"Sound of Survival" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. In this case we have a bad idea implemented reasonably well... once more it's a case of "this perfectly good game format will surely be better if we hold it down and nail Dance Dance Revolution mechanics to it". This is always, always, always a terrible idea, one of the worst that game developers could ever come up with. If I wanted to play console-like DDR games, I'd play DDR. This is augmented by an upgrade system shamelessly ripped off from Vampire Survivors. None of this gels together well, and when you put that in the context of a somewhat incomplete/underdeveloped game (because it's a student project rather than a game made for gamers), it just doesn't work out. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. The "roguelike" tag tells us the developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.

For a student project (seen in one of the comments), this is a very solid and impressive game. I can definitely see how many players would enjoy it, especially considering the amount of effort and creativity that clearly went into its development. The design of the enemies and the terrain stood out to me in particular; both are well-executed and show a surprising level of polish for a school assignment. It's genuinely impressive how far a school projects can go. In terms of gameplay, while rhythm based shooters aren’t personally my favorite genre, I can still appreciate what the developers were going for. The concept of syncing your shots to the beat is creative and can definitely appeal to fans of games like Crypt of the NecroDancer or BPM: Bullets Per Minute. However, I found the experience of clicking the mouse in time with every beat a bit repetitive. That said, I can easily imagine this working really well as a mobile game something casual and engaging that you can play during your commute, like on the train. I only played a few rounds, but even early on, I found myself wondering whether the rhythm mechanic was truly essential. I think I would still have fun mindlessly blasting robots, leveling up, and upgrading skills, even without the beat-based structure. As for the music, there’s a decent selection diverse, energetic, and with high production quality. The vocal work, in particular, was impressive and enjoyable. However, I did feel a disconnect between the music choices and the game's intended setting. The game presents itself as a cyberpunk-themed survival shooter, but the soundtrack doesn’t really match that aesthetic. None of the tracks felt particularly "cyberpunk" a genre typically characterized by darker, synth heavy tones. This mismatch made it harder to feel immersed in the world of a robot invasion. Of course, this may have been a deliberate artistic choice, but I believe the experience could have been enhanced by drawing inspiration from other cyberpunk games and media for a more fitting audio atmosphere. Overall, this is a strong early version of a game with great potential.

Very nice game. It has potential, but unfortunately it's being wasted by the fact that the game isn't being worked on much. Modding support, for example, can be good so that you can write your own ideas and thus improve them further, and it can also make a game like this more popular. Contrary to what one developer said at the Gamefestival in Munich, the effort would not be that great, as the finished part is already available on Nexusmods as an example...you just have to install it. I also think it's a pity that you can't use your own songs, but this or other problems could be solved by the modding support mentioned above and without spending a lot of time. The controller support is mediocre, in the game everything works without any problems, but the control in the menus is not possible.

The female singer is amazing. I'd love more variety in the songs and also an option to deactivate Motion Blur as it's hard to see the enemies at times
Fun, wish there was more music variety is all.
