Introduction
A 2D strategy game from a top-down perspective that isn’t a tower defense. Now that is something you don’t see very often on Steam. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of defense and offense going on, but it’s packaged in a different scenario than a run-of-the-mill fantasy setting involving the undead and their beef with the plants. Raid on Coasts is about the perpetual combat from the Middle East. A daring Steam debut from Outlaw Wars, a one-man team which relies on player feedback, not just taking advice into consideration.
Story
Two superpowers fighting for control of Yemen and its coasts. Why is it a strategic location worth starting WW3 over, don’t ask me. It’s never properly explained other than shown as an objective on a map. The first and so far only mission implemented in the Early Access is a raid featuring both the amphibious landings of the Russian Federation or the rapid response from the land-based army belonging to the United States of America. I’ll remind you that Yemen isn’t part of NATO and it has been plagued by civil war since 2015. Neither the insurgents nor the Yemeni government, are playable factions at the time of this writing. With motives unclear, we’ll simply move on and presume that this scenario is part of the unforeseen future. But not too far ahead, since the armies sport contemporary equipment. Or at least the US troops do, since the Russians seem to be disadvantaged from the start. While still in use (as far as historical accuracy is concerned), the T-72 is outclassed by the M1 Abrams in nearly all regards. Sure, a main battle tank won’t secure towns (you need infantry for that purpose), but they’ll “level to the ground” any opposition so they’re ideal for the modern frontline.
Graphics
Raid on Coasts is being powered by the Construct 2 Personal Engine. I don’t mind the change of scenery from Unity, but any game that doesn’t have screenshot support, has already shot itself in the foot. Fortunately, the developer has addressed this issue within a few days of my review. Other than that, the sprites are skillfully drawn and they prove that even an RTS can benefit from a more unconventional perspective. The unit roster will receive more troops in subsequent updates, but even as it stands now, you’ll have plenty of options which sadly don’t take into account the map diversity just yet. As in, that single map can only get you so far. The Yemeni coastline will surely accommodate more battlefields soon enough. Just be aware that the current version of the game is indeed in an Early Access phase.
Audio
No narration or voice acting, but the troops on both sides of the front feature a handful of repetitive lines that really need some attention from the developer. Perhaps the Russians will actually speak Russian for a change? This isn’t the infamous airport level from Modern Warfare 2 afterall. A proper soundtrack at this point, would be like icing on the cake but one can still hope, right?
Gameplay
Top-down or not, the gameplay will be familiar to all strategy fans. It’s a real time formula that places less of an emphasis on strengths or weaknesses and more on sheer numbers and how fast you can cover/conquer the ground. There are three types of strategic locations: big or small villages and oil refineries. The former may be converted into military bases capable of recruiting all the units you need, while the latter shall keep the mechanized segment of your army, on the move. As simple as that. Securing those locations depends more often than not on the size of your dispatched forces, but having some bazooka/RPG squads tagging along for the ride, is a sound plan. They’ll make a short work of the tanks which are the true threat to your success. Air units are implemented in a limited manner. Bases can be upgraded to 3 maximum tiers and on the last one, you gain access to AI-controlled attack helicopters which defend the HQ or bombing runs from jet fighters stationed on aircraft carriers off the coast. So the Artificial Intelligence really won’t allow much room for maneuver, if you thought that you can control warplanes directly. On the map I managed to play and test out, most matches last for about half an hour, depending on the difficulty you select before starting the mission. You can obviously choose between the aggressors or the defenders while the newly added Steam Achievements should unlock after reaching the correspondent objectives.
Verdict
I’m really glad that Outlaw Wars slashed the initial price tag in half to better reflect the Early Access stage its project finds itself in. The potential for a full fledged campaign is there and within time, I shall readdress the rating to reflect that. The game is in dire need of a lot of things, starting with more maps and missions. An expanded unit roster, especially for the ill-equipped Russian faction, would certainly reflect the current historic status of ongoing modernization. The T-14 Armata, for example. That tank would make target practice from a T-72, to say the least. Edit: Screenshot support has been added.
Strong Points
+ Pleasant graphics. + Steam Achievements. + Interesting concept and execution.
Weak Points
- Needs more maps/scenarios. - Limited sound selection. - No Steam Trading Cards. Rating 65/100
This review was submitted for Elite Giveaways, through the generous contribution of Erander♣.

