saw this game mentioned in a thread about "racing games for your potato PC" and had to give it a try. as a longtime fan of Super Sprint back in the arcades, i gelled with it right away. Retro Rally leans harder into the wackiness, though, which can make it very chaotic and fun. there are all kinds of crazy level hazards to navigate in each course, ranging from giant snowballs and swinging gates to roller coasters and tornadoes. this game uses a proper physics engine, too, which means you can be spun, flipped, and thrown out of the course with brutal force! this kind of chaotic wackiness suits an arcade-style game like this; races are short and CPU opponents often fall victim to the hazards too, so getting thrown off track by a tornado isn't as frustrating as it could be otherwise. if you're interested in Super Sprint/Super Off-Road and/or looking for some light arcade fun that's easy to pick up and play, Retro Rally is very affordable and very charming. i'm impressed by the creativity on display here and can't help but laugh every time someone gets launched off course by a train. Retro Rally 2 when????
I played a couple hours offline and this scratches the 'Ivan Super Offroad' itch. Handles the same, has fun obstacles with 16 tracks, 32 if you count nightime/reversal tracks. Races are fair and balanced, no cheesing for the ai, they crash too. Had plenty of nail biting photo finishes already, won some lost some. It also works w/ my x-box type controller. Highly recommended.
Cool tracks and great driving, but only one car and no campaign mode. This is a pure arcade race game, so all you need is throttle and steering. There is a brake button, but you rarely use it because your car drifts through turns so effortlessly. Sometimes you just have to let go of the throttle. Modes are pretty much standard. There’s the time trial with single races, circuit where you drive four races and the one with the most points at the end wins, and a unique gauntlet. Circuit takes place through 4 tournaments, each with four tracks. The tracks are really cool for a game like this, with jumps, ramps, and road obstacles like coconuts dropping from trees and snowballs tumbling down the hill. Each takes place in a unique setting. Although tracks are simple, a few assets around them add character. When you finish first in a tournament, you will be able to play a reverse tournament on significantly darker tracks. The gauntlet is an interesting mode. You drive tracks in normal order or random, and the goal is to keep winning. It’s game over if you don’t win. But it adds a few elements to make things interesting. The most important is money that spawns on the track. When you win, you can use money to upgrade speed and handling. It doesn’t make much difference, but it adds some fun. One critique is that there is only one car. It's the same for you and your opponents; the only difference is color. The other issue is an extremely delayed respawn when you drive off the course or get stuck. You need to hold a few seconds to activate respawn and then wait a few more to actually get back on track. One situation like this can already ruin your chances of winning.
Pretty fun game, nice obstacles and jumps with different tracks.
Fun little game to pop in and play for 15-20 minutes at a time to unwind. Reminds me so much of playing with Micro Machines and Super Off Road on SNES. Great music too!
Great game! If you played Super Offroad as a kid, this will bring the nostalgia right back. Not a ton of tracks, but for the price you can't be upset. Highly recommend for a quick time killer game!
This game was everything that I was hoping for with a retro game. It was easy to drive, responsive, and there was actual skill to win. For what it is, 10/10.
