TLDR: Give this game a try, it was enjoyable. I completed this game in around 24 hours and did all the extra content. Radiant Arc handles the JRPG genre well. Combat is interesting and engaging and the story does not detract from the overall experience. While the overall story is standard fair, the writing really shines with how different each character feels and how they interact with each other, it feels natural which is a feat. Having 6 party members in combat at a time is a little daunting at first, but once you get used to all the skills, fun combinations can be made. Also, being able to switch and equip members on the fly makes the combat a fun affair. There are plenty of different pieces of gear that can be found in the games plethora of side dungeons. The best part about the gear is the multitude of passive abilities they have, making equipping all the party members fun. It isn't just a number/stat up, but things as life drain, thunder damage, 10% damage reduction or an innate barrier, it's amazing what you can find. The developer was kind by adding plenty of stat up items which can make the already individually viable characters even more viable and powerful. Also, there are warps at the end of every dungeon to bring the player to the exit - not required but a really nice aspect to streamline the game and to avoid back tracking. PROTIP: Don't sell the wooden sword like I did
Radiant Arc is a fun RPG where you will control a hero named Linky as he goes on a quest to save the world. Yes it is RPGMaker but it is one of the much better RPGMaker games out there and definitely worth a purchase if you like RPG's Pros: -Engaging Characters and story. The antics of the characters had me laughing throughout the game as I was playing. -Good balance. The game properly eases you into the challenges throughout the game. -Nice music! Neutral: -Level scaling of enemies. I'm not a fan of it, but at least this game does it well. Most zones show a recommended level and if you are there, you should be able to complete them if you have decent equipment and use decent tactics. Cons: -I honestly had none except little nit picks here and there, which honestly is probably more my preference than anything. Overall it is definitely worth a purchase if you like RPG's, even at full price.
I received a copy of this game for the purposes of Let's Playing it and it was a ton of fun!
I enjoyed the story. While it contains all the facets of a lovers tale trope from the last 40 years of gaming, that is by no means a bad thing. The art and the playful story is a bed time story that an adult can hear over and over again with spirit of a child. This is a game I would recommend to your standard hero fan or hopeless romantic.
Honestly one of the better RPG Maker games out there. You can tell there was a lot of effort put into it, from the story to the character dialogue, animations, etc. Overall has some great charm to it. I'm very excited to see the direction the game goes in until the very end!
Very good rpg that has a big world to explore with multiple characters.
Brilliant game! Wish there was a part 2 :(
Here's a quick summary of my experience: I've been in the mood for a classic jrpg since i've played the Pixel Remasters before this, and Radiant Arc by far fulfills that need of a classic yet modern jrpg. It has all the classic systems of the old rpgs while not having any of the bad quirks, clumsiness and slowness of the old rpgs. The story is rather impressive, and rather solid, but of course the main point is the game play and man does it deliver. Each of the playable party members are useful, powerful and because they all gain exp regardless if they're in battle, none of them ever lag behind and as such i saw myself often switching the members frequently to match the enemy composition. The balance of game favors the player more so the game is generally an easier time than other jrpglikes. regardless, if you want a classic and casual jrpg with a fun cast of characters, this game is pretty good if you're fine with rpgmaker games :D
Summary
Game Length: I beat the game and completed all side quests in 28 hours. Overall: 7/10 Graphics: 7/10 Exploration: 7/10 Combat: 7/10 Difficulty: 6/10 Progression / Customization: 7/10 Story: 6/10 Music: 8/10 Bugs and technical issues: 10/10
Overall: 7/10
Solid game, better than most rpgmaker games I have played. I don't complete games I don't really enjoy so the fact that I completed it should say something.
Graphics: 7/10
Custom character graphics Custom character portraits during dialog are nice, there are a few hand drawn cutscenes as well. Nice and detailed Mapping There are some very immersive and beautiful maps in the game. Some of the inns and other areas feel very homey and add a good atmosphere to the game. Sadly some of the map's beauty is hidden a bit by darkness. Sprites Most sprites are pretty standard rpgmaker sprites. However, there is a good variety of monster battles sprites though so you can tell a number of monster packs were purchased. Day / night The game has a day / night cycle. I didn't really care for this and just ended up sleeping at an inn so that I was always playing during the day time so that it was easy to see the maps.
Exploration: 7/10
Semi open world The game transitions from continent to continent as you progress through the main story. You have the opportunity to explore each continent which is filled with a bunch of optional dungeons with bosses and treasure. After you get the airship the whole world opens up and there are a lot of side quests and side areas to complete. Immersiveness The optional dungeons and chests on the overworld aren't tied into the story or side stories so they kind of take away from some of the immersion of the world for me. I think adding a bit more story for each of them would be good for the world, make it feel larger, more cohesive, and less game-like. Encounter rate Monsters are visible on both the open world and dungeon maps so you can explore without having to fight monsters constantly which is nice.
Combat: 7/10
Standard, but fun Although the combat is pretty standard rpgmaker combat it is better than many rpgmaker games. You have some pretty nice abilities that feel good to use which I feel is really important. You mostly use MP based abilities, although there are SP (gained over time in combat) abilities as well usually the fights don't last long enough to use high cost SP abilities. You have multiple rows which affect some stats and the front row can block melee attacks from hitting the back row so tanks matter.
Difficulty: 6/10
Early game difficulty The difficulty feels very good at the start, tough, but not impossible Mid game difficulty The game gets a bit easier mid game, but still fairly difficult. Late game difficulty Late game was a bit too easy for me. I did a ton of optimization and found some very effective combos so your mileage may vary.
Progression / Customization: 7/10
12 Party members You have 12 party members to create a team of 6 out of. They each specialize in different areas from dmg absorb / reflect tank, dodge tank, ranged dps, magic dps, gun dps, party buffers, etc. Gear variety The best part of progression is the gear variety. You constantly receive interesting gear with different effects throughout the game even early on in the game. This is nice because often games have boring gear until the late game. Here you actually have to make decisions based on what types of stats and effects you want on each character. Skills You acquire and upgrade skills via ability points. While this is nice, it isn't too interesting since you get a large amount of points and skills have level requirements so I felt there wasn't a lot of choice here. I just unlocked skills as I got points. I would like to see more meaningful choices given to the player here.
Story: 6/10
Good quality story scenes The story scenes are well animated using the sprites and you can tell some work was put into them. Character dialog THe character dialog is fun and interesting. You get a decent feel for the large cast of characters and their different personalities can be pretty fun. Standard good vs evil The story is a bit too standard good vs evil for me. I like more complex stories which don't start out with a big good vs evil dynamic right when you start the game.
Music: 8/10
Beautiful soundtracks Some of the best soundtracks I have heard in an rpgmaker game. Lots of different music and the tracks fit the areas well. The music really helps create some immersion in the areas as you explore them.
Bugs and technical issues: 10/10
Bugs are rare I rarely encountered any bugs. I think I found one missing collision on a wall and that was about it.
