Romeo Must Live

TL;DR: I can't recommend this game due to the price versus the content, especially in the realm of the offered sexual content. If you're here expecting porn, you're going to be disappointed. 4 sex scenes with only 1 image per scene and lackluster dialogue during the sex scenes. Given the price tag, you're way better off searching elsewhere for an erotic experience. If the "Lewd Romeo and Juliet" aspect sounded interesting to you, 3 out of the 4 sex scenes are with unique characters not from the original work, and the last is Juliet. ----- Your first question may be in regards to how closely this resembles the original story, to which the answer is: Not really close at all. Aside from some namedrops, most of the characters really aren't from the original and the game is mostly a spin-off with a take on a less-violent form of moving through the story. + Minor spelling/grammatical errors, usually as harmless as a misplaced comma or an easily-overlooked misspelling. The Config dialogue window IS still in Japanese and wasn't translated but that's honestly really harmless. + Star Wars references out the wazoo when it comes to General Kenob-- N*groni (his name is censored on Steam lmao). Also a Mario reference. + Art is really unique and stylized. The eyes aren't for everyone, if you don't like characters staring deep into your soul, you may be a bit put off, but it's not really a big deal or worth deducting points for. - There are 4 sex scenes if you have the 18+ DLC. All of the scenes consist of one image per scene with no alterations to it and the sex scenes themselves are pretty short with uninteresting dialogue. - There's only a small handful of character models. Romeo, Juliet, N*groni, and the three additional girls you can woo are the only ones with models, even if other characters are present. This isn't terrible, but for the price I was hoping for some more substance. - Short; Not technically an issue but for the price, I was hoping for more in terms of gameplay length. - Very little actual ties to "Romeo and Juliet." I was kind of hoping for a lewdification of the Romeo and Juliet tale, but it was kind of just an entirely separate story that is loosely based on the original work.

[b]Note:[/b] A kind friend gifted me a digital copy of this game. ^^ [i]Romeo Must Live[/i] is a comedic visual novel developed and published by Little Black Book Entertainment. It is very loosely based on Shakespeare's famous [i]Romeo and Juliet[/i], and you take on the role of Romeo Montague, who has fallen in love with Juliet Capulet and wishes to marry her. Rather than go through the traditional route of secretly getting married and so forth, Romeo and Juliet want to get married with the blessings from both their houses and to do so peacefully. Thus, Juliet suggests that Romeo enlists the help of General Negroni, a retired mercenary who is known for being the smartest man in Verona and can help people out with their problems. That's the basic story premise, so I'll stop my synopsis here to avoid spoilers. XD In regards to the gameplay, several choices are presented as you progress through the story. Depending on the choices made, you'll get one of ten endings, which are tied to Steam achievements. (There's one additional Steam achievement for starting the game.) At the time of this review, Steam achievements won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited". A few CGs are present as well although they can only be accessed and then viewed afterwards in the CG gallery by installing the 18+ patch. In addition, a few tracks are present but no voice acting. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. This visual novel caught my interest after a friend gifted me a copy and I had a chance to read the store page for it, despite that by now, there have been many unique takes on [i]Romeo and Juliet[/i]. However, it was only recently that I got around to playing it, as I felt like playing a game on the shorter side. With that said, I'll first talk about the story. Even though it's based on [i]Romeo and Juliet[/i], it barely has anything to do with the original play. Actually, all you'd need to do is change the characters' names and maybe the names of places, and you'd have a passable story. Although I liked the idea, the comedy felt like it was bordering too much on the slapstick side at times. Negroni's plan to help Romeo win over Juliet's father was convoluted, but to the credit of the writer(s), this is directly stated by one of the characters at some point. Also, I played the story with the 18+ patch (despite that I didn't want to, but I'll give more details later), and the sex scenes felt fan servicey and lackluster. They really aren't necessary to progress the story. In addition, even though it's Romeo's goal to marry Juliet, the story steers things in a direction such that Romeo would be better off marrying one of the women he meets along the way. Of course, the best ending is to have Romeo and Juliet get married, but it does take quite a bit of work to get there. As for the gameplay, this is where I have problems. Although I did obtain all of the Steam achievements, it isn't actually possible to do so unless you install the 18+ patch. Otherwise, the game softlocks, particularly when you're going down the happy ending with Romeo and Juliet. This annoyed me quite a bit since if a game has the option of an adult DLC/patch, I usually choose not to install it since I feel like it tends to lean towards the fan service side of things. Of course, I don't mind adult content, and I've certainly played and reviewed my fair share of games with them, but I don't like it if you're not really given the choice, which is what happened here. In regards to the writing, it's passable although nothing spectacular. Several typos, grammatical errors, etc., are present, which could definitely use an English proofreader to fix. However, the pacing felt fine, and events never felt dragged out. Regarding the art, I liked how well drawn the sprites and backgrounds are. The colors feel soft, and you really feel like you're in 16th century Verona, Italy. I just wish that there had been more CGs, especially since the ones that are present are in regards to [spoiler]sex scenes that Romeo has with various women[/spoiler]. With the music, I noticed that only a few tracks are present. However, they feel appropriate for the story's setting. As I mentioned earlier, there's no voice acting, but it isn't unusual for a lot of indie VNs not to have them. Overall, would I recommend [i]Romeo Must Live[/i]? This is one of those times that I really can't. As much as I wanted to like the story and give it a chance, the one thing that dragged things down for me was the 18+ patch since I needed to install it in order to get all of the achievements. (Yes, the patch is free, but as I said earlier, I'd rather choose not to view 18+ content if the option is given, generally.) Also, since the game took me around 2.5 hours to complete, I can't recommend it at the current asking price. If you choose to purchase this game, definitely hold off for a good sale. Short, fun and charming game. You wont find anything too deep or ground breaking story here, but the drawing is nice enough, music is fitting, enough choices for you to put in personality of Romeo. For the price, it is good enough. Though if author want to make more of VN may I suggest put a portrait of the character down next to to text so we can observe the change in facial expression.

