I can't in good faith recommend this game. The art looks fine and that was what attracted me. But the combat is so clunky. You get a good amount of damage both from enemies and traps, and thats fine. But for some reason you can't stack healing items, not even buy multiple of then. This make the first boss really tedious, with him spawing bats that sometimes overlaps with their attacks, so you can't dodge it. Yeah, I didn't finish the game but I don't think I'll finish it. Not once I had fun with the combat, it is very stiff. You spend way too much time in combat to be this clunky
Here's what you do:
Upfront, I played four levels and couldn't get past the first boss after that. I will explain why I don't want to continue playing and you can comment if there is anything in this review that is not clearly explained. This is a 2D action platformer with a light city building element. You go through a set order of levels to collect loot to spend at your town which will increase your town's level. Just buying better equipment and healing items will add to the tax collected by the mayor and thus increase your town level, so upgrading the town is basically done automatically. Your abilities in levels are simply an attack and an invincible dash that has a short recharge time on it so it cannot be spammed. You are not fully healed after beating a level, but there is a free heal spot in town that will heal more hit points as the town levels up. Otherwise you need to buy healing items to recover HP.
What I like:
There are some difficult jumps and I did have to use my invincible dash in mid-air to pas through some harmful brambles to reach a treasure, that was a good use of the ability. There are other secret rooms with more treasure that are telegraphed by having no border on the wall where you can pass through. If you die in a level, you return to the start of the level, but you keep all the treasure you bought so you can theoretically buy more helpful items for your next run (if you can at least beat the level with what you have because you restart the level, you don't go back to town).
What I don't like:
The level design is a little maze-like without a clear direction as to which way the exit is. The combat is stiff. You have to attack once, then either dash past the monster or back away so they can do their attack. They will have no hit stun from a second attack if you mash. I like not allowing attack mashing, but removing enemy hit stun is a cheap way to do it. After buying items in the shops in town, the town was at level 5 out of 5 after three levels. I don't know if something happens that raises the cap on this, but the mayor seemed pretty sure the town had reached its peak. I stopped on the first boss because of multiple poor designs. First, there are vines across the top of the room that force you to grab them when moving close to them. I assume these vines are here to avoid the boss's attacks that cover the entire floor, but I can just double-jump over them or dash. Bats then spawn in at the top of the screen so grabbing the vines gets you stuck and hit in a way that means you never want to grab those vines, which means I never want to jump too high over the boss's attacks or I'll get hit by bats. When you die on the boss, you don't restart with full HP. Instead you start with the default max HP, so upgrading your HP through equipment feels unrewarding. The boss will kill you in three hits anyway, if you don't get hit by bats. It was too frustrating and so I thought I'd better spend my time on a more refined game.
Conclusion:
I think this game needs a lot more refinement to be worth spending your money on it. Unfortunately, I bought this game a long time ago and didn't play it until recently so I doubt I can refund it. I hope I bought it on discount at least. I don't feel too burned because I don't remember what I paid for it. Let this be a lesson to all to not go buying of games unless you are going to try them out right away (or at least within two weeks).
This game is a level-based, hack-n-slash platformer with a simple equipment system. You enter a level via portal, clear it, trade in town, repeat. If you die, you start from the beginning of the level, but you retain any treasure collected and lose any consumables used. Every few turns (check with the guard captain) you'll be forced to defend the town. Immediately after exiting a dungeon level, the battle will start. You have whatever items you have left after the level, and that's it. There is a town upgrade system, but keeping it maxed doesn't seem troublesome. The town only downgrades if you fail to defend the town or shop at the black market. Luckily, money is plentiful, which negates the only real reason to use the black market. I like the art style, and several of the NPCs have fun designs. As far as I've played, everything stands out well from its surroundings, and (once you know what to look for) you won't even be getting surprised by traps. The story is straightforward: evil lord, kidnapped friend, save the town.
Recomendo.

Rift Adventure is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of video games everywhere. This one is a furry friendly brawler with light RPG-like elements and level based/story progression as you control furries through various levels behind portals. There's nothing significantly compelling or interesting here that any of the other thousand or so 2D retro pixel platformers has to offer. It's not an asset flip, it's just not very good at all. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Because this is a console game, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. Rift Adventure has the laughably optimistic price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Rift Adventure is a lovely little platformer game, not overly difficult, not overly easy, not too long, not too short, just right. The retro pixelart is beautiful, it's really well done. Soundtrack is also great, matches the game theme perfectly. The city tax/improvement mechanism is unique and may cause you to adapt your strategy throughout the game. So, if you like platformers and/or pixelart games, I say you should definetely give this one a try.
It's hot garbage. Try again.
