Free version of a pretty awesome gem. This game is pretty much in the same vein as Dark Souls and Bloodborne on a beat em up type plane. Mechanics you know about said games are here from stamina watching to rolling to parrying. One of the awesome things about this title is the complete freedom of movement. With this free version you get the full base game for story without additional features such as new game +, other characters, and various modes.
Pros
+Solid and stable preview like build of a five dollar product for free +Cool pixel like art +Great atmosphere +Fluid controls and movement
Cons
-Confusing navigation -Gamepad controls not rebindable All in all this is a really solid version of a game that looks pretty neat. The full version got a price drop as well so you can pick it up for five dollars. Honestly a pretty noble and interesting step from the devs putting a free version of a game that already has a priced build. It's got me interested in picking up the full title. Awesome game. Captures both the spirit Bloodborne and lovecraftian mythos. Surprisingly has a deep lore without a " lol I'm evil cause I'm evil " villains. There is a mystery in a Victorian mansion and everything can be explained once you understand what happened. It has metroidvania sequel: Usurper. Also the tutor NPC is basically Alucard. (with elements of both Hellsing and Symphony of the Night version) The art is gorgeous, bloody but gorgeous.

I had already played this game to completion 1-2 years ago on another account..i've now tried it and it seems like the full version as i remembered it...therefore i will write my (short) opinion taking for granted that the game is the exact same without NG+, added characters etc as advertised. The game was...amazing. Period. Don't misunderstand me: if this was a game released by Fromsoftware/Bandai Namco or whatever for 60 dollars i would probably feel cheated...but ONLY because of a lack of polish and the fact that it is obvious that the game didn't demand a high enough budget to demand such a price. But for an indie game, and the price that it demanded at it's time, it was simply awesome. Gameplay wise easily one of the best translations of the soulsborne+metroidvania inspired formula that i've seen..only Salt & Sanctuary, Hollow knight and Momodora: Reverie under the moonlight can hold a candle to it. while these 3 games i just mentioned are, overall, more refined and polished, Shrouded in Sanity has one thing that only Salt & Sanctuary managed to achieve succesfully: a sense of "presence" and world building...i remember being very intrigued by the lore, and i explored the mansion fully just to see every corner and read every bit of information..and for someone that loves lore-heavy games, Lovecraftian themes, the victorian era & gothic horror...this was really made for me. While there are many problems (mostly on the controls feeling "without enough momentum" and impact) i can easily close an eye. The only thing i remember kinda breaking the game was the fact that parrying with your blade/gun really cheesed the enemies too much...you could just chain-parry some of them to death once you got the timing down (which, due to the low amount of animated frames during enemies' attacks, is very easily...just memorize on which frame you have to do the input and that's it) I will just say that i've enjoyed this game MUCH more then Lords of the fallen & The surge despite the obvious difference in budgets. Can't wait for more from what is, at this point, a declared sub genre (EITR, Death gambit, Dark devotion,Blasphemous & some more are coming...and they all look stupidly good)
ok!!
I downloaded this game for free because sometimes I'm bored and I decide to check my Steam queue and to play some free games. Boy, am I glad I did it today, because what I found was a really fun soulslike and I wasn't even expecting one (when I play free games I just cycle through the screenshots real quick and it's usually enough: if the game doesn't look like something I despise I will gladly try it out blindly). It's fun, challenging and I love the lovecraftian feel. It's extremely derivative, so much so that earlier I described it to my friends as "Pixel Bloodborne", but in a good way. If you like Souls games, it's worth a try. What struck me the most, I usually can't stand pixelesque (hopefully that's a word) games, but I really liked the looks of Shrouded in Sanity. Since the Summer sales are upon us, I'm definitely getting the whole game despite not having finished the free one yet. It's definitely worth it and I feel like I owe something to the devs. The free version is way better than a demo, because you get to play the WHOLE game minus a few extras, like more characters and new game plus and I really like this marketing decision. I highly recommend this game.
Graphics are pretty good. Animations are clunky, but not a problem. Sound is a bit abrupt; it would be nicer if it faded in and out more smoothly. I liked the setting and ambiance; the story seemed promising. Controls, though, are cumbersome. I don't like the control scheme. There are far too many unique buttons for things that would work better ganged or simply timed. A button for rolling? Sure. Buttons for shooting, slashing, and slashing hard? Maybe. A separate button to run? Maybe if you don't have an analog stick. (Seems unlikely that roll and run needed to be distinct anywhere, either.) And so on... the developer fell for an old trap: assigning a bunch of distinct buttons to things because that seemed a good way to provide all the options. Has great potential but still needs polish.
