«Saving Grace»
Introduction
Getting more and more into the horror genre in the past years, a small title, Saving Grace, seemed to look compellingly enough for me to try it out, even though I was not exactly sure about what should I expect. Well, unfortunately, I still ended up quite disappointed as I could not find an aspect that would make the time I spend with this game worth it.
Story
As your daughter, Grace, gets kidnapped by mysterious hooded cultists, your wife tries to find her. Unsuccessfully. After spending some time alone in sadness and despair, you decide to go search for them. Yet, it is not that simple as there are forces of evil in your way, coming right from Hell itself, who seem to have their own twisted and devious plan for your family. The main problem is that the story is not gripping at all. I had absolutely zero interest in caring about characters, finding out about the “mysteries”, or even being thrilled about how the game might end. That accompanies another issue, which is that the story is overly ambitious, trying to jump in timelines and include prophecies that result in a dreadful, uninteresting mess. On top of that, both endings try to question your final choice. It falls completely flat, and I did not care. It does not mean that the broad general idea of the story is bad, per se. However, trying to fit the search for your family, flashbacks into your past, random several fighting sequences, uncovering the truth about the cult, and exploring Hell itself while keeping in mind various prophecies is just way too much for an hour and a half. Sometimes stories do not have to be overcomplicated to have an impact, especially with such a small amount of playtime. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2411537270
Gameplay
Saving Grace suffers from the same problem with its gameplay. It tries, once again, offer too much for its own good. This title fails to provide a compelling experience because all the different gameplay segments last only for a few minutes. It is not enough for what it tries to do, and perhaps it would be better if it would stick with one defined style, which would be more fleshed out and satisfying to play. This title tries to set an eerie atmosphere at first, making you find numerous items, so you could proceed to the next part. Sometimes it works a bit during scripted events, but the whole town is unnecessarily large. That results in you wandering around while nothing is happening. There is no feeling of being threatened by the unknown. No tension. Maybe it would be better if one of the cultists would roam the area or guard certain places, but you will not find it there. It is also worth mentioning that the game basically tells you where you should go look for the said items. After that, Saving Grace suddenly changes its pace by giving you a curved sword and basically ordering you to get to the end and kill every demon in your way. While I appreciate the details like cutting off the limbs and such, it feels out of place. The game just stopped with trying to be atmospheric, changing itself into a boring hack-and-slash, as the demons behave like slow zombies rather than somehow intelligent beings. Then it changes the pace again by giving you a handgun. However, you have to kill cultists now. I would imagine that fighting a secret cult that kidnaps people for their twisted rituals would be somehow challenging or that the game would at least make it intriguing. No. These fellows decide that the very best thing to do against a person with a gun is to slowly run towards them with nothing but fists. Not only that it looks ludicrous at best, but it is also not enjoyable. And even if you somehow manage to die, you just respawn a meter or two next to your lovely killer. That is dull, especially as the combat is apparently important in this title. Perhaps the best part of Saving Grace is its boss fight, which is heavily marketed as some sort of selling point. And it is okayish, with a few different attack patterns. That only makes me think why other enemies did not get such treatment? Why the game tried to be an atmospheric horror when it turns into a mindless action halfway through? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2411537348
Audiovisuals
I would say that the visuals are enough for what the game is. Sure, they are not astonishing, but not that bad either. Some of the details hidden throughout the level are pretty nice, so there is definitely some thought in it. What I had a problem with is the game’s voice acting. Sometimes it is serviceable, and sometimes it is so bad that I could not understand some of the words properly. Sometimes it is missing completely. And there are pop-ups with the speakers’ caricature at times instead of normal subtitles or voice, which ruins any last bits of immersion completely.
Conclusion
And that is all. It is a shame, really. While I believe that the general idea behind Saving Grace might be interesting, it does not work in such a short game. There just is not something I would recommend this title for, and I probably will not even remember Saving Grace soon. Perhaps some future attempts will be more thought-out, but this one did not work for me. PC Specs & Performance
As for the performance… It is quite bad. Saving Grace runs on the Unity engine, and I often had drops down to 30 frames per second, resulting in a tedious experience. The game was tested with an i5 8300, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB RAM, running at the highest settings, at 1920x1080 resolution. I would expect much better performance, especially as it is more crucial to the first-person shooter.
Acknowledgement
This game was provided for review purposes by the developer through DitD.
Curator Link
Remember that Blue Lips Never Lie!
