Excellent turn based strategy game. I stuck to the campaign which has many different maps that will require different strategies to win. You're given a simple set of buildings that provide different attack/defence/benefits and a few currencies to use making getting started easy. This is also helped by the campaign building your knowledge up and does so very well. Finishing a game however can be quite time consuming if your head gets locked on a certain battle front, which isn't a bad point as it forces you to ask yourself what is the better play. The game looks good, everything that you need to know is very well presented, I faced no bugs or crashes, overall a enjoyable experience indeed.
This is a very hard game. It took me hours to figure out how to beat the fifth level on normal. Am on level 11 now and the game is making my life a misery. In concept it remembers me somewhat of the japanese Go, where parts don't move, but beat the opponent by overpowering them and thus conquer area. The AI has an advantage, as it just goes through possibilities mathematically and will almost always choose the right option, making you look fairly stupid and desperate. Still, when you finally manage to get an edge in and start churning up enemy territory, it feels exhilarating. I highly recommend this game, but this is not for people with a short attention span and/or impulsive gameplay. --- Btw: other reviewers complained about bugs and unfair advantage to the AI etc. I have seen none of that.
A game which makes the brain purr. Very satisfying campaign. A bit grindy at times but what do you expect from a game where all the units cannot move? I found this a truly excellent turn based strategy game. The only issue I had is on Campaign 30 (with 16 players) I was unable to load my savegames which caused me to lose a couple saves before I realised. If you're playing on an older machine set aside a few hours to do that one in one go. Otherwise no complaints.
If you like strategy games, you will love it. A gameplay you never saw before. The campaign is far better than the skirmish. And you need to start with the campaign to understand the game. Spoiler alert: - turn by turn - only tower, no moving unit - All the 9 units are useful and balanced. - You can buy those units with 3 different moneys: 1- money earned each turn depending on your global population (sum of your tiles population) 2- with conquest point (each tile gives one point the first time someone get the control of it) 3- with war point (one point each time you kill an enemy tower) - must of the tower can fight as usual: strength, resistance, range. The specificity is that every tower also has an effect on enemy population and on your own population. -you saw enemy resources, sometimes it's better to wait the enemy move before spending your own money. -the maximum population of a tile depends on its altitude and of its type. The altitude come from -1 (water) to 3. The higher, the better for fighting (you cant hurt an enemy too high). The lower, the better for your population Really a great game!
Very enjoyable strategy game based around tile placement. Good decisions around defense, aggression and economy. Terrain type and choke points are created through a mix of water and terrain height. A side economy based on first to scout, creates an initial race to expand, but requires to care to ensure you can hold your initial gains.
An enjoyable take on the 3X genre. To be successful in this game you need to have an understanding of the strengths / weaknesses of each (building / unit), their limited utility (since they can't move) and a good knowledge of 3X / 4X strategy. Without this it is likely that the game (level) will devolve into a time consuming war of attrition (which is not fun) or (at worst) failure. If you find this happening do yourself a favour - restart the level - re-think your strategy - enjoy a less time consuming success.
Couple first levels are very enjoyable. But after a while it's clear that the normal level computer is a magician, even when I'm generating more money and trying to get something going the computer manages to build enough castles to slow my progress down and it takes hours to churn through one level. After changing to stupider computer, things were almost too easy for a level or two, but now I'm again stuck and no way to make it even easier.
Surprisingly addictive and at a bargain price
