I get that it's Early Access, but this plays like a proof of concept. It's not anywhere near ready for any kind of release, wait a year and see if there's been major progress made or not before buying.
ROAL

The game has a good foundation and it immediately shows the potential. You can already have hours of fun playing in EA, even if the grind is very hard at the beginning. Of course you notice that everything still needs to be built on, but that's normal in EA. The amount of blood is fine for me. Each gladiator type has different actions and its own kill animation. It's easy to play with the controller during combat. The mouse is better in the menus because the controller doesn't work everywhere yet. I will describe the content in more detaill.

Market

GLADIATORS => You can buy gladiators on the market. The offers rotate every 24 hours in real time but you have the option to pay for a restock.
BASIC => There are basic weapons and armor that are always available. It will show you which type can use it. This is the first thing to go after the training equipment.
WEAPONS => You can get some better equipment here. More specifically, weapons and shields. The offers rotate every 6 hours in real time and there is no option for restock.
ARMOR => You can get some better equipment here. More specifically, helmets and armor for the body. The offers rotate every 6 hours in real time and there is no option for restock.
SPECIAL => This is similar to the equipment from the movie Gladiator. It is very, very expensive and whoever achieves it has the best advantages in the bonus.
LEGENDARY => There are equipment on the market ranging from normal to legendary. You can see this in the colors like blue, green and so on... and the price ;-)

Barracks

Here you have an overview of the gladiators. These are currently the skill values, the level, the equipment and what the gladiator looks like.
In this menu you can change the equipment and see the individual components. There's nothing more to say.

Ludus

Here you can only choose between a Medicus and a Doctore.
The medicus heals your gladiators. This happens in real time but it doesn't take long. A few seconds to minutes depending on hp and lvl.
The Doctore will train your gladiator safely in the Ludus. This also happens in real time. This can be done passively and the Gladiator will not be available during this time.
The training takes longer and depends on the experience you have already achieved for the next level. It can last from several minutes to over hours depending on xp and lvl.

Fight

Here you can choose between practise, solo and unranked.
PRACTISE => Practice offers three options. Turorial, 1vs1 and FFAvs4.
SOLO => Solo offers five options with different rewards, difficulty levels and arenas. 1vs1 (easy), multiple opponents (moderate + one by one), 1vs4 (moderate), allvsRhino (hard), Primus survive (hard, 14 opponents, last survivor wins). The time limit is always 10 minutes and you can always decide between life and death.
UNRANKED => Unranked offers two Online-PVP options. 1vs1 and FFA 3-5 opponents. The time limit is always 10 minutes and there is permadeath. You can always decide between life and death. Once killed, the gladiator is lost.

