It's a low cost mashup of Beat Saber + Pistol Whip + Supernatural VR Fitness = SolarBlack --- Beat Saber is the big name in the action-rhythm genre that everyone knows. You smack colored orbs with glow sticks while listening to music. Solid game play, good selection of music tracks and industry standard hit detection. Pistol Whip takes the same concept and uses pistols instead of glow sticks. The ballet of bullets and beats tries to focus on letting you feel like an action hero. Supernatural VR Fitness takes the same concept and puts the focus on fitness, expanding what it offers to include meditation and even coaching. Where does Solarblack fall into all of this? You've got the sabers from Beat Saber, the guns from Pistol Whip and the rhythm, music and visual styling feel more inline with a fitness routine like Supernatural. Comparing all 4 games, Beat Saber has the better hit detection and a wider selection of songs than Solarblack. Pistol Whip has the better immersion and action-hero feel to your game experience. And Supernatural has a more structured fitness plan and available coaching if you need it. However, all three of those will cost you substantially more. Both Beat Saber and Pistol Whip come in at double the base price and go up from there with DLC add ons. And Supernatural is a monthly subscription model that will add up to over $100 a year. Either you're skipping those games to save some money or you're buying this to add variety to your game line up. Overall it's a fun game, but in some ways you get what you pay for and that's both a positive and a negative. Those are all slightly better games with more music variety, but you're also paying notably more. --- Bottomline: Either you're looking for a lower cost action-rythm VR game or just another alternative to your lineup in the same style. --- While you are here, would you consider following my curator page? Want to read all of my reviews and not just the curated ones?
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my early impressions & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/AQag-_Dk0ws This is a neutral recommendation! So I'm recommending waiting for updates as I did notice some issues on my end. The problem is that I don't know how prevalent these issues are. You may not experience them at all. Anyways, the biggest issue I experienced is the input lag / hit detection issue on swings. It seems like there was a delay in the hit detection, causing me to have to swing a split second earlier in order to get credit for the swings. I even had trouble on the tutorial because of this issue. You can check out my video to see for yourself. I also experienced some other minor issues. My settings were not being saved. By default, the color of my light sabers were yellow and orange, which are not visually distinct enough. I tried reducing render scale and AA just to see if it would effect the input lag at all. It just seemed like sometimes I would miss and other times not at all, as though the input lag varied maybe. I don't know. I think this game is going for a Supernatural VR type experience, minus the subscription fee. The environments look good. You do get a good workout from playing this game. If it weren't for the issues I encountered, I could see it being a very solid substitute to Supernatural, minus the premium soundtrack. I could definitely see people enjoying this as a go to workout routine for VR, especially if it had better tunes. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. I did have one final minor issue, the camera auto-centers at the start and end of songs, and sometimes it would auto-center in the wrong direction. There's no way to change it until you start or end a song again. It's annoying. Rate 5/10. I may be generous with my score, but this game does have potential to be one of the better workout routines for VR, if the issues are fixed. I recommend waiting for some updates if this game interests you.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Interesting game: Full of elements you need to avoid, slash, shoot or use... You'll need some physical preparation to get into the hardest levels. So it can be a good workout too, as well as for your stamina than for your reflexes and speed/reaction time training. Their peaceful electronic music will lead you into strange and wide worlds. Consider use the sabers in claw mode, in order to get a better and more intuitive aim at shooting. If you love the elements I've described here, then this game is made for you! Here an MVR video of me showing the legendary (hardest difficulty) gameplay: https://youtu.be/uw5CVys7FZs
"Beat-Whip" wins❕
If you can't afford Beat Saber and Pistol Whip, this game wins. It's not better than either, but it scratches the itch of both. The songs are decent, but unknown to me. And there are some thing regarding the pistol aim, and visual "shoot now" aspect, and the orb slash direction visuals that I'd like to see changed. And, I had to go to SETTINGS/GENERAL/RESET DATA in order to make the game actually let me play. But overall, I enjoyed the game That's why if you go to "LEGENDARY" leader board, the first ~4 songs have me in the list. 😉 IF ANYONE wants to play some VR, or have questions, join our VR group and enter the CHAT area. A rather clunky, frustrating, unexciting rhythm game. That's about as much I can be bothered to say. I enjoy rhythm games, I've played most of them. I really dislike this one.
SolarBlack is a paid VR shoot and slash notes to song. It worked on my Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has 16 songs and a tutorial map. Has 18 steam achievements. Maybe buy this game, if you like beat saber like games. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. While visually not as stunning, it is basically beat saber, pistol whip and osu combined and I'm all for it. If you like those three games and also like playing some VR titles that aren't as popular or polished then definitely give this one a try.
Interessantes Spiel, was mir persönlich dennoch nicht so zusagt.
Great game! If you enjoy rythm sport games and want an extra kick with shooter and bullet time elements: then this is the game for you! Has fantastic music too and great atmospheric environment.