Curator page here--> DaRevieweD #64 <-- New review every Sunday
The moment I saw this game's store page description, it just clicked with something within. Maybe it's the fact I watch a ton of thriller (horror in general) films. Or was I particularly bored that day? I cannot for the life of me.. Anyway, cut short- the dev himself approached me (thanks so much dude) and that's when I finally remembered about it! That's where we're at now~ Saving Grace (SG) is the first to come out of the fires of Thomas JC Ironmonger, a solo dev from the UK. It provides a nice contrast to the plight faced by the abducted like in Don't be Afraid. Neither go all out in emotional investment but SG had a huge weight floated away from my bruised heart making the descent into oblivion oddly hella therapeutic~
"Grace Us With Your Presence!"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369493279 The Gist: Play the part of a father whose daughter gets nabbed by assailants covered from head to toe. With no hint as to the rationale of the seemingly personal vendetta, you go along with it cause your hands are tied. After witnessing what appears to be a cult and satanic rituals however- it's clear you must also be willing to do whatever necessary to save her life come what may!
! Analyze that title real good! GENIUS~

[+] PROS;
(a) I'll be Damned Divided into stages, the objectives typically involve collecting items and are displayed on a tome you magically whip out! Notes automatically get displayed when you hover over them and may offer you salvation where you feel there is none ;) It kicks off slow-burn like a psychological horror and gets more intense by the halfway mark- the action and heavy metal get blasted off. Materializing weaponry to fend off cultists, demons and an epic level of a boss fight!! It has you set in the fun department but not without some adaptation~ Two endings with literally the only outcomes I can picture to land the "hell freezes over" phrase tactfully and somehow remorsefully. (b) Corporeal Punishment Narrative invites you with questions, plunging you into a parent's worst nightmare! Like you're tied to a melting cauldron, gradually roasted alive. That's how hopeless the situation was! Imagine "Evil Dead" crossed with any post-apocalyptic film…! You know it'll be intriguing and conquering it will scratch that rotten itch!! (c) Hot as Hell in Here. The maps are big showcasing a moody, depressingly foggy town with dark interiors. Then to more biblically hellish landscapes of raining fireballs and crimson tones. It's impossible not to be impressed and wanting to stay longer, but alas your child awaits... The cloaked enemies are downright terrifying as they charge towards ya! (d) Sinners and Ain'ts... SCARY: One, your child is an extension of yourself and privy to your
past mistakes
, which makes you shudder as to how you've been living your life. Two, the aspect of repentance. SG is a judgmental game, it pits the unnamed(?) protagonist, a la you to make the right choice. But then again, do people really change? The "bad" ending is one such case. It makes you take a good, long look at your putrid being. Three, the fact that you make your way to hell is cynically on-the-nose already, but it's also
foreshadowing
that you may be warmer and more
at home
than you might think.
[-] CONS;
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369496706 (i) Oh Sweet Je- I have to talk about the slow, aimless starting segment which didn't fit with the rest of the game. A maze with tons of small rivers that serve no purpose beyond making the scenario shallow, like the water they hold. There is no swimming animation (nor will you drown) and so you awkwardly sink and walk on the bottom. As a matter of fact, the environments in general though pleasant to kill some time at first hides a deeper, boredom-filled with nothing to examine besides the occasional interactable tap or toilet. It physically hurts when the exploration feels and looks endless but as you try to go further- you'll come face first hard against the invisible, symbolic walls. (ii) The Devil's Tongue!! The voiceover wasn't too bad, but what baffles me was the inconsistency. Sometimes there are voiced ones, other times they are displayed as text on screen amidst the dialogue of other characters. Then suddenly a textbox in the style of a visual novel pop-up and I was absolutely phased out of the immersion. However, the ones with voices bring a separate issue... I couldn't understand it, which could be a result of the British dialect but exacerbated by the overdependence on voice-changing distorting effects, you know the ones used by kidnappers to make demands? There are subtitles thankfully but it's present during crystal clear moments and absent where I desperately need them. A.k.a. the hell parts which are dying for the because of
Lucifer's
demonic voice at almost incomprehensible pitch. (iii) Fall From Grace NITPICKS: Not game-breaking in any way but may sound fire alarms and put out immersion. For instance, the sprint, which has you slow down (not exhausted) and you have to press constantly shift every 10 seconds or so. Weapon range is a bit painful; makes me feel powerful but at what cost!? The katana is the worst offender with side swipes being whip-like and vertical slices as short as your pinky~ There is this sticky situation with stairs where it's smooth sailing coming up, until the top of the stairs where you are suddenly stuck and you have to jump each time. Don't get me started on that (too late)- the hop is so underwhelming, making open areas easy to get stuck in at the slightest height difference! Objects (and ragdolls) tend to be soft to the touch and may get pushed around too easily. There's a related achievement involving a football (knew I wasn’t sporty but dang) that took an unnecessary no. of tries as it kept getting caught somewhere. Some scares failed, like the very first
ambush
scene, where if you were quick to react, you'd see the cultist beeline through the kitchen table. Other fishier staging rest in the sound cues of the “boo” moments as they count on where you’re supposed to look. Story- I think, if anything really takes the cake. Things kept vague, with many details omitted, still trying to piece them together~ I’ll replay it for that (and DAT 1 achievement left XD).
