Devolver Digital…
░░░░░░░░░░░░▄▐ ░░░░░░▄▄▄░░▄██▄ ░░░░░▐▀█▀▌░░░░▀█▄ ░░░░░▐█▄█▌░░░░░░▀█▄ ░░░░░░▀▄▀░░░▄▄▄▄▄▀▀ ░░░░▄▄▄██▀▀▀▀ ░░░█▀▄▄▄█░▀▀ ░░░▌░▄▄▄▐▌▀▀▀ ▄░▐░░░▄▄░█░▀▀ ▀█▌░░░▄░▀█▀░▀ ░░░░░░░▄▄▐▌▄▄ ░░░░░░░▀███▀█░▄ ░░░░░░▐▌▀▄▀▄▀▐▄ ░░░░░░▐▀░░░░░░▐▌ ░░░░░░█░░░░░░░░█ ░░░░░▐▌░░░░░░░░░█ ░░░░░█░░░░░░░░░░▐▌
Starts out nicely then devolves into a unfair rng poop fest.
Review zu Serious Sam: The Random Encounter
Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, developed by Vlambeer in collaboration with Croteam and published by Devolver Digital, is one of the strangest and most experimental entries in the long-running Serious Sam franchise. Known for its chaotic first-person shooters, the series takes an unexpected turn here, transforming into a retro-inspired, turn-based role-playing game infused with bullet-hell intensity. This installment was part of the “Serious Sam Indie Series,” a short-lived experiment that handed the license to various indie developers to reinterpret Sam’s world in creative ways. The result is an intriguing, if uneven, fusion of classic RPG design and frantic arcade energy—a game that manages to capture the absurd spirit of Serious Sam while simultaneously venturing far from its roots. At its core, The Random Encounter is built around a simple but surprisingly effective concept. You control Sam “Serious” Stone and a small party of companions as they embark on a mission through space and time to hunt down the eternal nemesis, Mental. Rather than blasting through endless hordes in first-person perspective, you navigate a pixelated overworld, triggering random battles much like a traditional JRPG. Once combat begins, however, the familiar Serious Sam chaos emerges in a new form. Instead of static turns, each encounter plays out in real-time bursts lasting five seconds. You choose actions for each character—whether to fire, use an item, change weapons, or reposition—then watch as bullets, rockets, and projectiles fill the screen in a brief, explosive ballet. It’s a system that combines tactical planning with reflex-driven chaos, and at its best, it feels like a natural extension of the franchise’s relentless action sensibilities. Vlambeer’s influence is immediately evident in the game’s presentation and pacing. The pixel art style is bold, colorful, and intentionally chaotic, filled with exaggerated sprites and fluid animations that echo the old-school energy of arcade shooters. The combat is visually busy—explosions, enemy swarms, and particle effects collide in frantic sequences that mirror the overwhelming onslaught of the mainline Serious Sam games. The soundtrack complements the visual mayhem with high-energy chiptune tracks and distorted guitar riffs that heighten the intensity of battle. There’s also a dose of the franchise’s trademark humor woven throughout the dialogue and flavor text. Sam’s sarcastic quips and the absurdity of facing hundreds of enemies in a “turn-based” RPG setting reinforce that the game never takes itself too seriously, even as it challenges the player to survive overwhelming odds. Mechanically, The Random Encounter is a clever experiment, though not without flaws. The five-second turn system is an inspired idea, forcing you to think strategically within brief, high-pressure windows. You can move your party along a horizontal axis to dodge incoming attacks or line up better shots, adding an element of positioning usually absent from traditional turn-based games. Every weapon behaves differently—some fire in arcs, others explode in clusters, and a few pierce multiple enemies—so understanding the rhythm of each encounter becomes crucial. Yet this system also reveals the game’s limitations. The chaotic pace can sometimes undermine precision, making it difficult to track every projectile or enemy on screen. A single mistake or misjudged movement can quickly spiral into disaster, especially since enemy waves grow larger and more aggressive as the game progresses. The thrill of improvisation is there, but so is frustration when the randomness of enemy patterns leaves you with little room to react. Outside of combat, the overworld serves mainly as connective tissue between encounters. You move across simple pixelated landscapes, searching for keys, health pickups, and ammunition. These sections offer brief moments of exploration, but they lack depth or variety. The maps are small, linear, and sparsely populated, functioning more as transitions than meaningful gameplay spaces. The title’s name, “The Random Encounter,” is literal—nearly every few steps triggers another battle, which quickly becomes the game’s dominant loop. While this repetition fits the old-school RPG formula, it can grow monotonous after extended play sessions. The charm of its design begins to fade once you realize that, despite the frenetic action, the overall structure remains quite shallow. The weapons are fun to experiment with, but the same enemy types and encounter patterns reappear frequently, reducing the sense of discovery that drives most successful RPGs. One of the most striking aspects of the game is how well it captures the absurd scale of Serious Sam’s combat within an RPG framework. Even though the perspective is different, the screen often fills with dozens—or even hundreds—of enemies rushing toward you. The sheer density of foes, coupled with limited time to react, evokes the same adrenaline rush as the mainline shooters. Every battle feels like a desperate last stand, forcing you to juggle ammo conservation, positioning, and health management simultaneously. Yet, as impressive as this concept is, it’s also where the cracks start to show. The difficulty curve is erratic, with sudden spikes that feel more punishing than fair. Resource scarcity, such as limited ammo or healing items, can compound the problem, leaving you underpowered in later fights. When combined with the game’s brevity—most playthroughs last only about two hours—it’s easy to feel like The Random Encounter never quite fulfills its potential before it ends. Narratively, the game is deliberately lightweight. The plot functions more as a loose excuse for action than a fully developed story. Sam’s one-liners and the occasional tongue-in-cheek dialogue exchanges keep the tone consistent with the main series, but there’s little in the way of character development or narrative tension. The game is self-aware enough to embrace its simplicity, poking fun at RPG conventions while celebrating the excesses of its source material. This approach works in context—Serious Sam has never been about complex storytelling—but it also contributes to the feeling that the game is more of a novelty project than a complete experience. When the credits roll after just a few hours, it feels abrupt, as though the concept had more room to evolve but was intentionally kept short and punchy. Despite its shortcomings, Serious Sam: The Random Encounter remains a memorable experiment in genre fusion. It proves that the essence of a franchise can survive even when transplanted into a completely different format. Vlambeer’s design philosophy—fast, reactive, and unashamedly chaotic—fits surprisingly well with Sam’s world, creating a strange hybrid that’s both playful and challenging. Its brevity, rough edges, and repetitive structure prevent it from achieving greatness, but it still offers a unique, energetic experience for those willing to embrace its quirks. It’s the kind of game that’s best enjoyed as a curiosity—a quick detour through familiar territory presented in an unfamiliar form. For fans of Serious Sam or retro-inspired indie design, it stands as a reminder that even the most explosive shooters can find new life in unexpected genres, so long as they retain the same reckless, joyful spirit that made them fun in the first place.
