Roommates is a choice-driven visual novel developed and published by Octaday, released on Steam on February 7, 2024. Its premise is much more intimate and contemporary than the title alone suggests: rather than following campus life or a broad life-sim structure, the game centers on a protagonist who has recently entered society, struggled to find a satisfying job, and ends up sharing an apartment with three women, leading into a romance-focused story about cohabitation, attraction, and the social complications that come from living under the same roof. The Steam listing frames the experience around this shared-living setup and presents it as a narrative game built around multiple relationship paths and branching choices. The game’s biggest appeal lies in that setup. “Living together” stories work best when they can turn ordinary routines into emotionally charged moments, and Roommates clearly leans into that formula. The apartment is not just a backdrop but the center of the drama, because proximity naturally creates tension, familiarity, jealousy, and opportunities for connection. Everyday scenes such as conversations at home, shared downtime, and private one-on-one moments become the main engine of the story. That makes the game less about external plot twists and more about interpersonal chemistry. For players who enjoy visual novels that focus on romance, attraction, and domestic closeness, that structure is inherently appealing because it keeps the emotional stakes immediate and personal. The Steam page’s emphasis on “three lovely beauties” and a “wonderful journey” makes it clear that the game is selling fantasy and relationship progression first, with the shared apartment as the fantasy’s central mechanism. As a visual novel, Roommates stands or falls on the strength of its routes, dialogue flow, and character appeal. Because the premise is simple, the characters have to do most of the heavy lifting. A game like this succeeds when each roommate feels distinct enough to justify a separate route, with her own temperament, conversational energy, and emotional arc. The appeal is not simply in choosing among three options, but in getting the sense that each route offers a different mood and different type of romantic development. Even without elaborate gameplay systems, a romance VN can be satisfying when the writing gives each heroine enough personality that players feel encouraged to replay for alternative paths. Roommates appears designed exactly around that repeat-play structure, using its apartment setup as a branching social space where the player’s choices shape which relationship deepens and how the overall story unfolds. The pacing of this kind of game is usually one of its most important qualities, and Roommates benefits from having a premise that does not need to overcomplicate itself. Since the hook is straightforward, the story can move quickly into the interactions that players actually came for. Instead of building a giant world or juggling a large supporting cast, it can focus on scenes of growing familiarity, flirtation, and shifting emotional boundaries inside a small domestic setting. That narrower focus can be a strength. In many romance visual novels, the most memorable moments are not dramatic external events but smaller scenes where characters open up, reveal insecurity, or let their guard down. A shared-apartment setup is well suited to that tone because it creates natural excuses for repeated contact and gradual intimacy. Presentation also matters a lot in a title like this. Even when the mechanics are mostly choice-based, visual novels depend heavily on the attractiveness of their character art, the clarity of their interface, and the mood created by backgrounds and CG scenes. SteamDB indicates the game uses Ren’Py, which suggests a fairly standard visual novel framework rather than a highly experimental structure, and that is not necessarily a drawback. For romance VNs, familiarity can help the player settle into the experience, because it keeps attention on the character scenes rather than on unusual systems. If the artwork is appealing and the scene transitions are smooth, a conventional interface is often exactly what the game needs. One important point in evaluating Roommates is that it appears to have been received decently by its niche audience. Third-party tracking sites report a strongly positive user-review trend on Steam, which suggests the game is landing reasonably well with the players who are actually seeking out this kind of romance-focused visual novel. That does not automatically mean it is exceptional, but it does indicate that the game is likely delivering on its premise. In niche VNs especially, that matters more than trying to satisfy every possible audience. A title like this does not need to reinvent the medium to succeed; it mainly needs to offer appealing heroines, readable pacing, and enough route variety to make its fantasy engaging. Its weaknesses are also fairly easy to predict. A romance VN with a compact premise can feel limited if the writing is uneven or if the routes are too similar to each other. Without complex gameplay systems, there is not much to fall back on if the player does not connect with the cast. The same goes for replay value: multiple routes only matter if they feel genuinely different in tone and payoff. If the heroines’ paths are too structurally similar, the second or third playthrough can start to feel like repetition rather than discovery. Likewise, because the premise is built around cohabitation fantasy, players looking for broader narrative ambition, deeper simulation mechanics, or more elaborate world-building may find the experience narrower than the title initially suggests. Still, judged on what it seems to be trying to do, Roommates looks like a focused and competent romance visual novel. It understands its core appeal and builds the entire experience around it: shared living space, repeated contact, branching affection, and character-centered fantasy. That kind of clarity can be a real advantage. Rather than stretching itself into something larger and less coherent, it appears content to deliver a compact relationship-driven experience for players who already know they enjoy this style of interactive fiction. For that audience, the smaller scope can actually make the game feel more comfortable and direct, because it gets to the heart of the romantic setup quickly and stays there. Overall, Roommates comes across as a modest but effective visual novel for fans of intimate, route-based romance stories. Its strength is not mechanical depth or narrative complexity, but the immediate charm of its premise and the replayable structure that comes from living with three potential love interests under one roof. It is the kind of game that succeeds best when approached with the right expectations: not as a sprawling life simulator, but as a focused apartment romance story built around character interactions and branching choices. For players who enjoy that niche, it likely offers a relaxed and satisfying run through a familiar but appealing setup. Rating: 8/10
