I'm having a blast with this game and recommend it wholehartedly. It's not a big budget game, but a project by a really small studio, and as such it has a limited scope.
What it is
A single player, turn based, rougelike, open world, tactical, space RPG. The gameplay really feels like a classic turn based rougelike, but unlike Xenomarine (the first title from Fourfould Games), you're not lurking in a dungeon like derelict ship, but have an open galaxy, with many sectors and procedural generated missions, amidst a war between 3 main factions, and a bunch of political tensions (and more sidequests) with minor factions. It has been compared to Drox Operative and I feel it's a fitting comparison, as in both games the player controls a single pilot in a ship, that gets to influence a massive galaxy with warring factions. In that sense it also bears similarities to The Last Federation. I particularly like the movement and combat mechanics. With out being anything out of this world, it manages to represent complex air maneuvers, energy and heat management mechanics (you can overheat your ship or run out of fuel), shield and hull damage, etc. You also get a skill tree for your character and ship upgrades, including different hulls and a number of systems and weapons.
On the down side...
Graphics are Ok, ship designs are cool and work well, avatar creation is also cool, but this is an indie title and don't expect anything to take your breath away eyecandy wise. The devs clearly are catering for a niche audience so if you're not into turn based roguelikes this might not be the game for you. The game still is on early access, but it's already halfway trough the roadmap. Sadly the main story is not done yet. I appreciate that both this and Xenomarine run natively on linux.
This is an early access review I really like this game. It has a long way to go yet before it is the complete article, but man it ticks a lot of boxes so far. Love the turn based theme ... loved the ability to mix & match your ships modules/weapons to your ideal specification. Graphics are pretty decent ... just the game is crying out for story line and/or sandbox mode. The dev is pretty active, which bodes well for the future :) Kinda reminds me of Car Wars( old Games workshop board game ) , but in space ps For the price , well worth a look
It's true that I only played for 90 minutes before leaving this review but if you knew how badly I had to use the bathroom when I first started this game and how easy it was to forget all about that for an hour and a half... I watched about an hour of Relic Space gameplay on YouTube last night and knew I was going to buy it when it came out today. It might be turn-based but it's fast-paced and the world itself is bustling with meaningful NPC activity. This is one of those indie gems that's filled with quirky ideas and interesting mechanics that the devs cared about making accessible, optimized, and fun. Even the music is good; not that quasi-dreamy background noise most space games throw in as an afterthought. I actually bought the soundtrack during the launch day sale and that's odd for me. In my limited experience, this is a good buy even at its very modest full price. Now that my bladder is empty, I'm going to settle in and really enjoy this purchase.
A lot of fun and surprising depth for a space strategy game. It is kind of interesting that you do missions to raise faction status and military\economic victory. Also as your missions increase your status and you research relics you get better gear and ships. Great game.
This game is a cool idea and fun for me when it works right. Unfortunately it has a lot of problems such as bugs that mess up your run and overtuned enemy scaling. It's also very repetitive.
Very satisfying!
Some very cool ideas here. Game plays smoothly and cleanly. UI is a bit rough around the edges as is to be expected in early access. There seems to be enough depth to justify the price, based on what I've seen thus far. Certainly worth picking up as-is and based on the improvements since playing the demo off and on since last year, I fully expect it will only get better!
Thumbs up bec. of the challenge to survive an unfair(at least in my playthrough) war of factions. You are the nail, something big (as Destiny?) is the hammer.
I think this is a good game, saw it on YT and bought it. Wish there were a "mid" option for recomendation but anyways: The problem with the game is that it ALWAYS uses 99% of the graphics card power, even in the main menu and even when FPS are limited, which is INSANE. This game should only use 20% or so of a 1070, and i have a RX 6650 XT, which is comparable to a 2070, so much better than a 1070, and still 99%... Had to refund it or i couldn't afford the next energy invoice, sorry guys, as said, i bet it is a good game.
This is really cool game. I've played a number of space rpgs (starsector, star traders frontiers, drox operative) and ended up bouncing off them for various reasons. With starsector it was fleet fitting, with star traders it was crew management (keep in mind i didn't give these games too much of a chance so don't take my views as meaningful). Relic space on the other hand seems perfect in its simplicity with each dimension of the game. Combat is cool. The movement bonus you get makes combat interesting. It feels very fast paced. Really looking forward to the development of this game. Being an inhabitant of a 4x world, with the parameters of the society of origin with respect to xenophobia, militarism (i.e. being a civ in stellaris) is a dream of mine. I really hope the rpg aspects of this game are developed.
