Secrets of Me, developed and published by Dogenzaka Lab, is a short but striking otome visual novel that blends melodrama, obsession, emotional vulnerability, and dark romantic intrigue. While many titles in the genre lean toward lighthearted storytelling, Secrets of Me immediately positions itself in more provocative territory, beginning with the protagonist’s decision to undergo plastic surgery in a desperate attempt to win the attention of the man she adores. This choice isn’t treated as a joke or a shallow plot device—rather, it anchors the narrative in themes of insecurity, self-image, and the lengths someone might go to feel loved. From this foundation, the story branches into multiple romance routes where relationships twist and unravel in unexpected ways, mixing elements of mystery, manipulation, and psychological tension alongside the expected affection and drama. The heart of the game lies in its character routes. Each of the love interests—ranging from a calm and enigmatic surgeon to a nosy detective, a flirtatious model, a polished CEO, and even a romance novelist—brings a different tone and dynamic to the story. Although these archetypes are familiar within the otome genre, Secrets of Me uses its darker premise to frame their interactions with a little more intensity than usual. Some routes move toward healing and genuine emotional connection, while others lean into dangerous attraction or morally ambiguous charm. The branching narrative encourages replaying routes to see how each character reacts to the protagonist’s insecurities and how their personalities reveal themselves through romance, conflict, or revelation. Visually, the game carries many of the hallmarks of Dogenzaka Lab’s earlier works: expressive character sprites, polished CG events, and a clean, mobile-inspired UI. The art style is attractive and helps compensate for the game’s compact scale. Scenes are framed with bright colors and crisp lines, giving emotional moments an appealing clarity. Though the game’s origins as a mobile port are noticeable—particularly in the simplicity of its interface and occasional awkwardness in fullscreen mode—the presentation is still cohesive and charming. The soundtrack is understated but effective, supporting the emotional beats without overpowering the dialogue or atmosphere. Narratively, Secrets of Me is at its strongest when it leans into its darker undertones. The protagonist’s internal conflict, her fixation on her crush, and the disturbing truth she eventually uncovers create a sense of unease that sets this visual novel apart from more traditional otome offerings. The tone is not purely grim, however; moments of levity, flirtation, and warmth punctuate the story’s heavier beats, offering emotional contrast that keeps the routes engaging. Still, the rapid pacing—driven in part by the game’s short runtime—means some romantic arcs develop abruptly. While this is common in shorter otome titles, it can leave certain scenes feeling rushed, particularly when dealing with themes as sensitive as identity, stalking, or manipulation. The game’s brevity is both an asset and a limitation. With multiple endings and character paths, Secrets of Me offers clear replayability, but each route can be completed quickly, sometimes within a single sitting. Players who prefer lengthy, deeply layered romances may find the emotional payoff too modest, while those who enjoy concise, fast-moving stories will appreciate its accessibility. Some translation quirks and UI limitations occasionally disrupt immersion, but they rarely obscure the core experience. The Steam version includes achievements and a CG gallery, giving completionists extra incentive to explore every route. Ultimately, Secrets of Me is a compact, emotionally charged otome title that dares to explore romance from a more troubled and psychologically complex angle. It may not possess the depth or refinement of higher-budget visual novels, but its strong character art, bold premise, and willingness to tackle darker themes make it memorable within its genre niche. For players who enjoy otome games with a slightly twisted edge, or who appreciate stories centered on flawed, vulnerable protagonists, Secrets of Me delivers a compelling and distinctive experience—one that lingers precisely because of the secrets its characters keep and the emotional risks the narrative is willing to take.
