I like it to a degree for a simulator. Its very limited, TCG does it way better. You get a second employee at level 20, so thats probably about 15 hours of gameplay, and its a slog. Its incredibly repetitive, either you checkout or you handle returns, while you have your first employee doing the other job. So I cant focus on curating my movies, or designing the store, etc. because Im forced to perform incredibly repetitive tasks for sooo long. I understand if the other employees are locaked behind levels like 5 or 10, but 20?? The features are really limited, you cant set your own price for snacks, movie rentals, movie purchases, etc. There are no stats to display how popular the store is or if adding decorations even does anything. Having the ability to "sell" movies isnt really fleshed out either because you cant control the price, and the "rarity" boxes dont make much sense either; are they in higher demand? I know they cost more if a customer buys them but what about rentals? Theres a black market feature to buy specific movies but it has this janky SKU system where you have to find the movie you want to buy from a shelf, and repeatedly look at the 8 digit random number and type that into the computer to buy it; you cant even reference the catalog of movies you have and buy them that way, you have to go out on the floor and sift through them to find the one you want. Overall for a sim I love the idea of your own blockbuster, and I do see potential, but its not there yet. Its waaaay too much of slog and repetitive work that needs to be done. If you want a sim store go for TCG over this.
It's a good game to turn your brain on auto pilot and then wonder where your whole day went.
Waldo (from Where's Waldo) was my best customer. But then he broke my special edition copy of Xenocat and when I charged him to replace it, he threw Popcorn at me. 10/10
Deeply addictive, nostalgia-fueled management sim that captures the magic of old video rental stores. Shout out and RIP to Movies America, my OG store as a kid.
Overall, I think this game shows a lot of potential, but it doesn't feel quite finished yet. It took me ~20 hours to 100% the game. The last few hours spent saving up for the final room expansion were rough. I am probably going to come back to this in a few months to see how the updates progress, but I can't see myself spending much more time on it in the near future. The main frustration I have with the game in its current state is that your store's income and success quickly peak and level out, with only minimal progress to be made from upgrades earned through level-ups. There is a maximum number of customers who can be in your store at once; there is only one cash register; and it takes about 30 seconds to check out a customer on average. This limits you to around 25–40 customers per day. A customer can only rent/buy up to 4 movies a day, but not every customer will rent all four, which substantially limits your income from movies. Concessions, snacks, arcade games, and toys do slightly increase income, but it can take weeks to break even on the initial investment. There seems to be a hard limit of ~$700–$800 in daily income after expenses. Going back to the limited number of customers per day, this also means that you only ever need to have ~80 movies available to rent or buy on clearance at any given time. Once you hit over ~240 movies (enough to keep the shelves stocked consistently), there is essentially no benefit to buying more movies. If anything, it becomes detrimental to expand further because it will make restocking more difficult and time-consuming. I went into this game expecting to be able to build a giant movie store and eventually make enough money to fully utilize the massive amount of space you can gain from expansions. What I discovered was that the more elaborate my store became, the less efficient and thus less profitable it became. Saving up to buy a single arcade machine required multiple days of income. I felt like I was passively being punished for trying to play the game the way that the game itself was encouraging me to. By hour 10, I had reduced my store to a few shelves of movies and a few of each of the other displays. I ended up buying movies in bulk every day to get the 1,000-movie achievement, putting them on shelves, and putting the shelves into storage so they wouldn't "clutter" the store. The last few hours of the game felt like a joyless slog to grind enough money to buy the last building expansions, which I had no use for, given that the original store size was already enough space. One suggestion I have that I think would improve a lot of these issues would be to simply allow selling movies at 100% market value, rather than just 50% off in the clearance bin. This would be a strong incentive for players to search for rare movies and substantially raise the cap on daily income. Adding a second register would also help, but I realize that would require a lot more work to implement. Also, I realize a majority of users do not use lunix, however I was disappointed that I couldn't for the life of me get the TV to display video correctly. This would have been a lot more enjoyable if could have put on some actual movies in the background. This very well may be user error on my part, but this issue seems to be persistent across lunix users.
Picked this game up during the summer sale, and it quickly became my obsession for the past week. I have completed all 18 achievements so far and would love to see more added to the game in the future.
It’s just lovely. I didn’t know I’d enjoy store simulation games this much before playing Retro Rewind. I absolutely love the nostalgia. I really appreciate that there is always something to do and that (so far) it didn't turn into one of those games where you eventually just stand around idling. I wish this would have co-op mode - would love to play this with a friend. Really hoping for more content in the future.
