Curator page here--> DaRevieweD #193 <-- New review every Weekend

"DAZE GONE BY, AND STILL I THINK-"
Here's The Thing: You are ???, ex-member of a video game development quartet formed during your high school extracurricular club. Others have gone onto bigger and better things, but here you are daydreaming and playing back the relaxed past everywhere you look. Danger! Reality may be closer than it appears~
[+] PROS;
:) A LITTLE BIT OF DAYS, LITTLE BIT OF~ This unusual combo of puzzle game meets a stroll down memory lane in the first person is, as it so eagerly put forth, boring but somehow also engaging in gameplay. I know! Barely made sense to me too, but it did… The former is a strategy game where you reach the end with a limited number of moves, clearing the path of enemies and not being dealt any damage. Failure to do any of these will reset the level! The latter is more passive entertainment, but one that’s emotionally latching whereby it involves you looking sullenly around a room and silently sighing as you fixate on mementos slowly stuffed into the once-busy space… Mustering examples of works like it was no walk in the park. But just like the deservingly “head bang against the nearest wall” solution to one of them puzzles, it finally came to me. It struck gold when it came to the balance of brain teasers and story screen time, mastered by none other than Dungeons of Dreadrock. But hitched with the genuine, profound and “depressing” subject matter of The Immaculate Drag! My one-and-only playthrough, all in a single sitting mind you, occupied me for slightly less than eighty minutes but it put me through the wringer. I’m talking approximately a couple of telling glances, dozens of philosophical ponderings and tearjerking self-reflection. It’s one of those rarities where the gameplay and story blend into each other so well, that you don’t end up picking favorites~ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2859061727 :) VIRTUALLY-REALITY. Initially I had my doubts because of the wildly irreverent art direction, but then they clasped perfectly like jigsaw pieces. The game has you divide your time between three graphical styles intended to transition you into three entirely different dimensions, so to speak. Firstly, the VR-AR viewpoint, which acts as the extension of you as the player, and how you’re to do most of your recalling. Situated in an ordinary yet very serenely pleasant clubroom, just as it was to the occupants, with a handful of diverse props to take you away. Secondly, the game world; a fictional relic of your beads of sweat, pools of blood and buckets of tears. Two-dimensional in appearance, but the sprites were oh-so-cutely drawn up and flashily animated! Last but not least, the minimalist podcast filter made up of avatars and an audio equalizer that were soothing to let play out. The score was orchestrated to suck you dry, going from a quiet, tepid and subdued vibe at the onset. Progressing into dramatically sad and disillusionment as you get into it. Until at long last, a melancholia is all that fills the room. Sometimes I do wish it had more emotive range instead of the one-note recital, but luckily the words are instruments all their own~ :) YA’LL JUST HAVE TO CC FOR YOURSELF! You may think the scoop is about the videogame development journey of the believably acted quartet consisting of the dependable President; the withdrawn and sensitive artist, ZhiZhi; the charismatically carefree programmer, LiLi; and the seriously driven narrative designer, CC! And you’d be right of course, but just like the various looks of the game and the multiple levels to the puzzles, the story is far from singular in nature. In fact, it would be blasphemous to simply call it that- a “story”, when it is as tangible as life itself, but alas we must give it a name… It’s a story of stories that date as far back to the humble beginnings of club mates turned friends who created games for the fun of it, but then drift apart when greeted by the fork in the road. It has to do with the gang now too and their looking back on the days when anything seemed possible. Having said that, it’s just as every bit about the video game characters in “Kanata’s Bizarre Adventure”, their debut. So, these all intersect, spill over and then branch off into takeaways that are plausible and life-affirming. But whether that be reassurance, discontentment or repentance is not clear. What is, however, is that it’s a work of art you replay in your head and that which fills your heart~ :) A PUZZLE GAME CALLED “LIFE”. I swear, at some point it sounded like my undergraduate thesis, in that it delves into and dissects what a “game” is, in this day and age. Is it a plaything? A career or a pastime? A memory that’s both good and bad! A yardstick of how far we’ve come? A product in the strictest sense of the word, or is it many more symbols!? This game is not all about games and playing around; it scared me straight with its no-BS discussion about the much-needed swallowing of bitter pills. Namely, the distinction between real life work & hobbies, that crushed me for weeks on end as a self-proclaimed reviewer and I’m still reeling from it… I honestly am clueless about what is to become of me, and so I may well soon be the sentimental person that this game is describing. Which leads me to my final point, the glue holding this game together- “Golden days”. Now, we all have them, or have had them eventually. I used to think I did, but then after some soul-searching, I realized that I have yet to do anything worthwhile… No, that’s not true, but rather this “being in one’s prime” differs according to the time, place and perspective. Even in the course of the game, it’s never explicitly stated how far into the future exactly or who among the quartet in particular was doing the reminiscing~ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2859062714
[-] CONS;
:( A BIG. DOLL. DUD! The experience was almost like a diamond, flawless and impenetrable, but nevertheless it’s not without its own nemesis; itself! Here I go again, being all dramatic, when really what I meant were some design choices. The first of which, is in the accessing and bypassing of the podcast where you can rewind and forward the commentary, but you cannot skip it right off the bat. Similarly, you are not allowed to replay the puzzle levels, not without a complete fresh start, that is… While poetic, if not in-keeping with the sentimentality & harshness of real life, it should have given in to the compromise. Lastly, some of the visual effects in the tempers-flared finale were not only distracting, unflattering but they also completely engulfed the credits, like the captions themselves.
BUGS:
x I don’t think any slipped past me.
NITPICKS:
~ Second boss fight wasn’t all that clear. It got frustratingly tedious to solve! ~ Clicking the bottom of the screen (even upon completion of a puzzle) will still summon the podcast entry. ~ Way expensive DLC, like more than the game itself!
"DAYS WHEN I COULDN’T LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT-!!"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2859064637 Last Words? Golden meta puzzle-narrative developed with utter relatability, empathy and sincerity. Not once losing momentum & sight of its goals. Saying sayonara to it drove me to tears, then back to reality~
9.8 / 10

Shoutout to
Indie Gems,
for GEMME-ing a key!