Raid on Coasts
...is a real-time strategy game. Tensions have reached the breaking point when war erupts between Russia and the United States of America over control of the Middle East.
⚙ Game Description & Mechanics ⚙
You start with a small squadron of soldiers in a map with about a dozen controllable outposts, each of which will supply you with funds, fuel and a spawn point for your troops and vehicles. The goal of the game is to control all the outposts, fortifying them and using their resources to have your troops advanced further. However, there is no set path between outposts, the enemy is free to circumvent your defenses and attack from any direction. Once your soldiers have moved into an outpost, they must hold it a few seconds for the control to take over, after which they should move immediately to the next outpost, as your opponent will not wait to move theirs. When you've taken control of the outpost, you must renovate it, fortify it, and put it to work, selecting what trooper or vehicle to build within the confines of your budget. You must also defend it, or enemy troops will just walk in and take it from you.
☺ What I enjoyed ☺
You have a good variety of units to choose from, each with strengths and weaknesses, and you must carefully balance those. If your machine gun humvees face an armored tank, they're done for unless they have anti-tank backup. So while it's a race against the clock to control the outposts, it's also an anticipation game: you won't be able to build everything, so you have to figure out what your opponent will build to have the appropriate offensive or defensive equipment. Having to capture fixed outposts, rather than building your own bases and buildings, makes it very different than typical real-time strategy games as it adds capture the flag elements to your tactics. After all, both factions are invading an established territory, so it makes sense to proceed in such a way.
☹ What bothered me ☹
There is a distinct missed opportunity in how the map is controlled. For the most part, the map is flat and open. Where are the mountains, the forests, the choke points? There is no way to have a proper control over the map as troops and vehicles can just drive in the open and go anywhere. Not that the opportunity to build fortifications and control passages would make much sense, as the single strategy to win this game is to rush: rush takeover the outposts, rush attack the enemy, every second that passes are seconds they are building more troops, so you can forget the idea of building a large army and taking your time meticulously conquering the map. The game lacks any polish. Game menus are basic, rough-looking placeholders. There are little to no graphical options - not that the engine appears to make use of any special video technology, but...not even a resolution setting, really? The game's screenshots featured green and red lasers, and I was honestly hoping for a slightly more over-the-top G.I.Joe-esk setting, but those are not in the game that ends up offering a generic (if cliché) Russia-versus-USA setting in a semblance of real-world conflict.
My Early Access Verdict: ★☆☆ - "Still a long way to go..."
When playing this, I found myself remembering playing Z some 20 years ago, taking over outposts that had different strategic values, controlling the ways in and out of each outpost's zone by roads and bridges, and having fun in a wacky setting. But it is not the experience offered by Raid on Coasts. Disregarding the bugs (such as the game not launching until I reboot my PC and try again), it is an unfinished game, missing the "fun" part. Yet, it is too soon to be considered abandoned. Some may argue that the last update is a year and a half ago, but that's exactly what they were saying with the update before that. The game is simply being developed slowly, so it may yet be redeemed. I will keep an open eye, and will gladly revise my review if it deserves it. ————————————————————————— This was just my opinion. If you found this review helpful, please consider giving it a thumbs up, and feel free to check out more of my (purely opinionated) reviews.
This is way to early access to enjoy. The game is currently broken and left me confused on what to do and how things are suppose to work. I won a game on medium difficulty without getting out of the boats, because I didn't even know how to do it. Even though I received this game for free, I unistalled it right after a few games. This game still needs a lot of love before I would install it again.
It's a good game, you need to be sure you have a good start in your missions, you cant affort to lose to many units at your arrivals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEaI6OsENRg
If you enjoy RTS games then you will like this game. Keep in mind though it is an early access game so there are a few flaws to it that I am sure if mentioned the Dev will do their best to fix the issue in a future update. The current control’s system is limited to up, down ,right, and left to move the position of view. Thankfully you can change what keys are bound so you don't have to stick with arrow keys if you don't like them. Though it would be nice to have the option to bind the reinforcement unit selection and upgrades to specific keys as well rather than having to click each one you want. I am glad to see the ability to select multiple units at once to deploy on a location. The graphics of the game are pretty good for the style of the game. The game runs great other than taking a bit of time to load up. I have seen that many people do indeed like the game and i can understand why. I haven’t come across another game with the storyline that the Dev have came up with for this game. The audio was one thing i liked a lot about the game. The only thing that would have improved on that would have been Russian accents for the Russian troops, maybe even a couple words in Russian thrown in. The Dev’s are always updating the game and making improvements so i would make sure to check in on that often. The storyline for the game is wonderful and keeps me coming back for more. All in all as the game sits at the time of my review I give it a 9. I will continue playing because I enjoy the game and want to see what the Dev do in the future.
