I LOVE THIS GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the time of writing this, I already have 100 hrs and I've only had it for maybe 1 1/2 months. The selling point is obviously that you can make your own stages and characters, and the best part is that the tools in the game are extremely easy to use. for only 15 bucks you get infinite replayablity with an infinite roster, The only limit is your imagingation - Obama (I think)
The tech is way more interesting than the game
I MADE A GOOBER
This game is hard to recommend to friends, due to some strange design decisions, a few editor limitations that require weird workarounds, the only option for 3d modeling being exceedingly frustrating, a very unintuitive stage editor, small but frequent bugs, CPUs that ignore certain moves in their arsenal entirely, and a handful of other moderately annoying elements. However, the core premise and ease of use has singlehandedly landed Smack Studio as one of my favorite games of all time. I had been wishing for a game like this for years. I love making a variety of characters with unique movesets, and balancing them to be fair against eachother. Regardless of whether this game gets future updates or not, I'm incredibly glad it exists, and I've had so, so much fun with it.
It lets me be very creative with my characters. Granted, it takes a bit to make a character, but it's still fun when I'm making it.
The game is very unpolished in a lot of places and likely won't see a 1.0 release for a long while, yes, but the main reason this has a niche but modest chunk of people playing it is because of it's robust character creator, stage designer, and the Steam Workshop. Stuff like that in videogames ALWAYS adds a ton of replay value to any game. This is essentially just Smash Bros. and pieces of Game Garage Builder meshed into one product.
Smack Studio is a novel concept and succeeds at what it sets out to do, but personally, I find it somewhat redundant. If you’re skilled enough to create art to feed into it for a full-fledged character, you could probably just make a sprite sheet yourself. The concept is cool, but for a game targeting artists, it leans more toward “lazy convenience” than groundbreaking innovation. The UI can be a bit messy, though the gameplay and music are solid. I understand that the main gimmick is creating your own characters, but I think it might have worked better as a regular game with editable base characters. The AI can be finicky, and learning an entirely new program feels like overkill—especially when artists could create sprite sheets and use FrayTools to upload them to Fraymakers. The developers are clearly talented, but for me, it doesn’t inspire finishing art pieces here. It feels like a lot of effort for something I could achieve more directly through other means.
worth the buy will be getting atleast 200 hrs out of this and making my own charachters
It's peak you can download characters and the community be COOKING.
would love this as an engine
