An elegantly designed arcade game that is devilishly addictive as you try to get progressively higher scores to unlock higher difficulties. The many different interactions that the game facilitates, despite only allowing you to point and click, are a constant barrage of interesting micro-challenges that you have to quickly assess and deal with. It's also very gratifying to learn about small quirks in the behaviour of some enemies, like how the beetles won't charge at you if you keep making small movements, or how intentionally keeping a bee alive will give you a constant supply of stingers to take care of centipedes and beetles easier. There's a lot of risk and reward at play with many of the systems, which lends to constant interesting decision making. This is particularly seen in the core movement ability, where making longer movements (/ longer range attacks) leaves you momentarily vulnerable before your tongue connects with anything. Additionally, the bees stingers are a powerful tool for scoring points, but their presence can lead you into dangerous situations that can be avoided if you deal with the bees quickly. It's a very engaging game, but it has a couple of quirks. Some combinations of enemies can lead to situations that feel impossible to get out of, for example when a centipede overlaps with a spider and prevents you from escaping the web. Secondly, the hard difficulty feels relentless. On hard there can be 4 heavy enemies on screen at a time (each having different dangers for you to worry about), but as soon as one is killed another takes its place almost immediately, while also occasionally adding a super heavy into the mix. It's fun to be constantly adapting to a barrage of dangers, but the way that there is no reprieve after tactfully dealing with a complex threat can be exhausting. Overall Ribbit Rampage is an excellent, challenging arcade game that is cleverly designed and compelling to play over and over again.