While my playtime is only half an hour, that was enough time to see everything as I also beat the game during that time. This is more of a playable prototype than a game right now. There is only the one map and you can play as either side (there are 2 side) but it's really pretty much the same thing just starting on the other side of the map. A lot of the things that have become standards in RTS games are still missing from this one. Very important things too, for example sending units to a point on the mini-map. You can't do that yet. There are not visible hotkeys and no way of grouping units together to a numbered hotkey. The A.I. is pretty unintelligent as of right now, sometimes the soldiers and tanks will just stand there while you capture the base 5 feet away from them. The way they attack bases and stuff seems a bit random rather than like they have some sort of battle plan they are trying to execute. There is no mouse lock to the screens so if you have multiple monitors your cursor can go right out of the game which can be anoyying, but also it seems to cause the screen movement to sometimes not work properly or register that the mouse is at the side of the screen (I guess because it's in another screen??). The game needs to be more clear in giving the player feedback as to what's happening. I was earning money but I have no idea why or where from. I assume the oil pumps but I didn't notice anything when capturing them like some sort of info on how much more I would earn per turn, things like that. The area where you select units to build needs more info and to be more visible. The white icons blend in with the background and were hard to notice. I would love to see a campaign or story as well as many more maps for this. As of right now with just one map and everything else in such an early state I would say to hold off on this game, at least until things are further in development or finished, unless you specifically want to get in on the Early Access. Knowing what I do about the game so far if I was asked if I wanted to buy it now I would say no, but I would love to see how things go and maybe down the road I could recommend this one.
-Quick Review- Raid on Coasts is an independently developed real time strategy game where It's the United States fighting the invading Russians on the same map with three different difficulty levels. -Detailed breakdown review- Gameplay: RTS is a tough genre to try to make a game for. Because on the one hand you have people who played the classic RTS's like Warcraft 1,2 and 3. Or Modern RTS's like Starcraft ... Now that I think of it, the most well known RTS's seem to come from Blizzard, don't they? I guess I've also played Red Alert, I've played Medieval: Total War... The point is: There are a lot of stand out titles in the RTS genre which makes the competition steep. More importantly, as many of us should know by now; we're bad at RTS's. Okay, maybe I can't speak for you, but I do know a fair amount of people who would be inclined to agree.. if you don't you haven't watched the South Koreans play Starcraft. Why this big build up? I just wanted to try to be semi-educational in this review. Raid on the Coasts doesn't have much to it. It's just one map, two armies going at it, has some bugs, the UI is slow and unresponsive, the keybindings are limited, basically everything counting against an actual game being well received, and even more detrimental with an RTS. Furthermore you can only play against the AI. Not that I wanted to play against people online, mind you. I don't need someone to kick me around to put me in my place. I want to get my achievements, get the game experience and run! So as far as goals and objectives go: mission accomplished. Conclusion: I can easily say "I enjoyed playing through this game", but that's because the developer sent me the game through my steam curator so I didn't pay a penny. I installed it, played an RTS for a few levels, and moved on. The question a buyer must consider is: Is the price fair for how much time you're going to spend playing it? I can't really be a judge of that. I always get a good feeling when I'm supporting an indie developer or a small team of developers, but that choice falls mainly on you. If you'd like to see actual gameplay, feel free to check out my youtube video I've attached at the bottom of this review. Thank you for reading, I hope this was of some help to your decision... or at least somewhat entertaining. Unscripted Thoughts Video: https://youtu.be/eOj5wmuGXQ4
While I like the concept of coastal war and raiding strategy, I found none in this game. Also still in early access, the game has one map and can be won in 10 seconds everytime! To make sure, I tried the game several times on different settings/modes and always came out with the same results. I alsofound that the mouse clicks are not always responsive, nor are the deployments/movements of troops. So until more options, maps and updates come out I personally do not feel it is worth the purchase.
trash, glad i got it for free
