The encounters are usually in an arena like setting where you may be fighting four-five enemies at a time at a given point. Some of them are super aggressive so you spend a lot of time waiting for your spell cds to reset so you have a way to CC them while you focus on enemies with projectiles for example or one that dives underground or my least favorite, the one that controls and can revive enemies unless you perma kill them by "untangling" them. It doesn't happen often but it is frustrating when it does since you can't really do anything else but melee/dodge until your cds reset. Overall, this is a recommend but I would say get this at a discount for sure. $40 bucks seems a bit much for a game like this. $30 would have been a better price.
this was the best story-based game I've ever played. While the ending seemed rushed, I loved the art style and mechanics of the game.
The story is amzing. The art is refreshing, both beautiful and eerie. The movement and combat are well done and have a great flow while having enough variety to keep from feeling like a button mash. Love the Southern folklore.
