Serious Scramblers

[h1]Falling with purpose. [/h1] Serious Scramblers is a platforming arcade title developed by Chinykian Games. The aim of the game here is to reach the bottom of each level by jumping from platform to platform while avoiding obstacles and stomping on enemies. It was originally released on iOS, but the dev decided to bring it to Steam too. [*]It has that ‘one more try’ feeling that makes a good arcade game good. There were many times where I’d tell myself this was my last try for a while, but I’d just keep going to beat a level I was struggling with. [*]The gameplay is very simple, but it’s enjoyable. You really do just fall from platform to platform while avoiding/stomping on things. There’s no jump, dash or anything like that. It’s a short, cheap game and since it remains enjoyable throughout, I don’t think there’s any problem with keeping it simple. [*]While there are a fixed number of levels, they’re actually procedurally generated. I found the proc gen to be pretty good, with only a handful of times where I found the generation frustrating. I was quite surprised that the levels still felt distinct to one another even though they’re proc gen due solely to the ratio of types of obstacles used. [*]There’s a good difficultly curve, and the game certainly offers a challenge. [*]As you go through the levels, you can collect coins which are spent on unlocking new characters. There are thirteen different characters, each with a different design and different characteristics. One character is slower but gets more coins, while another spawns more spikes but gets more speed boosts. I haven’t unlocked all of the characters yet, but of those that I have unlocked I haven’t felt like any of them significantly change the gameplay, but the slight variations are welcome. [*]As well as 27 regular levels, there’s also an endless mode with an online leaderboard. [*]The chiptune music is great, fitting nicely with the game. There are only a couple of tracks, but surprisingly it doesn’t get repetitive. [/list] [h1]Negatives: [/h1] [list][*]This isn’t a huge issue, but the border art doesn’t really work. It seems like they used the store page banner, but when it’s cut up by the game screen in the middle, it doesn’t really look like anything. Considering it takes up so much of the screen, it’d be nice if it looked a bit better. [*]The options here are fairly limited. You can change music and sound effects levels, but there aren’t any graphics or controls options available. [/list] [h1]Verdict: [/h1] All in all, Serious Scramblers is an enjoyable, bite-sized arcade title that nails that one more try feeling. The only issues I had with it were very minor, so this is an easy recommendation to fans of the arcade genre. Had a blast playing this game! Love the retro feel of the art style, and the music is pretty catchy as well. Stomping on enemies feels so satisfying. Would love to see more stages and boss fights (dlc/expansion perhaps?). TLDR; fun little game, pretty worth the price.

One of the most polished little games I've played in a long time. Simple, but a lot of fun!

Highly addictive

A lack of ambition isn’t the kiss of death for a game, but it isn’t going to help it, either. I look for games that have something to say, or new ideas to share, or just a really compelling gameplay loop. I don’t normally end up with games like Serious Scramblers, little more than a score attack platform dash, not because I dislike them but because I’m not looking for the very specific sort of mastery challenge they offer. If you do, this will be a fine little diversion for you, otherwise there’s not a whole lot to attract folks here. With no story to clutter the proceedings, you are simply a ninja descending a series of platforms into a nigh-bottomless cave. Some of these platforms have coins on them, others have enemies, and many more still have traps like retractable spikes and fire bars. Descend far enough to the flag and you earn the privilege of moving to the next stage, but the spiked ceiling is following you down so there’s no time to dawdle. Coins can be used to unlock new characters or start right back from where you died instead of resetting the level, but other than that it’s a straight shot down the hundred or so levels to the end. There’s little else to talk about, really. The screen wraps around the outer edges, so you can use that to dodge danger or reach tricky platforms. Supposedly there’s a boss at the end of all this, but without much to the levels, I didn’t see much reason to get to it. With no jump button or attacks, all there is to learn is the timing for traps and the accuracy to goomba-stomp enemies on the way down. Different characters can behave quite differently, like falling slower or having permanent speed boosts or being lifted wholesale from SUPERHOT. Still, you’re liable to find one that works for you and stick with it, particularly the ones that make more coins appear regularly. Again, Serious Scramblers isn’t a bad game. It sets out to do one simple thing, and it does it admirably. I just can’t say I’m very interested in the thing it’s doing. If you’re here for a very focused, specific challenge that you’re somehow not getting from Downwell, then you’re bound to get more mileage out of this than I. The faux-CRT pixel graphics are decently colorful and the sound design gets the job done, just not in a memorable way. And doesn’t that seem to sum up the situation here? Serious Scramblers gets the job done for simple platforming that ratchets up the challenge, but there’s nothing about it that’s going to stick with you. Did you enjoy this review? Not a badly made game, but after playing for a short time it was obviously designed and made for phones first and foremost with PC being an afterthought. There is no reason to buy a game this simplistic on a PC, im sure you could find 100s of equal quality games for free on numerous browser game websites. If you want an alternative that is the same concept but better in every measurable way check out "Downwell".

If you like arcade games but hate playing them on the phone, this is a fantastic game to pick up. The game mechanics just require you to move left and right, not much brain work needed here. All is well for the first few levels until you hit the later levels. Now this is where ♥♥♥♥ happens. you gotta pay attention to the next platform popping up from the bottom, the spike platform you land on and the swinging fire rod above your head to ensure you get through to the end. all in all, a 10/10

Serious Scramblers is a unique game that your main objective is to descend down the deeps of a hazardous pit. The unique gameplay style makes it the best at its genre, and with different characters and a furious leaderboard, this game will make you addictive and go nuts. xD 2 year's hard work goes into this jam packed game.

Warning, Serious Scramblers is hard to put down. This two-button budget game is so simple, but the gameplay is addictive. Especially once the game unlocks endless. Then all I wanted to do was get the top spot on the online leaderboards! Serious Scramblers definitely takes notes from Downwell but simplifies it, creating something new. Since you have no control over going up or slowing your descent the game is more about timing. Picking the perfect go time on the path you’ve chosen. The game gets more difficult as the levels get deeper. With more enemies, faster versions of them, and smaller platforms. There's bosses and other characters to play! Summary: Serious Scramblers is a great and addictive little game that offers just the right amount of challenge all the while having the perfect amount of content to keep it engaging. It is fun, it is addictive and extremely well designed and honestly, there is little I can fault with the game. If there was to be one improvement I think could be made it would be with the menus. Right now you can only select a menu option with the Enter key, which is fine for those using the arrow keys, but not so much for those using WASD. Being able to select the menu options using the spacebar or the E key for WASD users would be great. While it is a relatively short game, the unlocking of all the characters and the endless mode are both bound to keep you playing for more than just a few extra hours and overall for its price, you honestly cannot ask for more. It is well worth it! Atmosphere: The atmosphere is very much one of being back in the 80s and 90s playing a game in the arcades. You have all the retro platformer sound effects along with a very addictive chip-tune soundtrack that will quickly find yourself subconsciously humming as you play. When you combine the music, the sound effects and the screen design of Serious Scramblers, it truly brings you back to the days of being a kid in an arcade. And while many games often attempt this, few ever succeed to the degree that Serious Scramblers does. Conclusion: Serious Scramblers is one of those games where just viewing the store page isn’t quite enough. You just have to get stuck into and give it a go-to really appreciate it and the goal that the developer had when making it. Give it a chance and you will find yourself becoming utterly absorbed into it before you even realise it. Serious Scramblers is a fantastic game, that despite having started its life on mobile has transitioned over to PC extremely well. It is addictive, it is fun and has more than enough content to keep you busy making its asking price worth every cent. And with that, I give Serious Scramblers a 9 out of 10.
