RD Racing

You start the game as the best driver in the world, and you’re about to enter your final race to win it all. But then your team betrays you. Your car explodes, and all the reputation you built goes up in smoke along with it. This forces you to return to where you started, to your old mentor and a low-performance league with weak cars. Races are selected from a map, and the requirement to unlock and play them is your level. This increases with each race you complete and is shown on an experience bar, along with a number indicating your current level. Since the number of races available at your level is limited, you have to replay them several times to earn enough experience. You also have to win races to progress. Levels grant skill points that allow you to permanently improve your stats. These are divided into driving, with options such as acceleration and top speed, weapons, with damage and ammo capacity, and useful perks that increase money and experience gains. Each stat increases only by a small percentage, and you can upgrade each one up to five times, but the improvements are still helpful. The driving is arcade-like and quite floaty, so expectations should be kept in check. You have throttle, brake, steering left and right, and a handbrake for drifting, which is important for taking corners without losing too much speed. However, the tracks are still very twisty, so braking is often necessary if you want to avoid crashing into walls which causes damage to your car. To keep things from getting boring too quickly, weapons are included. These are limited to machine guns and mines, and you refill them by collecting icons on the track. Although you can buy new guns that slightly increase damage, there are only three options available. The only unique mechanic is the ability to unlock a secondary weapon, allowing you to deal damage more quickly. The approach is old-school, with no respawns, so when you or your opponent lose all health, that’s the end of the race. Other icons on the road include money and repairs. Races also reward you with money, which is used to buy new cars or upgrade existing ones. As with skills, each car has five stats that can each be upgraded five times, so you will eventually need to invest in a new vehicle. Five seems to be a recurring limit, as the selection of cars is also restricted to five, and the best ones are locked behind higher levels. Overall, the racing experience is not very exciting or eventful, especially when combined with the repetitive engine sound. Winning is also quite easy, even with the starting car. One strategy is to let opponents pass, allow them to destroy each other, and then clean up what remains. However, if you let them get too far ahead, you may never catch up, as they tend to follow the optimal racing line perfectly. They are so focused on that line that they will not avoid mines or wrecked cars directly in front of them. The most effective strategy is to accelerate immediately at the start, eliminate anyone ahead of you, and then collect ammo icons to prevent those behind from attacking. Most positions are decided during the first lap, after which you only need to finish the race safely. If you are not in first place, you can play dirty by driving in the opposite direction and intercepting other racers on their next lap. The only races where this does not work are those against your betrayers, which take place on a straight road where success depends on speed or luck, as you try to make opponents crash.

As someone who doesn't play a lot of racing games, I'm having a good time with RD Racing so far. The gameplay and the graphics both kind of remind me of Lego Racers for the Nintendo 64. It's very casual-friendly. One of my favorite things about the game is the track design. I'm only about halfway through all the tracks, but the volcano one is super cool. Absolutely loving the guns and mines too. One of my favorite things to do at the start of races is hit the brakes, wait for the other cars to pass, then open fire and eliminate some of the competition early on.

Strongly recommend, the game has the exact chaotic vibe that I love in these kind of racing games, the controls are both smooth and chaotic, the story while simple, keeps you engaged, the designs of the cars and the tracks, that low-poly aesthetic just brings back nostalgic memories of playing Playstation 1 racing games. And even the controls remind me of OG Lego Racers, paired up with the destruction and even destructible environments? Uh, yes! Get this game. Note: Played the game for 2 hours live, but I will be finishing the game in my own time.
