Man I Just Wanna Go Home.
it got sick style, it got music, it got head, what else do you need? works great on deck
I loved how its difficulty amplifies the surreal atmosphere and the one in your head. Every success feels earned in this chaotic world. It’s weird, punishing, and unforgettable in the best way possible. I didn't even expect to enjoy a platformer so much.
This is not a personal dig on the developer. The pieces are there, the art, the music. I am not someone who enjoys waiting as a game mechanic, nor the speed of this game. I'm glad to have supported an indie developer and got the soundtrack as well, but this is not a game that I personally enjoyed. Thank you for your hard work,
Really unique, avante garde art piece of a game. It doesn't really fit neatly into platformer or shooter as a genre, but it's got both elements. It's got the fingerprints of the developer all over it in the best way possible. The moon level sequence was so damn cool. If you're looking for something that feels like a commercial game, this isn't it - there's conventions it doesn't follow, it at times is actively hostile/deceptive to the player (complementary), and there are plenty of rough rough edges. If you like interesting stuff that will challenge your comfort and tastes, this is for you.
Deranged Art, Absurd Story, Catchy Music, Fun Gimmicks and Not TOO Rage Inducing
That last one is essential for me because despite growing up on platforming games in the 90's (yes I'm very old), I never really cared for the absurdly-long-level-with-a-hundred-enemies-and-a-boss-fight-you-gotta-do-all-in-one-life school of game design. I'm also not the biggest fan of newer games building on that experience. I got to the second level of Super Meat Boy's bonus world and called it quits, and I couldn't beat the bonus stage to unlock the "I Wanna Be the Guy" skin. My biggest concern with this game was it would devolve into a kind of "Kazio Mario" level of torture where you'll need to run multiple pixel perfect obstacle courses in a row to finish a single level. Thankfully, that's not the case. I'd describe the difficulty as mostly "hard but manageable". It does troll you a bit, there's some frustrating parts, but most of the levels are fairly short and it plays by the rules it establishes. There's almost a puzzle like quality at times where figuring out how to progress is more important than timing and precision. Which I think is a good thing because it means you don't have to be a platforming expert to enjoy what's a very entertaining game. The plot is you are a head who turned in his body when he retired to live peacefully with his four wives. But your body comes back and kidnaps all of them seemingly out of resentment for splitting with him in the first place. It's every bit as silly as it sounds and I was looking forward to every cutscene because of how funny I found them. I think what makes the humor work is there's a sincerity to the characters in these otherwise nonsense situations, which is also present in the voice acting. As advertised, every scene has voice acting and the actors aren't trying to sound hammy. It's just a very matter of fact delivery for you having to run a race now where the loser explodes, as if that's something you just gotta deal with in your day. There's JUST enough structure to keep things focused while otherwise being insane, kind of like the movie Airplane. The artwork is wonderful. It's twisted but has kind of a soft, friendly presentation. People mention Cruelty Squad and there's definitely shades of that with the crude use of mechanical and fleshy objects being mashed together into unnerving textures. But the weird enemies and creatures are also kind of cute at the same time? You can see it in the main character alone: He's a living head with two big human feet and NOTHING else... but he seems like a nice guy. You see him sniffing flowers in the opening scene. He should be horrifying but instead I kind of want to hang out with him. There's a good variety of gimmicks and power-ups to keep things fresh, none of which I feel outstayed their welcome. It's a very frugal game in the sense if the creator couldn't come up with a new way to use something, they moved onto something else. I also like there's a kind of flow to everything. You can only scream for so long before you explode, enemies get knocked back based on how much you scream, but there's no gauges or health bars. There's clear visual indicators (you get more red the closer you are to death) that tell you what you need to know without breaking the atheistic. There's also a really novel feature with AVOIDING a certain item every level. Touching them doesn't hurt you, but there's a secret count of how many you're allowed to touch only revealed when you reach the end of a level, and if you touched too many you failed and gotta start over. It creates an extra bit of tension on your first completion. You effectively have a health bar but don't know how many hits you can take until the first time you reach the goal. It's a fun way the game screws with the compulsive need to grab every collectible that almost every game teaches you. I'd say my chief complaints with the difficulty feel more like design shortcomings. There is some trolly enemy placement, especially of the fists that LOVE to literally push you off of ledges. But the part I got stuck most on was these couple levels with super speed being injected into you when you ran over a needle. Jumping felt delayed when it hadn't otherwise and making it worse is there wasn't any good indicators of when to jump. I eventually trial-and-errored my way through but that was one of the only time things truly felt kind of broken. The other might be penultimate level where there's LOADS of guns to pick up and use but the timing of it felt very awkward. Enemies who hit you also knock the gun out of your hand and you can't pick up that gun again. I feel like this is supposed to be a cathartic segment of just mowing down the pricks who've literally been shoving you around all game, but I had to carefully plot out the first few pickups before I got to do that. The final boss is also pretty nasty, but it IS the final boss, you get a SECOND hitpoint to give you a tiny bit of wiggle room, and with enough runs you'll get its patterns down. It felt very satisfying beating it. My other biggest criticism would be the game feels too short. It took me about 3 hours to finish what I think is everything, and I had spent almost an hour with the demo that has the first five levels, so let's say four hours for an experienced but not expert player. I don't believe longer automatically equals more value and I really appreciate short but sweet games I can complete in a day. That said, you could tell the creator was getting gassed out in the back half of the game even if you didn't find the bonus stage where they flat out state they're exhausted and are subbing in some selfies to save time on making story panels. It's understandable with mostly a one-person team with a few contributors and I DO forgive the transgression. But it is a flaw, especially cause there was plenty of room left for a few more story beats and more levels just with the existing mechanics. My favorite level is a bonus one with low gravity where your screaming propels you backwards. It's clever, it's different, it feels REALLY good when you get the hang of it, and it's in ONE level. One BIG bonus level, but you could have had a whole world's worth of levels around those mechanics without it getting stale. That said, easier said than done. I'm not the one who's going to MAKE all those levels and playtest them. But I bring it up as part of your consideration for if you want to buy the game. The achievements are basically for beating the game and finding the bonus levels, it doesn't have a crazy hidden super hard mode that I'm aware of. I don't think it really needed one, but a high score (or low score actually) tracker for each level would have been a nice incentive for people to try self-imposed challenges. I got the game for a little over $7 because I got it on sale at launch and with it bundled with the creator's previous game (Man I Just Wanna Go Home), which I already own which lowered the price a little more. And I'm very happy with my purchase. This made for a very fun afternoon. I wish there had been more but what I got I really liked, and the short playtime means it's the kind of thing I might want to replay entirely on a whim in the future. Also there were a couple of killer songs I'm gonna go look up right now cause I want to hear them again. tl;dr - Lots of screaming. Lots of head. Highly recommended.
I'm such a bipedalcel.
