5.0★ One of a kind experience that I unfortunately did not find anywhere else, the OST, the vibe, the story, everything is absolutely perfect
Incredible game !
Perhaps one of the most singular & haunting gaming experiences of my life. It's like stumbling upon Twin Peaks or Ursula Le Guin for the first time; there is really nothing like it, and it will reshape the way you engage with the medium from then on. As someone who has loved survival horrors my entire life, and also loved franchises like Blame!, Dead Space, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, & Ergo Proxy this felt like it was tailor made for me every second of the game. The visuals are haunting & creepy; the shifts from anime-style cutscene stills, to pixelated 3D Models, to weird PS1 style First Person sections. Every moment keeps you on edge as you explore this incredibly bizarre, corrupting sci-fi horror about queer lovers on an interstellar mining moon. The score is haunting, the intermixing of real orchestral & theatrical pieces with the piano motifs (amazingly) put together for the game is a real treat. The interspersing of real quotations from poetry, novels and short fiction with the incredibly in-keeping narrative of Yuri Stern is truly remarkable. Everything feels like it has its place; the real life paintings function within the narrative & setting, the real life poetry fits seamlessly alongside Yuri's. Barbara's art & models worked remarkably in every frame, scene, setting and memory. The story is enthralling; no spoilers here but this is one of my favourite examples of the Silent Hill style narratives of memory, haunting and fear. It is really a masterpiece in both its originality & its clear love for its influences from across the world. It wasn't *hard*, I played on Normal difficulty and had no real issues; the bosses felt like a challenge but they were never oppressive, and all were <2 attempts personally. The hardest aspect is managing your inventory, the map, your memory of where the heck to go... There is 2-3 rooms that are THE ROOMS FROM HELL (seriously, Nowhere...) but even those feel incredibly satisfying when you crack it. This is great. 12/10. Will play again very soon. I need all the endings!
This game has changed my life, forever. Thanks, rose-engine.
