GOTY 2023

It was good I guess ? If I remember correctly you need to be lucky for certain amount of points. Often you won't get the colours you need to gather enough points so if you're lucky go for it, 64 achievements is always nice addition. Got this game with a Steam coupon.
ROMBY, developed and published by Black Lime Studio, is a compact puzzle experience that leans heavily on simplicity, repetition, and score optimization rather than narrative or mechanical innovation. At first glance, it presents itself as a casual, almost arcade-like title, inviting players into a clean grid-based system where colored shapes must be placed strategically to form lines and clear space. The premise is easy to grasp within minutes, but like many minimalist puzzle games, its staying power depends entirely on how much satisfaction a player derives from refining efficiency and chasing higher scores. The core gameplay revolves around placing sets of pieces on a board and aligning at least four matching colors in a row to clear them. While this might sound reminiscent of classic match-style games, ROMBY distinguishes itself by emphasizing spatial management over quick reactions. There is no time pressure forcing immediate decisions; instead, the challenge comes from avoiding clutter and planning ahead. Each move has consequences, and inefficient placements can quickly lead to a congested board that limits future options. As sessions progress, the tension builds not through speed but through shrinking space, pushing players to think several steps ahead in order to maintain control of the grid. What gives the game a modest layer of progression is its reward system. By achieving certain score thresholds, players unlock additional content, including visual bonuses that reflect the developer’s particular design sensibilities. This system provides a sense of purpose beyond simply beating one’s high score, though it can feel somewhat disconnected from the puzzle mechanics themselves. For some, these unlockables serve as a light incentive to keep playing, while others may find them extraneous or stylistically mismatched with the otherwise abstract gameplay. Visually, ROMBY keeps things straightforward and readable. The interface is uncluttered, and the color-coded pieces are easy to distinguish, which is crucial for a game that relies on quick pattern recognition and forward planning. There’s no attempt at elaborate visual storytelling or thematic depth, but the simplicity works in its favor, ensuring that nothing distracts from the puzzle-solving process. The audio design follows a similar philosophy, offering a light, unobtrusive soundtrack that complements the relaxed pacing without drawing too much attention to itself. Where the game begins to falter is in its long-term variety. While each session presents a slightly different arrangement of pieces, the underlying mechanics remain unchanged throughout. There are no significant twists, evolving rules, or new systems introduced to keep the experience feeling fresh over extended play. As a result, the game can start to feel repetitive once players have mastered its basic strategies. It excels as a short-session pastime—something to dip into for a few minutes at a time—but struggles to maintain engagement during longer stretches. Despite these limitations, ROMBY succeeds in delivering exactly what it sets out to be: a low-commitment puzzle game that rewards careful thinking and incremental improvement. It doesn’t aim to redefine the genre or offer a deeply immersive experience, but it provides a clean and functional take on familiar mechanics. Players who enjoy methodical, score-driven challenges will likely find some satisfaction in optimizing their approach and pushing for better results, while those seeking innovation or narrative depth may find it lacking. In the end, ROMBY is best appreciated as a small, focused project that embraces its simplicity. It offers a brief but engaging loop built on planning and efficiency, supported by a minimalist presentation that keeps the focus on gameplay. However, its limited scope and lack of evolving content prevent it from standing out in a crowded genre. It’s a pleasant diversion for puzzle enthusiasts, but not one that leaves a lasting impression. Rating: 6/10
