Basic Information
Title: Rest House Status: Early Access Developer: studio Don Quixote Publisher: Minotaur production & studio Don Quixote Genre: 3D Bad Joke Release Date: 9th of February 2017 Type: Singleplayer
General Impression
I really wanted to enjoy Rest House. I requested a review copy for it, simply because I can never write enough about abstract games on Steam. Rest House from its Store Page description and official screenshots looked most promising. Oh, Chris...you never learn, do you? Apparently not. I had a most unpleasant surprise, to say the least, once I booted the game for the first time and noticed that it crashed almost instantly. Not a good sign, but I was still willing to offer this game’s debutante developer a chance to redeem his game in my eyes. I was willing indeed but even goodwill has its limits. In the approximately 13 minutes of excruciating play time, I had over 30 CTDs (crashes to desktop) in seemingly random places throughout the game’s few levels, if they can even be called so. You see, most abstract games I played on Steam until now, at least had some form of introduction, sometimes even an explanation and clear set of objectives. Rest House features absolutely no context that might make sense. From the title’s simplistic Main Menu (which by the way, also doesn’t have any resolution or control rebind options) you can choose to start any of its 5 nonsensical levels that bear no resemblance to any gaming genre I played until now and also don’t appear to be connected even between themselves. So what do you do or accomplish in this game? I have yet to find an answer to this question. And it’s a pity too. Unreal Engine 4 offers a high quality set of assets which in skilled hands, can certainly provide for a fun gaming experience. I’ll let you guess if studio Don Quixote qualifies as skilled or not. At least they could have attempted a re-imagining of the adventures undertaken by that nutty hidalgo, if they bare his name. “The history of the valorous and wittie Knight-Errant Don-Quixote of the Mancha” is a most coherent work of fiction compared to Rest House. I won’t deny the game looks decent, but in its current state, it is far from enjoyable, let alone playable. And while I shall not boast my system specs here (you can always find a link with them, on my Steam profile), rest assured that I have played maxed out, games that were considerably more pretentious than the one I’m previewing now. It goes without saying that the many CTDs I had to endure, are not caused any potential hardware incompatibilities. I simply wished to play this game for a decent amount of time, but its instability, made it a chore even to gather the necessary screenshots I usually like to collect from any game I play on Steam. Never met before a game with so many crashes in such a limited time frame. I cannot stress enough how atrocious this Early Access title really is. It lacks, polish, aim, storyline and even the required stability in order to at least explore those barren corridors it features. If most abstract games encourage thinking outside the box, Rest House sets that box on fire and then takes a leak over its ashes. I don’t recommend you purchase it at all, but if you’re an Achievement hunter, you may at least wish to grab this title when bundled or under a heavy discount. I for one, advise any potential players to steer clear from it.
Strong Points
+ Unreal Engine 4 assets. + Steam Achievements (which you will never obtain).
Weak Points
- Crash after crash after another crash to desktop. - Calling it “nonsensical” would be an understatement. - Literally unplayable and with no explanation or context to anything. - No Steam Trading Cards. - Overpriced since it offers nothing to enjoy or learn. Full review here - https://youtu.be/QbUSYnCnmyY I am all for supporting early access, but when the developer clearly copies from major franchises (Bioshock) and charges $5 for a game with no actual content it makes them seem like a massive scammer. This game has no playable content at the moment. Consisting of 5 maps that feel like the love baby of a childs time whilst playing Garys Mod. This game has nothing to offer. The developer has shoved in several key hunts, whilst an audio book from Don Quixote plays. Nothing in the game makes sense and not in a surreal way. In a pathetic attempt to make a video game. Don't bother....
Not even a game. SERIOUSLY. Don't trust positive reviews. The game was a collection of 4 rooms thown together with random assets, very little of it was actually interactable. None of it was scary.
NO *dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun*
Oh look... I've created art! Uhm... no! You've clicked some assets together! That's it!
I am really dissapointed. I tried to like this game, but there are still lot of bugs. - not possible to save a game - really big problem! - lot of crashes - you can die by touching (!!!) the wall, but if you fall from a big high you are OK - no tutorial and poor settings
Nothing makes sense in this game, it is literally 3D models just thrown all over the place. The author calls it an abstract adventure, but you can tell it was like the programmer just took a 3D model tool and w/e assets he could find and stick them in. That said the "game" itself is full of faults. You can get stuck while walking up a staircase, you can get stuck on an edge, you can get stuck inside a room you can't reopen cause a ball rolled off the switch. The puzzles are annoying, pushing a huge butterfly statue that flips around in all different directions is a tiring process. It gets stuck on everything. Pushing a rolling ball that seems to defy gravity and friction is a process much like listening to nails on a chalkboard. I somehow managed to string through all 5 "chapters" but I wouldn't recommend anyone taking the plunge on this, you will just waste your short time. There is no story the voices just speak of random ♥♥♥♥ and even better you can activate them without the other turning off so at one point I had 5 voices going on that sounded like I was in the middle of a NY crowd. Also huge negitive for not adding sound settings in the main menu, I hate to have to go to my mixer and turn down the sound for the game, the game also is titled "Unreal Engine" so that gives you an idea of the polish that went into this. F for effort.
While looking good on screenshots the game is in very 'crude' state as on the moment i write this review. Implementation of mouse input inversion and control keys reassignment will turn my attitude to 'neutral' - now i don't recommend this to anyone...
Good game with nice surroundings, very mystique but still scary looking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihWzANd2Y-g
