South of Midnight

I waited until I finished to make this review and I am floored. The story itself is unique enough to have caught my attention from the first teaser. Seeing the care put into every character, location, and cryptid made me adore this game so much. The gameplay itself is fairly easy, even for a casual like me, but the story had me on the edge of my seat. You can see the amount of research that went into this game. And how tight they kept everything to keep it flowing. Highly recommend if you're looking for a single player experience.

The game is a pretty run-of-the-mill 3D action-adventure, platformer in terms of gameplay. The real standout aspect of this game, and its main appeal, is the Southern Gothic inspired art style. You don't usually see this kind of art style used for a game, which made this game especially interesting. I especially enjoyed the stop-motion parts of this game and serves to make this game an absolute joy to play and experience. It was also a joy to see a unique culture represented in this game, something that makes you wish that more games would incorporate aspects of lesser known, unique cultures in their art direction. The story is pretty good too. I enjoyed how they delved into serious topics throughout the course of the story. I also enjoyed the lore regarding the role of the Weaver and the Grand Tapestry, as well as the various abilities and items related to them. I also enjoyed Hazel as the protagonist, as I find her characterization believable and enjoyable to view.

really really good!! loved it and definitely recommend. hard to find a game this good with genuine rep for creole culture. it's a rlly good hack and slash as well. story is rlly interesting, art style is criminally underrated, and i love the atmosphere and monster designs. sound design is also really good! i enjoy the numbers w vocals v much. lived up to the hype imho, a shame that it didn't get much attention and ppl moved on really fast
