Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/Ivx-GACkYWA This game has a great tag line on Meta Quest stand-alone, "Save the World with Finger Guns!" Why it's also on the Steam PCVR version, I have no idea. You're really stretching finger guns to mean using motion controllers to hold a gun that makes it look like it may be finger guns sometimes. On the Quest, you're using hand-tracking so they literally are finger guns. It's a cool premise. You use hand gestures in order to move the character or turn or use special abilities (such as the shield). It works to make it feel physical, while still being an arcade shooter rogue-lite. On PCVR, the Steam version, that only partially applies. In fact, translating those hand-tracked movements to controller means there's a lot lost in translation. It feels like you're playing an out-dated 2016 room-scale game with Vive wands that didn't have a joystick. It just feels clunky now in 2024 PCVR. Yet the game has a certain charm to it. It's budget-priced and at this bargain price, you'll not really find many rogue-lites that have this kind of zaniness to them. You have a huge variety of weapons, abilities, & gameplay elements (math puzzles anyone?) that all come together to really make this game feel like a sci-fi drug-induced fever dream adventure. The neon colors may bleed out your eyeballs though. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 80-90 fps. You have nodal teleportation set up like those old school grid-based dungeon crawlers. You have snap turning as well. You can play comfortably seated, but with the hand gestures, you may want to play standing so they get correctly inputed. The gestures didn't always work for opening doors though so that was a bit frustraing. Rate 6/10. I bought the Quest version with my own money. I got the Steam version for free.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Game seems very fun and unique it has some good potential to be one of the biggest vr games, also vrcentral recommended this to me
The dev added hand tracking for Quest Steam Link, and that's great because I prefer to have my games on Steam. Hand tracking really makes the game shine, moving nodes by sticking your hand out and sliding around feels cool. All the gestures are well thought-out and reloading causing the gun to spin is a fun touch. I just made it to the first suspend point so I'll probably have more to say when I'm further in, but this game is under-reviewed as-is so I thought I'd let people know it's worth the price tag. There's also a number of characters and a crafting system, great soundtrack and visuals.
I did not know what kind of game i was going to get myself into. But after getting it on. i found this game to be very fun and rewarding. For a game released in the 2020s i appreciate the effort that went into the game on release. I hope this game gets the love it deserves down the road. - Rog Ally Gaming Curator
Works on Reverb G2. Disclaimer: I've received this game for free via Curator Connect. Rogue Ascent VR might have been an ok game on Quest, but without hand tracking it is clunky and weird in a bad way. Node teleportation movement on a square grid feels severely outdated, like you are playing Might & Magic. Gunplay is basic, weapon alignment makes no sense with motion controllers, and every projectile fired has forced magnet to enemies. AI is almost blind and does not use cover or any tactics. Visuals look surprisingly good and sharp, but GUI and environments are ridiculously clattered for a low poly game.
Very odd and hard to pick up. Still it's well made, just not my style.
cant get past the first menu Edit: Instant Developer response <3
really good high quality game, 10/10 would recommend
I was stuck in the first area for 20 minutes 2 times game didnt proceed forward,
