A roguelike twist on Breakout, just like you remember with a thick coat of 80s slathered on top. It's fast, it's juicy, it's vapourwave, it's small, it's Roguebreaker! How many bricks will you break in this arcade game?

About
Growing up, I spent most of my summers indoors playing video games, trying to beat that one final level, trying to get just a bit better and beat my own high score. Roguebreaker is my love letter to that time of my life, when you could just lose yourself in a colorful world for a little bit. Beat a level, unlock a new upgrade, and repeat. It's a small, simple game designed to be played in a short sitting, just long enough to zone out and have a good time for a few minutes and relax. I hope you're able to feel a little bit of that as you play. If not, I'd be happy to hear why and what I could do to make it that much better for you.
Thanks so much for giving it a shot!

Break enough bricks and you make a choice between two upgrades. Beat 10 levels and you've got a totally different set of upgrades compared than the last run.
Each level is randomly chosen from a preset pool, so you have a general understanding of what's next, but you can't be sure.
The higher your score, the faster the ball. The more balls you get the more fun you have. It's simple.
Restarting a run means totally different handcrafted levels and a unique set of choices to make.

Break bricks like nobody's business. Hearty bricks, moving bricks, pickup bricks, innocent bricks, it's got bricks for days.
It's got all the pickups you can imagine. Multiballs, extra speed, extra score, extra style, extra fun. Too much fun though and things get hard, be careful.
After you beat a level, you choose an upgrade, go slowmo, suck the ball back to the paddle, fire missiles, tilt the board and bounce the ball, it's great. If you game over though, you start from scratch.
The more you play, the more you unlock, the more you understand, the better you play.
After mastering all 20+ of my handcrafted levels you can start adding your own. Just create a map and drag it into the custom maps folder and you're good to go.

Had an issue with slowdown effect, but after speaking to dev, they added an option to remove it. Now the game is perfect. fast, and reminds me of growing up playing these type of games. def a must buy for lovers of brick breakers.
Roguebreaker is a neat concept that just isn't fully realized. The upgrades are limited, boring, and just don't change how you play the game in a meaningful way. The power curve is also too slow. Even after spending a reasonable amount of time progressing a run, you only have minor increases in power, paddle size, ball speed etc. Once you experience the first 5-10 minutes of this game, you've experienced everything there is. I was hoping for a meta progression to help build power or playstyle upgrades over multiple sessions. I would also hope for upgrades that actually changes how you play and create interesting strategies and combos. Give the player more micro and macro decisions to make and work on adding variety to the core gameplay loop. The engine and presentation are solid, Roguebreakers just needs a lot more thought and work put into its gameplay and progression. Overall dissapointing.
Great game trying to break the bricks and getting to the next level! Addictive :)
I saw this on r/steamdeals, and decided to give it a try. It's a pretty good game. It looks very pretty, though most of my favourite colours are just different forms of pink, purple, and blue, so I may be biased. It plays like Breakout. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a slight spin on the game you already (hopefully) know. The main difference is that this has upgrades that you can get after each level. They aren't anything too interesting or game-changing, but they're nice to have. You can start with an extra ball, have a bigger paddle, get more points in exchange for having a speedier ball, etc. I just sort of wish the game went past the typical 8 rounds, even if it would mean repeating stages. Speaking of, there's a stage maker. It works, and is simple enough for almost anybody to pick up and use (though I still don't know what the "R" things do). It sounds good. The music may get tiring after a while, though. Overall, it's (as of writing this) on sale for 99 cents, so it's a no-brainer. Miscellaneous (probably spelled that wrong) Note: From what I've seen, the creator seems to be a pretty genuine and good person. so that only helps my recommendation.
This review was not sponsored by, or paid for by, any entity or being in all of creation. There was a free key given to me, simply because they wanted exposure. so. here it is. RogueBreaker is a hellishly fun game that aesthetically takes you back to the NES days of Arkanoid (if you remember that). Its music is absolutely immersive and brutal, but also light hearted. Its gameplay is friendly to start off with, but it gets harder...and harder... and harder... AND HARDER until it goes absolutely APE!@#$ insane!. It sounds good, it looks good, it plays GREAT, and for 3.99? it is worth your damned money. GET IT NOW! My only gripe is that (and this only detracts .5 off the main score, because i believe it can be patched, so it is a LIGHT .5 removal) the game has this little quirk where if you are in WINDOWED MODE, and you move your mouse out of the screen bounds (it happens more than you think thanks to instincts), your mouse is not captured, and your paddles cease to work and function, until your mouse is returned back into the window. This is something that can be easily patched, and when it is, i will be removing the .5 detraction. EDIT: Side note: The developer, as seen below this review, has responded to this review, and has personally worked with me to solve the mouse issue as explained above. as of writing the mouse issue fix is currently in the BETA opt-in (which everyone can get if they know how to get to the PROPERTIES of their game via steam), but will most likely make it to the actual release. The speed and professionalism from this developer, and the prompt fix they have made for such a bug, makes me change my original review of 9.5, and not only giving them a solid 10/10 now, but also giving them an extra point. Seriously, more developers need to be like this! FINAL SCORE 11/10 -- JAN BAND BAD ASS AWARD! (Re-visited score)
Got this game because it was cheap and looked fun. Beat it in about 15 mins. Still had fun so I am going back for more. Got it for 3.50 and it is totally worth it. The biggest drawback I've run into is the mouse pointer isn't locked into the window on fullscreen. So sometimes when you are playing you may not realize your pointer is outside the window and your paddles stop moving. Other things I would like to see: More in level power-ups (such as guns on the end of a paddle that lets me shoot at bricks), more levels, and the ability to keep going after 10 levels. I do understand that this game is $4 and it is worth it for that price already so anything after the current iteration would just be a plus. In short: Get this game - it is fun, cheap, and a great way to lose 15 mins playing a game. Edit: I've come back and played some more after a year or so, and the mouse lock problem I was having has been fixed. I SHOULD have pointed out in my original that my monitor set up is one above the other, which could have been the issue. I still stand by what I said prior: Get this game, it's cheap, fun, and even if you only play for 1 hour before deciding you're done you'd still get your money's worth.
It has been a pleasure working with Josh Bergasse to playtest Roguebreaker and watch it develop from the earlier builds. The game has come a long way, and I honestly believe that Josh has created a product worthy of your time and attention. Roguebreaker is a passion project that Josh wanted to see come to fruition long before coding even began. The concept of an 80s themed arcade game with modern conveniences and features (level editor, workshop support, incredible powerups, etc.) was one that he knew would be a perfect blend, and he was right. The game is one that I've sunk over 20 hours into so far and I'm still not tired of it. It's fantastic at what it does, and is capable as both a standalone experience or a game to play while you're in queue for another game (League, DotA, etc.) or in tandem with a slower one (Runescape, etc.) One thing that I assure you'll love about Roguebreaker is the sheer passion that Josh has in his game. If you discover any issues or have suggestions, he's completely willing to take feedback or talk with you about your ideas. The game is still actively evolving and I look forward to the bright future that Roguebreaker has.
【So aesthetic】
Fun and addictive. Music and visuals are appealing. Bit laggy when there are many multiple balls in play.
The game has a great art style and the controls are smooth as butter. Something you definitely need for a brick-breaker. There are plenty of power-ups and it also includes Steam Workshop for additional player-made levels. And the music is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good too.
