Secret Summoner, developed by Jiro's App and published by Waku Waku Games, is a compact strategy RPG that blends creature collection mechanics with puzzle-like stage design. Rather than relying on fast reflexes or large-scale exploration, it builds its identity around careful planning, summoning management, and short, self-contained battles. The premise follows a young summoner-in-training who sets out to correct misbehaving monsters, accompanied—quietly and humorously—by protective family members observing from behind the scenes. This light narrative framing gives the game personality without overwhelming the core gameplay loop. Progression unfolds across structured stages that typically range from a few minutes to around twenty minutes each. Every encounter demands deliberate thought: players weaken enemies through standard attacks and summoning tactics before attempting to form contracts with powerful foes. The contract system is central to the experience. After defeating certain monsters, players can recruit them into their grimoire, allowing them to be summoned in later battles. This collection element introduces long-term strategy, as assembling a diverse roster of creatures creates new tactical combinations and counterplay options for future stages. Combat mechanics are intertwined with a confidence system that rewards efficiency and momentum. Successfully chaining attacks and defeating enemies skillfully fills a confidence gauge, accelerating character growth and providing tangible feedback for well-executed play. Rather than simple grinding, progression feels directly tied to performance. Additionally, the game includes risk-reward mechanics such as high-damage techniques that temporarily restrict access to support systems in exchange for bonus experience. These layered systems encourage experimentation while maintaining balance between offense and defense. Visually, Secret Summoner embraces a retro pixel-art style reminiscent of classic handheld RPGs. Character sprites are colorful and expressive, and enemy designs are distinct enough to remain readable even during chaotic encounters. The interface is straightforward, clearly displaying key gauges and summoning information without clutter. While the presentation is modest in scope, it aligns well with the game’s focused, tactical nature. The overall campaign length offers a moderate playtime, generally around a dozen hours depending on player efficiency and experimentation. Because stages are compact and replayable, the structure lends itself well to short play sessions. While the game does not aim to deliver expansive world-building or cinematic storytelling, its charm comes from its mechanical cohesion and accessible pacing. Ultimately, Secret Summoner stands out as a niche but thoughtful indie strategy RPG. Its contract-based creature system, performance-driven progression, and bite-sized stage format create a satisfying gameplay loop that rewards careful planning rather than raw speed. Though its scale and production values remain modest, it offers a distinct tactical experience for players who appreciate structured challenges and summoning-based mechanics in a retro-inspired package. Rating: 6/10
I've been enjoying my time with this game quite a lot so far especially on hard mode (the way it's meant to be played), but I cant seem to progress past the forest stage; I've tried everything from defeating all the monsters from each path to even completing it through both hard and easy, I'm not sure if it's just a glitch or I'm just stupid, but nonetheless I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me.
