Its polished gameplay, satisfying progression, and unlockables make it hard to resist jumping into just one more run before calling it a night. The story doesn’t dive deep. It takes place in a world that was once tranquil and harmonious, but been suddenly thrust into turmoil. Out of this chaos, a tyrannical ruler emerges, seizing control and maintaining order through fear and force. However, as is often the case in these kinds of worlds, a group of unlikely heroes refuses to sit idly by. When it comes to gameplay, the controls are familiar, especially for fans of action platformers because it avoids any convoluted button combinations that might disrupt the pace. The core mechanics include basic movement, a responsive and effective jump, the ability to grab onto hooks, and a dash move that can also be activated mid-air. In addition to those, you’re given two offensive tools: your gun and your special power. The gun is straightforward and satisfying. There’s no need to conserve ammunition or repeatedly tap the fire button. As long as you’re holding down the trigger, it will keep firing. While limited to the four cardinal directions—up, down, left, and right— you can still take out those pesky flying enemies with relative ease. In the early stages, the gun’s range is a bit short. However, over time, you can upgrade it along with other stats to become much more formidable. Special ability operates a bit differently because it requires energy to use. Fortunately, energy pickups are quite common, dropping from defeated enemies and destructible objects throughout each stage. Each power comes with a different cost. Simple offensive powers like grenades might only use a couple of energy points, while more beneficial ones like medkits cost considerably more, sometimes up to 10 units. At the start, your default character is equipped with one power, but as you progress, you’ll discover many others hidden throughout the levels, especially behind destructible walls. However, you can only carry one power at a time. If you find a new one, you'll have to swap out the old. The good news is that dropped powers remain where you leave them. This means you can come back for them if you only needed to use something temporarily, like healing. New characters are unlocked by finding them during your missions. Each comes with their own starting power, a unique amount of health and shield, and most importantly, a distinct firing pattern. For example, while the initial hero might fire slow single shots, another character could shoot two projectiles simultaneously, but with less damage. Sadly, unlockable characters are not great and play worse than the first hero. This includes a fire-breather with almost useless range, and a guy where you have to mash the button for every bullet or hold it for a bigger exploding one. The gameplay loop revolves around completing a series of biomes, which are distinct environments filled with enemies, platforms, and traps. You need to clear these biomes in a set sequence, taking down the boss at the end of each one. However, completing all of them in one run is extremely difficult, especially at first. Chances are, you’ll die, return to your base, invest your earnings into upgrades, and then head back out stronger than before. While the biomes always appear in the same order, the actual layout of the stages is randomized. Each biome has a collection of pre-designed rooms that are shuffled together to form a unique stage every time you play. Most rooms are classic platforming challenges filled with enemies and hazards, but they’re not locked combat arenas. You’re free to move in and out of rooms without being forced to clear them, except during the occasional ambush which seals exits until all enemies are defeated. To make navigation easier, most rooms contain teleportation portals that let you zip around the biome, minimizing backtracking. In addition to enemy rooms, you’ll stumble upon shops where you can purchase new powers, or encounter NPCs offering side quests. These objectives are usually manageable and often completed during regular gameplay. Enemies drop both coins and energy, but the most valuable treasures are tucked away in hidden walls or locked chests. Chests require keys to open. These keys can either be bought from shops or found behind fake walls. The items inside are worth the effort. You might find boots that grant double jumps, caffeine that increase fire rate, explosive ammo, and more. Unlike powers, you can carry multiple items, and they stay with you until you die. Nearly every room hides at least one destructible wall, but they’re invisible unless you happen to shoot them. Over time, you’ll get better at spotting them based on level design patterns. These walls often contain extra coins, energy, health, shield units, keys, or collectible materials used for permanent upgrades back at base. Coins, however, are not carried over between runs, so you might as well use them on good items. Back at base, your progression is tied to building and upgrading various facilities. Unlocking new biomes and gathering specific resources opens up more upgrade options. Each building initially shows only one available upgrade, and you won’t know what the next one does until you purchase the current. These upgrades include better weapon damage, increased resource collection, improved boss rewards, and more. Helping NPCs during missions also enhances your base. You might assist a professor in the first biome or help an engineer construct elevators that let you skip biomes. New rooms are unlocked over time, including arenas for wave-based challenges or training rooms where you hone your skills by racing against a timer. Overall, the game nails that addictive “just one more run” feeling, as each attempt earns you rare resources and gradual upgrades that make every session feel rewarding.
10 tardises out of 10 Excellent platformer, you go in and bam - minus an hour of your life, I don't really like platformers, but indie games have been going great lately, if you like to hang out and kill your time in projects like: Loop Hero Vipvire survivor V rising Legend of grimrock And many similar games Then I recommend this game, it's the TARDIS of the gaming world, you go in for 5 minutes and leave after 2 hours
I’ve been following this game for a long time and was eagerly awaiting its release. I’m thrilled that it’s finally out—and it’s absolutely amazing! The pixel art is a treat for the eyes. The controls take some getting used to (no diagonal shooting), but overall, the game feels incredibly hardcore with tons of variety, which I love. As a fan of games that reward deep exploration, I really enjoy scouring every corner for loot and clearing levels of enemies, just like in the good old days. I died like a noob on the first boss because I rushed in without proper preparation, just sprinting through the level. But I’ll learn from my mistakes and keep enjoying the game to the fullest!
I am going to update my review because people need to play this game, dammit! Combined with the time I played with the demo, I put about 15 hours into this game and I have loved every single second of it. I am still finding new bosses, which is kinda insane, I still have items to unlock, and I haven't even beaten an entire run yet because it is freaking hard. But aren't these things what make a great roguelite? I sure think so! I haven't unlocked all of the playable characters yet either, but the ones that I have tried are all quite different. On top of doing a normal run, there are other things to do as well, such as a target practice section, fight arenas (that will 100% kick your ass), and a lot of side quests to complete over your many runs. But the main thing that really needs to be emphasize is how good the game feels to play. The enemies are all very different, especially regarding their attack patterns, and they need to be dealt with the use of some intelligence. If you blindly go in and try shooting everything, you are going to die. The high skill level needed to be good at this game makes every run exciting. Even getting bonkers synergies will not trivialize this game... you need to work for a win. Just about every item is very beneficial by itself and only a couple need to be coupled with other items (I am looking at you, item that makes everything explode) and the fact that I am still unlocking tons of stuff after 9 hours on the full game makes me happy. BUY THIS GAME AND EXPECT TO BE SURPRISED! Old review: Having spent a decent amount of time with the demo, I knew exactly what I was in for... and that is a great friggin time. The fighting style is a lot like Metroid, but adapted to a roguelike gameplay loop. The tutorial may start off slow, but after your first death, things really start to pick up. There are plenty of NPCs to give quests, plenty of unlockable upgrades, a healthy roster of characters, optional challenges, and secrets galore. The pixel art is very well done and the music is quite catchy. I really hope this game catches on because I can tell a lot of love went into it.
:leaCheese: :leaCheese: :leaCheese:
I like it!
I'll get a more updated review after I have more time in the game. This is a pretty fun roguelike with some older nes game influences. I'd say the metroid-like influence is pretty weak so far. There are some exploratory movement upgrades but the game is certainly more run around and clear rooms while powering yourself up to do more damage like a number of modern roguelikes. Pretty fun all around and I do like the style, music and how some characters work.
It's a fun game, I played in it a bit and can say that It was time well spent. At first It was a little boring but after playing a bit more I started liking it and I think I'll play it till the end. It resembles Rogue Legacy but with randomized variations of modificatory that you collect during your play, there're also mechanics of base building/upgrades. I recommend to play it
