Slimper is a wonderful homage to Jump King, borrowing the core gameplay loop of Nexile's controversial precision platformer while also earning its own identity through the inclusion of new mechanics. In particular, these are: - A jump strength indicator animation, which allows for high consistency in traversal strategies. - A powerful wall jump ability that offers more diversity in traversal while also providing a means to reduce the impact of certain player mistakes. Though slightly less polished, I believe this game has comparable quality of design to the other mainstream "Foddian" games I've tried, providing the same emotional rollercoaster resulting from cyclical success and defeat, the same bursts of relief & pride with each consistent room route learned, and the same sense of satisfaction upon eventual victory. Regarding the artistic choices, I found the environmental design to be beautiful, possessing a surprising level of detail and with each different zone providing a distinct atmosphere, further improved by appropriately mellow music which shifts depending on the current area. Additionally, there are a few apparent stylistic nods to Celeste which did not go unappreciated. Despite the praises, my main caveat for new players is that Slimper has a lack of punishment diversity in that the vast majority of individual missed jumps will bring you back to the same few rooms, which sometimes means falling down the majority of the map with one slip-up, whereas Jump King mostly confined this effect to its individual zones. However, due to Slimper's jump strength indicator animations, you are simply less likely to mess up any given jump once you know how to approach it, so in that regard, the difficulty balances out upon comparison. I'm somewhat disappointed at this game's apparent fate of obscurity despite the level of effort that has gone into it and the fun it has provided me. I highly recommend any platformer fan gives it a chance considering its low price point, as I think the developer could use a little more support given the care put into this project. It is a worthy contribution to the genre.