An alternative version of the well-known tragedy. It is often used to torture kids during English lessons. As stated above, the devs were inspired by the classic school lecture to spin their own story. Here you're put into the shoes of Romeo, a handsome Italian fellow, who seeks a solution to the family feud blocking his marriage with Juliet. As the title suggests, one of the tasks is to avoid untimely demise at the hands of cruel fate. The take on the tale is mostly frivolous, but a certain dose of seriousness dictated by the concurrent era is present. Still, don't expect much elaborate writing here; expect a light, easily digestible narrative that even a younger audience can absorb (without a patch ofc). Out of all VNs produced or published by the Little Black Book Entertainment I played so far, this one contains the most endings, precisely 10, but a healthy dose of linearity present in their other games lingers. A copious number of choices mixed into the story adds some unpredictability, but the difficulty of reaching desired outcomes stays within reasonable bounds. After a few hours, every nook and cranny can be explored, leaving no stone unturned, i.e., all achievement feats conquered for those who seek it. A standard gamut of in-game options is present here; perfectly functional, but nothing above it. Plenty of save slots ensure sufficient space for experimentation; however, the most recent save has to be found manually, as it is not the default one after pressing the load button. Also, the 'skip only read text' option does not work properly, and all text is skipped, regardless of the setting. Overall, I count this title as a mildly amusing experience, not a disappointment. Moreover, the price, especially when on sale, is more than reasonable (80% discount is decent). If you're familiar with other VNs from this dev, you'll know what to expect here. For the new players, I recommend waiting for the sale. The first thing after starting is the simplicity of the design. The menu screen looks bare-bones, devoid of character imo. This scarcity of lushness persists throughout the whole game. On top of that, the character sprites look way too samey and bland. Also, there is a noticeable lack of pose and emotional variety here. Furthermore, despite it being an 18+ (with a patch) vn, this element is very undercooked. Scenes are short, lack build-up, and display only one CG with no variations. Budget production screams in your face. As for the audio side, well, not much to note here either. None of the tracks stand out, nor are they catchy. The tunes you'll hear here are rather uninspired, but they do fit the theme at least. AS you might expect from a budget title, there is no voice acting. Also, you won't hear any sound effects or see any special effects. Hscenes do not contain any moaning or squishy sounds typical of Japanese budget VNs. In other words, not much to hear here. Moving on. No bugs were encountered. Overall, there is nothing that really stands out here. The story is readable, but lacks tension or twists. The budget quality of the design and audio side does not do any favours to dev popularity. Also, the ero-elements are rather lacking. For those who enjoyed other works from this dev, expect the usual. For those who are new but don't mind budget quality, giving this title a go might not be the worst idea. The low cost does not fully excuse the low effort this VN presents; you can find worse among similarly priced games, though. Tepid recommendation from me: 5.2/10
