Even though it’s just a pixel game, the character art and unique story are super appealing. As a casual game, it’s such a great experience!
Slayer Mage: My First RPG is a retro-styled fantasy adventure that fully embraces the design philosophy of classic turn-based role-playing games from the early RPG Maker era. Developed and published by Bocchira, the game follows a young elf mage named Imi as she becomes entangled in a dangerous journey involving dark forces, strange allies, and a world filled with traditional fantasy creatures and nostalgic charm. Instead of modern cinematic storytelling or highly advanced mechanics, the experience focuses on exploration, party progression, dungeon crawling, and old-school turn-based combat in a way that feels intentionally reminiscent of classic JRPGs from decades past. From the opening moments, the game makes its inspirations very clear. Players travel across pixel-art towns, forests, dungeons, and castles while slowly building a party strong enough to survive increasingly dangerous encounters. The structure feels immediately familiar to anyone who grew up playing retro fantasy RPGs. Exploration is simple but satisfying, towns are filled with NPC dialogue and shops, and progression revolves around gaining experience, finding equipment, and unlocking stronger abilities through steady advancement rather than fast-paced action systems. One of the game’s biggest strengths is its nostalgic atmosphere. Slayer Mage: My First RPG understands exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver and remains committed to that identity throughout the entire adventure. The pixel-art environments, old-school menus, and turn-based battle system create a comforting sense of familiarity that feels like stepping back into an earlier era of role-playing games. Rather than trying to modernize every mechanic, the game proudly embraces the slower pacing and straightforward design choices associated with classic JRPG adventures. The combat system is simple but effective. Battles unfold through traditional turn-based encounters where players select attacks, spells, healing abilities, and items while managing party resources carefully during dungeon exploration. The mechanics are not especially complex, but the combat maintains a satisfying rhythm that supports the game’s retro style well. Character progression feels rewarding because every level gained and every new spell learned noticeably improves the party’s ability to survive tougher encounters. Another enjoyable aspect is the growing party of recruitable allies players encounter throughout the story. As Imi travels across the world, new companions join the adventure and contribute both combat abilities and personality to the experience. These interactions help the world feel more alive while also breaking up the repetition of exploration and combat. The dialogue occasionally leans into lighthearted humor and self-aware fantasy comedy, giving the adventure a playful tone beneath the more traditional fantasy storyline. Dungeon exploration is another area where the game performs reasonably well. Hidden treasure chests, branching pathways, enemy encounters, and environmental obstacles encourage players to explore areas carefully rather than rushing directly toward objectives. The world design captures the feeling of older fantasy RPGs where gradual exploration and steady progression were central parts of the experience. The pacing allows players to absorb the atmosphere while slowly uncovering stronger equipment and deeper parts of the world. Visually, the game uses a deliberately retro pixel-art presentation that strongly resembles classic RPG Maker projects. Character sprites, environmental designs, and animations are intentionally simple, reinforcing the nostalgic identity of the game from beginning to end. While the graphics are clearly limited by the indie production scale, the consistent art direction helps the fantasy world feel cohesive. Players looking for cutting-edge visuals will obviously not find them here, but fans of classic pixel-art RPGs may appreciate the straightforward presentation. The soundtrack also supports the retro atmosphere effectively. Town themes feel calm and nostalgic, battle music adds energy during combat encounters, and exploration tracks help maintain the adventurous tone of the journey. The music may not be especially groundbreaking, but it consistently complements the fantasy setting and enhances the feeling of playing an older role-playing game inspired by classic console adventures. One of the more appealing qualities of Slayer Mage: My First RPG is the clear passion behind the project. The game feels like it was created by developers who genuinely love classic RPGs and wanted to recreate that style without heavily modernizing it. That sincerity gives the experience a certain charm that helps compensate for some of its rougher technical edges. However, the game also inherits many of the frustrations associated with older RPG design philosophies. Navigation can occasionally feel clunky, dungeon pacing sometimes drags during longer exploration sections, and several systems lack the refinement players might expect from modern role-playing games. The game intentionally imitates retro design choices, but this also means it occasionally reproduces outdated inconveniences that modern RPGs have largely abandoned. Combat depth is another limitation. While the turn-based battles remain enjoyable for a while, the mechanics evolve fairly slowly and may begin to feel repetitive during extended sessions. Players looking for highly tactical encounters or modern strategic complexity may find the gameplay somewhat simplistic after many hours. The indie production scale is also noticeable throughout the experience. Certain animations are stiff, environmental variety can feel limited, and some dialogue or translation work appears rough around the edges. Technical imperfections occasionally break immersion, though none of these issues are severe enough to completely damage the overall experience. Despite these flaws, Slayer Mage: My First RPG succeeds because it fully understands its audience. The game does not try to compete with massive modern RPG franchises or reinvent the genre with experimental mechanics. Instead, it focuses entirely on recreating the charm of classic fantasy adventures filled with exploration, gradual progression, simple storytelling, and nostalgic turn-based combat. Slayer Mage: My First RPG may not appeal to players searching for polished modern RPG systems or cinematic presentation, but it remains a charming and heartfelt adventure for fans of retro role-playing games. Its dated mechanics and technical roughness prevent it from becoming truly exceptional, yet the nostalgic atmosphere, classic progression systems, and obvious passion behind the project still make it an enjoyable journey for players who appreciate old-school fantasy RPG experiences. As a JRPG fan, I really enjoyed this game. I think it was the creator’s first game, and for a debut, it turned out quite well. I also really liked the various references.
Pretty fun and good x)
