Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary World Tour
Part of the most well known trio of FPS games on Build, beside Duke Nukem and Blood. And, honestly, one of the most fun! I dunno if I'd personally rank it above Blood but there's a lot to like here. Firstly I just think this version of Lo Wang is a lot more tolerable than nuWang. Sure, it's definitely an, uh, product of its time (and kind of a lech), but there's lots of funny lines and some pretty badass ones (splattering a group of ninjas with a grenade and hearing a drawn out 'I KILL YOU!' is a good example). He talks a lot, but not *as* much as the other guy. Secondly, the combat's very fluid and quite fast paced, bar some jank with the Railgun. The katana's useful for saving ammo and is surprisingly effective against Rippers and Shadow Ninjas, the shurikens are accurate, the Riot Gun's just a choice shotgun I'd rank alongisde Blood's sawed-off, the Uzis are fun to spam, and the Rocket and Grenade launchers are distinct *and* fun as hell to use. As for the maps? They're.. mostly ok? The aesthetics are cool but they can get pretty mazey and honestly I think they're the weakest aspect of the game. I had to look up some let's plays to figure out the more obtuse levels of the game. Basically, while they're okay, there's not really a Phantom Express, or, like, a Red Light District. The Zilla fight is memorable, but little else is. Definite recommend. Now if only there was a remaster for Duke Nukem on Steam that was actually bundled with all the expansions. You know.. like they've done with this and Blood? But I digress.
I was gifted Shadow Warrior because it's a Build Engine game that's good but overlooked compared to the likes of Duke Nukem 3d or Blood—the former of which I have played, the latter I haven't. This is a really nice package, even if it is packaged somewhat oddly into three executables for the three campaigns. I'll give my tuppence worth on each campaign below. As a whole, it's a really nicely done game. The modernisation works really well so that the graphics look excellent at 4k resolutions and run really well. I didn't have any complaints or run into any issues with how it ran, save for a couple of crashes at a couple of moments. Not sure what caused them, but they weren't show-stopping at least. Generally, it felt like I was playing a 1997 game on a very good Source Port, which is exactly what I'd want. There's a decent range of weapons, but I found myself pretty much exclusively leaning on the Uzis and Riot Gun (shotgun) because they're effective and ammo was plentiful. Missiles came out for bosses and maybe the grenade launcher at times. I wonder if on harder difficulties that the arsenal is more interesting because of increased scarcity? This didn't dampen my enjoyment, but was something I noticed. A second play-through I would whack the difficulty up to No Pain No Gain. I appreciated that this wasn't simply a Duke 3D clone, but that new mechanics were introduced, like controllable turrets and driveable vehicles. The Soundtrack is also excellent - Lee Jackson does some truly excellent MIDI work here, with some tubthumping bangers to more spooky numbers. And the Classic Redux version sounds great! Getting all achievements is a cakewalk too. Don't see why anyone would struggle. This is a full-throated recommend.
Shadow Warrior
The shareware episode was, I thought, quite uneven. I understand that there was a desire to hook players in, showing them as much of what the game was about as possible to get them to hand over fistfuls of cash so they'd buy the full campaign. But I found, at times, that they lobbed too much into the opening four maps such that they became a but of a slog at times. They were fun, sure, but I was concerned I was going to tire of the game long before I finished the game. This was unfounded - the remaining levels seemed to be much more focused. The level design syntax was consistent throughout, so going secret-hunting was rewarding without being over-taxing. The variety of environments was also great, and everything looked like it should; there's no "well, I guess I can believe that's a boat..." going on.
Twin Dragon
This is undoubtedly the weakest part of the package. Some of the levels (like Wang's Home or Emergency Room) were really good fun. Others (especially City of Despair) were a bit of a slog, and progress unnecessarily hidden from the player (I avidly dislike keys being hidden in untagged secrets). It's more of the same from the main campaign, but with worse level design. It's less consistent, but still decent enough overall
Wanton Destruction
We get some reskinned enemies, but it's a continuation of the gameplay we've come to enjoy. These levels were really enjoyable, and chock-full of secrets (some of them really well hidden, I suspect. I only suspect because I didn't find a good number of them!). Sunstorm did a great job with these maps; after Twin Dragon, this was what I needed to finish on a high note. I thought the level design and progression was top notch, with yet more environmental variety, from a plane to train station to automobile factory to a skyscraper. Any time I got stuck on progression, it was 100% my fault, not level design. It's hard *not* to have fun with this!