Thumbs up

The game has limited content but it's ok for the EA release and the potential is definitely there for a great future. Very nice EA start for an acceptable price. Keep up the good work!!!
https://steamdb.info/app/2678300/charts/
Early Access baaaaaby! Aight, who you gonna trust, the guy w/ 0.4 hrs (that's less than a half hour, for you math nerds) on record or 13.8 ? tl;dr: I listened to my fav audio book and started grinding this. The hardest part was getting through the early levels where your gladiators have ♥♥♥♥ all for stats. It's hard not being god mode. I think once I hit level 15ish things started to move a little faster and that was when I got in a good rhythm. I am scared to take my gladiator into the 1v1s. I will support the ♥♥♥♥ out of a 1-3 person studio's early access game instead of buying another skin from COD that I won't be able to use the next time they release their "AAA" game that brings activision blizzard 20 gazillion dollars. Pros ---- * Unique combat game. It's not mortal kombat, it's not an open world action RPG. It's a gladiator arena. Sometimes it's 1v1, sometimes it's 1v3, sometimes it's 1v5. Sometimes it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1. I dunno how to add. * Gladiator progression. Take a class you like, play it and get good with it. Oh your character is a noob? Surprrise surprise, you're level 1. You won't be running and doing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ front flips over people until you level up. * Not instant gratification -- this one i land somewhere in the middle. I'm so trained to just gimme gimme gimme game. Sometimes you need your gladiator to heal. Holy hell that's different. What do I do while my gladiator heals? Well, I go buy another gladiator (either same class, so I can share weapons, items.. or a diff class to learn). * Potential -- from everything i've read, this is a small developer (1-3 people ??) and they did this on a very small budget. It looks like there is a ton of potential. I would really love to see it get support so we can get additional things from their roadmap. Cons ----- * Barrier of entry to fun --> It can seem *really* stiff at level 1. That's a hard mental thing to get past. I think the majority of games dropset everyone at equal. So we're used to being max power the second we jump into a game. This game is not like that. So, yeah -- your guy is gonna suck, straight up. You will suck. Rex Smashington will suck. it's not easy early. * Navigating --> It took me like, a good hour before I started cruising through the menus. Between buying gladiators, buying armor, buying weapons, putting your gladiators in the medicus to heal.. or was it doctore? I don't know the difference between those words. * lol bald people --> it took me a bit then I found the experimental settings to add hair to the characters. lolol.
This game is obviously heavily influenced by the show Spartacus which imo is a good thing. I have always wanted a gladiator game like this. Now its early access and it shows. Some of the animations feel a bit wacky and some of the UI feels a bit clunky. However the events feel straight out of the show and the battles can feel epic and glorious. With polish I can see a lot of potential here so I hope the devs keep at it.
So far this is a pretty fun early access title that shows a lot of promise. I was a bit underwhelmed within the first 30 minutes as the mechanics are a bit confusing, but I'm sincerely glad I stuck with the game. As of right now, there are four different classes with distinct fighting styles all with their own strengths and weaknesses. Murmillo - sword and board tank with a ton of endurance, but low mobility. Thrax - a more balanced sword and board fighter that mixes offensive and defensive capabilities. Some word that starts with D - dual wielder that sacrifices armor in favor of speed and a berserker combat style. Ventiles - a skirmisher with a javelin with fast, sweeping attacks that can hurl three missiles a match, but runs out of stamina faster than the other classes. There are multiple game types to test out in single player that are all fairly challenging, outside of the 1v1 combat of course. The permadeath feature only seems to be active in multiplayer fighters so you don't have to worry about losing on of your fighters to the uber bots that spawn en masse against you on some of the fighters. Also, the rhino will wreck you. All said and done, if you go to bed dreaming about running your own ludus and wished there were more gladiator games, you owe it to yourself to pick up ROAL.
There is a lot of potential in this game! I know it's an early release, but I'm having fun taking heads off left and right! I really wanna see where this can go in terms of customization, managing the Ludus and your gladiators, igniting the crowd, more classes, more arenas, etc. (It kinda makes me want to re-watch the Spartacus series again, TBH.) The stamina bar is limited, so you can't just hack and slash your way to victory. I over extended a few times in 1v1 fights and paid for it by getting my head cut off. It's nice to see a fighting game that relies on skill over button-mashing. EDIT: after getting some more playtime with this, I've found myself enjoying it even more. I've been maining Velites in the Munera, and I've been able to clear at least 10 total opponents before having to heal up. Murmillo is also a lot of fun, but requires a different timing. Armor makes a big difference as well, so get what you can. I'd love to see more people playing vs other people!
gameplay is too basic , boring tbh , there's no gore or whatsoever from what i played only the executions , the game feels so arcade-like in a bad way , controller isn't so supported works good in the fights but in the menus there's some problems, there's no direction attacks only spam heavy and light for 3 times and back dodge regain stamina and repeat , crowd doesn't interact with u from what i have seen, and the fight cards are the same always, graphics decent, my biggest problem with this game is the gameplay its sooo sooo basic skillcap is low u can't experiment enough in short pros: -graphics for an early access its decent -atmosphere -weapons and armor design cons: -Gameplay is too basic and limited, boring -lack of gore and blood.. cmon its a GLADIATOR GAME -repetitive combat and concept -crowd doesn't interact with you doesn't throw anything -fighting cards doesn't change (from what i played) -needs a lot of polishing and a totally new combat system -didn't pull me to play more, lost my interest quite quickly, duo to the combat and the grindy start didn't give me that adrenaline to keep me interested (this is for the dev) its still an early access but the base of the game and the combat specially is weak i doubt it would standout, i wish the you work more and poilish the game and i truly wish you a great success, a gameplay like warband is better for these types of games , a parry system, relationships, conditions like spoils to the victor a crowd throwing in some weapons, critical hits like hitting the head etc.. a freedom with the combat to experiment not just a stam game and hit regain hit gets boring
really cool concept. looking forward to see where they take this
First time ever leaving a review on a game in my life. I grew up a huge gladiator fan, Spartacus series ignited that even more, this game certainly itches that scratch. It has a great solid foundation that can turn into something great and the game dev is very active in the discord and takes all comments and feedback seriously. Considering I believe this was made by one person, it shows they have quite a bit of promise moving forward. definitely worth the money for some gladiatorial fun
I do not understand how this game has a positive rating. Waste of money.
