Shuffles 'n Scuffles is a deckbuilder roguelike with a cute cardboard aesthetic. Art: The visuals are FANTASTIC - super cute cardboard aesthetic, everything is bouncy and happy. The cardboard boxy boss is a delight! Even the merchants are great and convey style. Interface: Interface is very important for deckbuilder, and this game nails it! Selecting cards is smooth & responsive, animations everywhere. This is a treat! Gameplay: It's fun blasting oncoming enemies, but I wish the grid was used more. There's a few cards that move enemies, but it's not enough of an emphasis. I found myself wanting more Into the Breach - shoving enemies into each other, into pits, blasting them with bombs, etc. Spending mana one at a time to play cards is OK. Doesn't add much, but neither does it take anything away. A big emphasis is on creating your cards. Most combinations I tried actually worked, even though the wording was often strange. However the mana cost does increase the more powerful it is, making it difficult to make 'broken' cards (which I understand, but also... breaking stuff is fun). I did find myself always gravitating to making the deck as small as possible, keeping only mana giving cards and the one that blows up all enemies. Felt like nothing could beat that. Despite all my critiques, it is overall fun blasting enemies with colourful cards. Music: Is great! Capture the vibes well. Overall: Fantastic art & interface, good enough gameplay. I'm glad the deckbuilding genre still has games willing to take risks with new mechanics!
So far there is one bad review for this game and I really can't disagree with anything said in that review. BUT, I will address the 3, but actually 5 points that bad review makes. 1. This is not the worst deckbuilder roguelike, but I agree it looks cool. 2. There is not a lot of enemy variety. The boss at the end of each of the 3 acts is the same and is reskinned, but just higher HP and a tad more difficult. 3. The game can be broken in the sense that it allows you to break it. Not everytime, but yes you can go infinite if you choose if offered the chance. Not much can stop you except the ghosts and the shields everything has in the 3rd act. 4. There are no relics (this isn't StS), there are no jokers (this isn't Balatro), there is actual randomness between battles to force you to make a decision to gain a card, delete a card or many by chance or some safer options like burying a card or getting a completely crap card you will have to change at some point. You can't just skip something it makes you choose an option which actually is very strategic towards your end goal. 5. I kind of agree after you play the game for 2 hours you have seen the game. There are many things this game could be better at, but it IS a finished game. All of that aside the beautiful part of this game is being able to literally craft your own cards. It took me an hour just to figure out the basic terminology of the cards and mechanics. The game doesn't explain this to you at all from what I've seen, but that's also what was great about it. I had to learn what to do on my own. This game does nothing different than any other game of it's type except for the combination of cards you can create and it's truly remarkable and a sandbox in that regard. After 8 hours I finally won a run not going infinite, but with a refined deck of like 8 cards that truly felt like a well oiled machine. I can see where you can break the game in so many ways, but damn does it offer something fresh unlike anything else I've played. I would recommend this game to anyone. I sunk 100 hours into StS which really isn't much. Balatro 800 hours, and played a little StS2 and this game draws my attention because of the card creating mechanic and the rest of the game is also great. Kudos to the art, the music, it's optimized I can't believe it hasn't received a little more attention, but I will be trying out more of the characters I just unlocked. Just want to say to the developers you have a gem here. I don't see an update for this game, but use this as a stepping stone for your next game. *edit* I can't believe I forgot to also mention the other great part of the game. Mana. With what mana you have available per turn you have the option to spend all of it or apply it to a card/cards for the next turn or several turns afterwards. Also it's great to bury an expensive card and dig it up later to add back to your deck to cost less. I'm about 99% sure I've buried a card and ended a run to start a new run and dig it up like in that A Note For Yourself event in StS. Combine the mana manipulation and card creation together and that's why this game is just a joy to play.
a stellar debut from a new team. Shuffles 'n Scuffles manages to bring something new to the roguelike deckbullders genre. very clever little game. the grid mechanic is fresh and interesting. the music is a bop, and the art direction is adorable. great stuff all around!
This game might just be the worst Deckbuilder roguelike I have ever played. Which is sad! Because it looks so cool. Firstly, there is almost 0 enemy variety. There are like 10 total enemies in the game, and one boss. ONE! That they just reskin three times! Second, this is easily the most broken roguelike I have ever played. I went infinite in the first 2 hours of playing it. You can get your deck to 5 cards after the FIRST SHOP, then construct broken cards that let you go infinite, with seemingly nothing in the way of stopping you. Third, there's nothing in the game outside of cards. There are no relics, no jokers, nothing that creates any sort of real randomness. After you've played this game for 2 hours, you've played the entire game. It's essentially a pre-alpha. A pretty one, with a cool concept, but this is not a finished game :(
Casual, cute, cozy, fun. I've successfully completed 3 runs with 3 different decks so far and I'm having a great time (Steam doesn't count my demo playtime). I find with the custom card building feature, I keep discovering new ways to combo cards and tweak them to min/max their effects. Seeing what kind of unique synergies are possible is half of the fun. Really cool concept, try it out!
A card game better than most tcgs I've played
This is going to be a an irresistible play I am going to sink so much time in I love the mechanics especially with the customizing cards slowly but surely the deck becomes more and more of what you want and need plus the two different card shops is fun. Simple at first but hides complexities you can sink your teeth in.
A fresh take on deck builders with whimsical artwork and features I have never seen in other games. The ability to modify your cards is a game changer. Each character unlock brings a brand new way to play and there are so many options! Would definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys deck builders and what a stellar first launch from the studio
I have played hours in the demo and that was great, now I am excited the game is out and I get to play the new maps and listen to the different music. The game is really fun and the dev team is amazing, I strongly recommend this game and if your into customizing your own gameplay then you will love it. Being able to create my own cards and build a personalized deck is so much fun and keeps me hooked. Thanks Shuffles 'n Scuffles!
charming roguelike with a flexible card creation/modification system. the grid board and mana systems allow for planning ahead and building combos.
A wonderfully fun game with a great artstyle and some really in depth gameplay! I know for a fact that I am going to sink a large amount of my time into this game.
