I remember when Rocket League was first launched. I hadn't played the original game, "Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars" (or heard of it), but seeing a game launch on PS Plus as a heady mix of football, cars and neon lights grabbed my attention. Since then, I've suffered a mild addiction to 2vs2 ranked matches, which I'd like to break free of but know I won't. Other modes are available beyond 2v2 ranked, I'm assured of this and can see it in the menu system, but I assume they're reserved for people even more disturbed than me. I'd like to be clear, this is a very fun game. 5 minute matches are the perfect length, especially for those in households where shouts of "5 minutes!" is accepted currency for pushing back household chores or parental responsibility. The general gameplay loop is largely perfect. It absolutely should be and is this fun to chase a giant ball around in a car, launching in to the air to prevent a last minute equaliser on the line. There's also an extremely high skill ceiling of which I'm still very, very, very far from hitting which captures that "just one more" feeling. You know, the kind of feeling that is generally produced by ingesting illicit substances. Spend anytime watching clips on YouTube, or maybe go beyond the rank that you're accustomed to, and you'll soon realise that you're not very good, and you'll probably never amount to anything, but that's ok. If at first you don't realise you're not very good and probably never amount to anything, then your team mates will alert you to this at the earliest opportunity. It's a shame Epic are too insecure to let Steam list this game anymore, as a result I'm not sure I'm writing this review for anyone but the community. And to that community I say this: Thank you for being there with me for 5 minutes at a time. Thank you for telling me I'm terrible. Thank you for telling me how well you know my mum. Thank you for letting me know that I should uninstall - I should. I really, really should.
