Emily Hanson

Riddles of the Past, developed by MysteryTag and Far Mills and published by RunServer, is a hidden-object adventure that takes a familiar formula and dresses it in a mysterious, post-apocalyptic setting. The story centers on Emily Hanson, a young woman who wakes up with no memory of her past. Her only certainty is her name, and from there she sets out on a journey to uncover the truth about her identity and the strange, abandoned world around her. The narrative leans heavily on themes of amnesia and discovery, guiding players through a series of locations where remnants of the past linger in silence. As Emily explores deeper, the puzzle pieces of her forgotten life and the broader mystery of the desolate environment begin to come together, giving the game its central drive. Atmosphere is one of the strongest elements in Riddles of the Past. The visual presentation emphasizes decay and emptiness, with over fifty locations to explore. The abandoned buildings, wrecked machines, and hauntingly quiet spaces are crafted to immerse players in the sense of isolation and secrecy. Each scene serves as both a backdrop and a gameplay space, with details scattered about for the player to interact with. The somber art direction and subdued palette create a melancholic mood that pairs well with the protagonist’s sense of loss and confusion. While not visually groundbreaking, the consistency of the world helps maintain the tone throughout the journey. Gameplay follows the hidden-object and point-and-click tradition, tasking players with searching for key items, combining them, and using them to solve puzzles. Spotting subtle details becomes essential, and players must often pay close attention to the environment to progress. The game offers two difficulty levels, which makes it approachable to newcomers while still providing a bit of challenge for those more experienced with the genre. For players who become stuck, the option to skip puzzles helps keep the flow from stalling entirely. Spot, Emily’s companion, does not play a role here as in other titles of the genre, but the focus on environmental problem-solving carries the experience. Some puzzles are rewarding and intuitive, though others drift into the territory of trial and error, where the connections between clues and solutions feel less natural. Technically, Riddles of the Past is a small-scale project but performs well within its scope. Built on Unity, it has very modest system requirements and runs smoothly even on older machines, making it widely accessible. The game also supports multiple languages, with both subtitles and voice acting, though the performances can feel uneven. Emily’s lines and those of other characters sometimes lack the emotional weight needed to fully immerse the player, but they get the job done in keeping the story moving. The interface is straightforward, and the interactive map allows players to revisit and connect locations easily, reducing unnecessary backtracking. While the game is engaging in its strongest moments, its pacing can sometimes falter. The mystery builds slowly, and certain sections rely too heavily on wandering and scanning for objects rather than advancing the plot. For some, this deliberate pace will enhance the tension and the atmosphere of being lost in a forgotten place, but for others it may come across as padding. Coupled with the occasional “moon logic” puzzle, there are points where progression feels less like discovery and more like guesswork. Riddles of the Past is a relatively short experience, often completed in a couple of hours, depending on how much time a player spends solving puzzles without assistance. Its brevity may disappoint those expecting a larger, more elaborate adventure, but the compact length also ensures that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. On Steam, it has earned a “Mostly Positive” reception, with players praising its mood and setting while pointing out the uneven puzzle design and limited replay value. The inclusion of achievements adds some incentive for completionists, but most players will find the main playthrough sufficient. Ultimately, Riddles of the Past succeeds as a small but atmospheric hidden-object mystery. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, nor does it deliver a deeply layered narrative, but it provides an engaging and sometimes haunting journey that draws strength from its art direction and the intrigue of uncovering a forgotten life. For fans of hidden-object adventures who enjoy moody environments and light puzzle-solving, it offers a compact and satisfying experience. For those seeking length, challenge, or complex storytelling, it may feel too slight, but within its modest scope, it delivers a memorable glimpse into a world filled with silence and secrets. Rating: 7/10
Well done 7.4
Playtime: 2-4 hrs Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Riddles Of The Past is point & click, "hidden object", mystery puzzle game from the publisher who made Hope Lake. I explain the apostrophes later in this review. I gave negative review for the Hope Lake and this game wasn't too far from getting it too, but i'd say this is better than the one mentioned before since Hope lake had actual bugs and all. This game has flaws and some things that i didn't like, but i'd say they are mostly personal preferences therefore i give this an thumbs up. Plot summary - It begins with Emily (You as a player), who have had amnesia for multiple years is starting to find some bits and pieces from their past. They travel to a abandoned post apocalyptic looking town which resembles like american road side village with iconic diners in the 60's. Town is called Riverside and it's taken over by robots. You meet some familiar faces from your past who help you reveal more what has happened to you. It's hard to tell any more specific without spoiling the whole game. I wouldn't say the plot is anything spectacular, it's kinda boring and used already if you ask me. Basic popular kid and nerd fighting for the same girl and if i can say it's kinda like 'teenager high school drama' type of a plot. It wasn't completely terrible tho, just not interesting, wouldn't recommend this game for the plot. What comes to the game play and mechanics. Really big negative thing about this game is that they say it is a HO game and to certain level it is, but also it isn't typical one. There's no HO scenes at all and by that i mean like the ones where you have pile of trash for example and you need to find 10 mentioned items from there by name, shape or something else. This game when said hidden object, means you have to find items around the map and connect them to proceed in the game. Not actual hidden object scenes, which was a bummer. I usually just categorize games like that to more point & click genre (Like Deponia, Monkey island etc.) than HO's like Artifex Mundi games, but i do understand why they can say their game is also HO. So kinda my own fault i didn't make sure what type of a game i bought. Otherwise the game play at least for me was decent, it's pretty straightforward and not too hard. Sometimes i noticed that it was hard to find some objects, because they blend to the background due to the graphics being little bit low quality and items same color as the background, but i don't think i had to use google not even once. There was no steam achievements to get, that was kinda let down since i like to collect complete games to my profile. I have started to notice this pattern in older games and also games that are published by some small publisher. Sometimes it seems like the game is made originally for another device like mobile and just posted without thinking too much to steam. Even tho i said earlier the items blending to the background sometimes, i liked the artwork and ambient music. I didn't find the music or sounds too repetitive, at least not that much that i would have noticed anything like that. There was voice acting, which wasn't terrible, but would say that wasn't the best. So kinda have mixed feelings about that, but i'd say voice acting in these types of games probably doesn't have huge budget or anything so it's kinda predictable that they also don't sound that high quality. Price isn't crazy high for this genres games, but still when it only took me a couple hours to play i wouldn't pay 6,99 EUR (7,61 USD) for a game like this. I bought it from sale so i think it might come to sale sometime again. Plot and game wise it wasn't that scary or didn't have anything crazy spooky or gore content nor it wasn't that hard to play, i would recommend this to all ages except for really young kids and that is only because there is robots, fighting etc to some extend even if its not blood splattering everywhere. I'd say this is something like 12+ game. Pros • Artwork • Music • Straightforward, not too hard or easy puzzles. • Good amount of mini games Cons • No actual HO scenes • Items sometimes blend in tho the background • Plot was below average Story □ Bad ☑ Could be better □ Decent □ Good □ Enjoyable □ Immersive Artwork □ Bad □ Could be better □ Decent ☑ Pretty good □ Beautiful □ Amazing Soundtrack □ Bad □ Could be better □ Decent ☑ Good □ Immersive □ Eargasm Minigames difficulty □ Toddler could solve □ Easy ☑ Medium □ Advanced □ Hard □ Had to check on google Overal gameplay difficulty □ Toddler could solve □ Easy ☑ Medium □ Advanced □ Hard □ Had to check on google Audience □ Kids ☑ Teens ☑ Young adults ☑ Adults ☑ Seniors