"Hell Hath No Fury Like~"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369843653 FPS with a fiery semblance to DOOM going for it but all else echoed its own divineness. Opening’s akin to a lost soul and vexing designs exists- yet it weathers the depths of hell with no regrets~ I liked the procedural ramping of pacing; testing the waters first with a suffocating atmosphere and unease. Before deciding to raise the stakes and your heart rate with a challenge culminating in an overheated confrontation. The plot works wonders but is its own downfall due to some ambiguity. The overreliance of distortion in the voices neither gave the performances any more clout nor clarity. There is a plethora of issues that make it rough around the edges in terms of gameplay yet insubstantial to take away from the core joy~ They make it tougher to beat, heck even raises an eyebrow but if that don’t encapsulate the meaning of hell, I don't know what will!
8/10
Thomas is now one of my hottest, most promising indie horror devs of 2021 (still early lol). Heartfelt gratitude to RP for da key~
Nice atmospheric first person horror game. All about solving puzzles and not dying. Very easy to get killed as health is limited. Boss towards the end is a relentless w***er. For a one man dev team, this is a decent little time waster :)
This is my first Steam review so bear with me on this. I received this game from Thomas09 the developer himself. I don't personally know him, but I have played his indie games that he has put on the Game Jolt and Itch.io website. I can without a doubt tell you that he is on his way to making great indie games and has come a long way from his development beginnings. Saving grace puts you in the shoes of a father who has had his daughter taken from him and it is up to you to get her back from the cult that took her from you. Are you up to the task of putting everything ( your life, soul and sanity ) on the line to rescue your daughter Grace? Saving Grace takes roughly about an hour and a half to complete maybe two if you roam around and look at all the details that the developer put into the game. What Saving Grace lacks in high polished triple A graphics it totally makes up for in story and emotion. Saving Grace had me hooked from the beginning. Being a father with a daughter myself I was totally immersed in the gut wrenching feeling of having someone take my daughter from me and doing anything to get her back. If you like indie horror with a great story behind it I highly suggest you play Saving Grace.
There was alot of things i loved about the game. the part at the end where you got a ak-47 and just slayed everything in your path. highly recommend!
A fun horror game from a small indie developer. I'm not the biggest fan of horror games in general (or films), but I enjoyed playing the introduction of this game. You have to solve puzzles to advance into the game. If you're into horror games you'll enjoy it. A good entry horror game if you haven't played horror before.
It's an extremely well built horror environment, perhaps to a point of being slightly overwhelming soundscape-wise for my liking - but then I don't mesh well with horror generally, so I would say that's largely a personal foible. If you like horror games, this'll suit you immensely - hence why I write this review as 'recommended' To note, I suffered a bit of stuttering and/or frame drops around water environments, which did impact my experience - which being on the Unity engine and running on a 2060RTX, Ryzen 5-3600, with 32 gig RAM, should not be the case, and is the primary reason I put the game down, rather than anything which is designed into the game. I received this game free courtesy of E1M1 magazine, and I honestly would not have looked at this game of my own volition, and I honestly will say that it is not the game for me generally speaking, although as stated before if you do like horror I can certainly see the appeal to those of you who do.

I usually stay clear of things in the Horror genre, but Saving Grace had an alluring element of mystery that pulled me right to it. At first glance, the game may be a bit unorthodox and bizarre, but as you continue to play, you will find it to be the beauty of the world. Within the first few minutes, the ambiance infected me and there was a perpetual fear that lingered throughout the rest of the game. To me, this was the unique experience this game offered. The story of the game is a large concept in a small package and it actually surprised me when I had reached the end because I had expected to continue further. In retrospect, I am actually glad it ended how it did because the game/story may have became stale if forced to linger too long. When I completed the final task, I was content with everything and wholeheartedly enjoyed the short scary tale. Gameplay is very simple being an FPS when you have a gun in your hands, but mostly its also an exploration where haunting sounds will toy with your mind as you are piecing together the truth about "Saving Grace". If you are into Horror and are looking for a short experience of mystery, demons and prophecy, this game will be an enjoyable journey. Like with every Indie Game I play, I don't expect anything so that I may enjoy everything and Saving Grace was much more that what I initially thought.
