1922...The Big Apple...Mugsy's turf got plucked by a gang of trouble boys. The ever-lovin' jazz rabbit is gonna jump on heads and clip those goons. He'll bop his way to the biggest boss and take back what's his or get zotzed, ya' follow? Soundtrack is the bee's knees - truly hep and jake.
God Mode
In Redhot Rabbit you’ll fight through countless enemies on a side -scrolling plane by either stomping (jumping on them) or shooting carrots at them. Collect Hearts for lives (which are abundant) so you won’t die so easily and collect carrots for ammo. As the game progresses, your jumps will increase in height which will make it easier to jump across far off ledges and higher platforms. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2850192449
Which Way Is Up?
Gameplay-wise that’s just about it and is simple to understand without much instructions and there is a sparse of it in here. Which makes knowing what to do a little confusing at certain times, notably the Tunnel area where there’s a cycle of cars driving towards you almost nonstop. Took me a little while to figure out how to progress after clearing the area of goons.
Good Ol’ Times
Artstyle, audio and general feel to the game is what makes it for me. The music is a throwback to the charming 1920’s music which helps set the tone of the game well. Akin to cartoons in the early days, enemies are wacky and silly looking with some basic moves to them which makes the game rather easy. So progression won’t be the issue here as it is possible to just stomp on enemies until what I think is the final boss. That’s when all the carrots you’ve saved up will come to good use. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2850192640
Not-Stop Hits
As the gameplay is simple, that’s where you can feel the shortcomings come once in a while. Hitboxes feel a bit off, it’s noticeable when fighting the big tall boss, his hits seem to reach further than what you expect and his attacks remind you of the first time you play a fighting game, Spammy McSpam a lot. You can find yourself stuck or clipped into things or enemies when you’re in a corner. That double jump sometimes either doesn't carry you far enough or somehow carry you further than you’d expect. Your movements feel floaty which can be a benefit at times. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2850192806
Final Thoughts
For what it is Redhot Rabbit is a decent game with some style in terms of its atmosphere and what it is trying to be. Sure there’s some junkiness to it but in all it doesn’t affect much to the point of frustration as the game is lenient that it throws tons of lives and ammo at you. It’s just so reminiscent of the past in an over the top & silly manner that you rarely expect what is going to happen, where you’re going next which makes it interesting.
Pros: -Graphics -Variety of enemies -Low price -20's music Cons: -Character feels sluggish when jumping or shooting. -Sometimes you don't understand what is happening on screen. -Inconsistent life and ammo (carrots) system. Personally I got close to what I think, was the end, but I ran out of carrots so I couldn't beat one of the bosses, leaves me with a bittersweet taste, positive considering the price.
Core 2 Quad q6700, 6 GB ram, GeForce GT 440 ost https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2856338164
A fun and very thematic game that gets straight to the point. It's a one-shot platformer where the pace and difficulty ramp up towards the end. It is a little difficult to tell which way to go in a couple of places but that's the only gripe, particularly for the low cost.
Redhot Rabbit is an excellent little platformer for only $1. The controls are simple and easy to understand: jump, go left and right, slam on the ground, and shoot at the enemy. You can also configure it to work with a controller and Steam Deck. It runs and looks excellent on the Steam Deck. The controls need to be configured to work. You can pick how you want it set up, but I went with: A as jump, B as slam on the ground, R2 as shoot carrots, and the right analog stick as left and right. A is left, and D is Right. As you go through the game, you collect hearts and carrots. Hearts give you more life, and carrots let you shoot more enemies. I initially forgot I could shoot enemies, but I found hitting the enemy's head fun. I would recommend trying to do a run with only hitting the enemy's head. I really like the art style of the game. The music and old-school video effect are great. It really looks and feels like an old-school silent animated cartoon. If you plan to make a video on this game, know there is some copyrighted music in the game. The game crashed when I played it on the PC found in the video below; I do not know why. The hitboxes need some work. Overall, I had fun playing, and I think this is worth the money.
