A super simple, charming little tactics game that is marred by careless design and lack of polish. UI could be more responsive, consistent and informative. Multiple character traits have upgrades that do exactly the same thing as the base version. There are at least two traits that do the same thing but are named differently, but thematically similarly, suggesting different design revisions made it into production. That said, fun to play in 60-90 minute bursts and the art is cute. It is too simple to play for much longer than that without getting bored unless you are specifically looking for that kind of experience. Most people will probably drop it altogether after 5 or 6 hours, Even hardcore completionists will likely be struggling by 30 hours... and they'll need another 20+ to get a full clear thanks to how upgrade costs skyrocket.
Soulkin is a game that thrives on simplicity and accessibility, making it an excellent entry point for players new to strategic games. The user-friendly interface allows you to focus on gameplay rather than struggling with mechanics, which is a refreshing change for the genre. Right from the start, the game feels approachable, yet it doesn’t shy away from delivering meaningful challenges that keep you engaged. The art style is clean and minimalistic, striking a balance between simplicity and appeal. Its cohesive visuals help set the tone for the game, creating a comfortable and inviting environment. However, as you progress, the repetitive nature of the visuals becomes noticeable, and it would have been nice to see more variety to match the evolving gameplay. What keeps Soulkin interesting is its emphasis on strategy. It continually nudges you to think of new approaches, rewarding creativity and adaptability. Even as the visuals plateau, the strategic layer keeps the experience fresh, encouraging experimentation and problem-solving. Overall, Soulkin is a solid choice for players who value straightforward yet engaging gameplay. It’s a title that prioritizes ease of play without sacrificing depth, though adding more visual and mechanical diversity could elevate it further. If you’re looking for a strategy game that doesn’t overwhelm but still offers a satisfying level of challenge, Soulkin is worth a try.
A fun little Roguelike with a nice variety of creature collector-inspired monsters. Definitely easier than most Roguelikes I've seen, but it serves well for those who want a milder take on the genre. Full review: https://youtu.be/lHy4LexeR9c
I greatly appreciated the characterization of every creature, each has a distinctive touch, both in artistic trait and individual abilities, making them truly unique, encouraging the player to discover new ones run after run. The principle behind the affinity system - based on the number of souls of defeated creatures acquired - is extremely interesting. Despite being in early access stage, the game already offers a lot of content and, at least in these first few hours, I haven't found any bug at all. The musical background is pleasant and appropriate for the genre and the setting. Overall, the turn-based combat on hexagonal cells and the roguelike mechanics work well. In my opinion where Soulkin can improve the most is the handling of the affinity mechanics. As said before the system is pleasant, but it is slightly undermined by some choices that, at least at first glance, can make it clunky and overly punishing (for example, it is not possible to retrieve the soul of the last creature defeated on the battlefield because the battle ends before you can claim it). Final conclusions: Soulkin is a title that definitely deserves a chance, offering a more than decent amount of content and that, by polishing a couple of aspects pointed out by the community, has all the requirements to be an excellent choice if you're looking for a mix of creature collector and roguelike with turn-based combat game (pleasant to see and to play as well).
