I downloaded the game (i mean for 89 cents i figured it was worth a shot). The game is actually fun, it does need more players, which is why I am leaving this review. The games been out a week, graphics look nice gameplay is fun. There actually was a dev on talking with me about the game. Give it a shot, it's cheap, fun just needs more of us here!
Raptor Territory is a failed Early Access PvP only third person arena brawler where you control a Utahraptor and bite other players to death. The game failed (despite me writing this review only a month after the game launched in Early Access). SteamDB shows a pitiful peak of only 12 players, not enough to fill a server, on just one day, and then numbers dropped sharply to zero. There's more servers for the game than players to play it (although I presume the developers will pull the plug on those when they realise how much it costs to run a game for no players). While it may seem unfair for me to call this a dead game so shortly after launch, this is something that happens time and time and time again... I have written many thousands of reviews for games and everything going on with Raptor Territory has happened with other failed PvP games. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. SteamDB does not lie... it's impossible to find a match in the game, there's no players, it'a already dead. Let's run the autopsy on this dead game walking. Why did this fail? Part of the reason for the game failing was predatory monetization. The DLC costs are ridiculous and insulting. That isn't cool, and gamers hate that crap. The developers made the fatal, lazy mistake of believing that PvP, other players, would be an acceptable substitute for doing the difficult job of adding single player level design, storytelling, NPCs and other rich aspects of designed game content to the game. As a result of this choice by the developers, the game has little to no actual interactive game content. It's a little considered fact that the vast majority of PvP only, multiplayer only games fail. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable subsititue for doing the job of game developers and building a game filled with content. PvP only games must have a huge player base for them to "go viral" and succeed. But with no single player experience to add lasting value to a game, the developers instead chose to bet against all odds that their game would "go viral" without any actual reason for players to want to play the game. Predictably, they lost this bet. While the game appears cheap, it is not. It's evident this a cash grab with a purely insulting level of in-game purchases, hundreds of dollars worth of empty DLC. The game quality itself is particularly poor, and a lot of it looks like it's just asset flips and reskins. Maybe it isn't asset flipped, but it looks like it and has the same general quality level. The developers acted in a highly unethical manner and sold keys to the game to DailyIndieGame so it could be sold as a complete, finished game despite the game being in Early Access. This is often done as a final cash grab/attempt to gouge as much money from an unfinished product before abandoning it and running for the hills. That would make sense considering the game cratered on launch and has no players. There's no real excuse for the lack of ethics from the developers here, deliberately misleading gamers is unacceptable. If you want a good dinosaur game, play Ark: Survival Evolved. You can buy that and all the maps for less than the DLC price these guys are trying to scam gamers into buying.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer seems to acknowledge they did indeed sell the game keys in bulk to a retailer to be included in bundles, but then they deny there was any desperate need to do so. The developer then contradicts themselves and says they did not sell the keys to DailyIndieGame, but that DailyIndieGame is "just another shop". A blatant lie that is easily disproven. https://isthereanydeal.com/game/raptorterritory/info/ You can see here clearly that the game appears in DailyIndieGame Weekly bundle #685. There is nothing in DailyIndieGame on the bundle page that indicates this is an incomplete, unfinished product. Why did the developer try to lie about this easily proven fact? They sold keys to DailyIndieGame for an early access product knowing full well it would be sold as a complete product, in a deliberate and unethical cash grab, regardless of how misleading that would be to gamers. Feigning ignorance here would be no excuse, either. The developer claims they are still developing the product. I never said they weren't, but throwing code at a dead game won't change the fact it's dead. I revisited SteamDB and the data shows player numbers have further declined, with nobody logging on at all in recent days, until yesterday, we see one logon for around 2 hours, presumably the developer themselves. The developer indicates they will continue to throw code at this dead game, because "we learned a much how to do it". My opinion as a game reviewer and enthusiast gamer is that game developers must know how to develop games before they do it, not make it up as they go along. This does explain the terribly poor quality of "Raptor Territory", but it doesn't excuse it. It also goes some way to explain why gamers never adopted the product, leaving it as a dead PvP only game in development hell, with no players. Nothing the developer has said in their needless response has changed any of the facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I do not recommend "Raptor Territory".
Pros: Friendly developer. I bought the game, joined their discord and was immediately offered a steam key for the game to provide to a friend. Very good first impression. The textures are 4k and the game has a very nice realistic look to it. The basis for a system is clearly present. The game's concept is unique and could easily stand out in it's market, though I'm not sure why it isn't free instead of 80 cents as I doubt the developer earns little, if anything from that, but it isn't a negative as it could certainly deliver a good snack with friends. It's control scheme sort of reminds me of the original Primal Carnage, especially as to how the raptor moves. This could be expected as the main developer, Rothir, did actually work on the primal carnage franchise, so this isn't a game made by a random developer with no experience. Cons: Personally I dislike the 4-team system. Every single match you go into, it's divided by 4 teams instead of 2 as usual, making it so anyone who joins out of the tiny playerbase is divided SEPARATELY. This is an exacerbated headache by the fact that there's over 5 eggs you need to eat in capture the egg, a gamemode which the game's servers have forced me into far too many times. There's also no way to see freeroam, atleast in my current experience, as all the game's 4 servers are TDM, Capture the egg, Baby rescue, Trackmap or Festive Meal (the last 2 I have been unable to see as I've been forced into CTE and Baby rescue the majority of times, they are unavailable in singleplayer aswell.) This makes a very concerning precedent as they are already trying to monetize the game, but I presume this is to pay for their official servers. If I were to fix this, I'd separate it into 2 teams instead and lower the count of eggs you need to eat so it isn't a chore, along with fixing the gamemodes. CTE is annoying for me to play. I think, instead of 3 EU servers with the same exact gamemodes, a freeroam official should be added. It advertises itself as a strategic action game but there's little strategy or action to be seen. I generally dislike it's attempts at overcomplicating the game by performing mitosis on the teams, the gamemodes, all that. Most of these issues would be fixed by only keeping Freeroam, Baby rescue and TDM, since baby rescue is basically just a better cte. I'd also like to actually be able to play freeroam alone without having to host my own server for that matter. Game has some significant bugs aswell, such as being unable to see the current gamemode of a server properly, but thankfully that seems to have been noticed and is getting worked on whenever possible. I recommend it because majority of it's sufferings are from lack of a playerbase and it isn't tailored whatsoever to be played in small groupings, which should be fixed during this state. Edit: It isn't Capture the egg. It's conquest the nest. It's nearly the same thing anyways. Edit2: Developer has addressed the issue I had with freeroam, and set EU1 to a freeroam server. I am grateful, however confused that the teams remain in it, since that wasn't to my expectations. Regardless, it's freeroam as described. Spent a good while running around in it and killing AI raptors since oddly enough they feel more balanced there for some reason.
Just played raptor territory and my god tears are flowing down my cheeks. The plot, the gameplay, the graphics, the artstyle the ost my god the ost. All of it was garbage from beginning to end. On my way to the morgue, definitely the most game I've ever played.
Come with friends the shenanigans and team play is so much fun. Enjoyable game if you have a team to play with. The graphics are really clean, controls feel really nice.
You can do 360's with your raptor, I mean, what more can you ask for? The game overall is great, had fun with it on streams. The music and variety of game modes are enjoyable. Wish nothing but the best for the developers' future and looking forward to new updates & features being added along the way!
YES
This game is really fun! the maps are very pretty, the raptors look great, the gamemodes are fun and its overall a great experience and a breath of fresh air for everyone so used to the only dinosaur games being survival games. Although I do have some criticism for it, first is that on the servers the cycling between gamemodes feels a little broken and it will end up giving you the same one several times in a row. For the The Conquerors of the Nest game destroying nests is a little bit janky as well as some of the movement in general. Sometimes the hitboxes for other raptors feel off as well. And my last problem with the game is just that its so empty and the singleplayer mode isn't very good. This game would be much more fun if it had a larger playerbase. Aside from all those small issues this game is honestly really fun and a great time to mess around in with your friends and I highly recommend playing it just for that, hopefully Raptor Territory gets more popular in the future! :D
I decided to buy this game since I'm in love with dinosaurs, mostly raptors, and it's surprisingly cheap. If you have any spare money - please consider buying this game and trying it out. It surely won't hurt your wallet and can be a lot of fun if you get into it. It's still in early access, with bugs and in progress, but it's already playable, and devs visibly love and care for this game, seeing how often there are updates and that they work on it all the time. Visually it's beautiful, there's varietry of maps to play on and a few modes. Of course, this game still needs a lot of work, but for so little, it's already a steal. Plus, this game won't be able to grow if people won't play it and show support, ya know? Hence why, I reccomend trying it out. Who knows, maybe you will decide to keep playing and see this game grow? I sure will.
