Puzzle Chronicles is if Dungeons & Dragons was a match 3 game. The matches are very slow moving, and like most match 3 games, a lot of winning is based on luck, which in a story driven game is a real hindrance. You gain experience and money each fight and when you level up you can increase some stats. You get a pet that can be upgraded by playing a mini game, though it only seems to be in the first area, and I can't go back there, so my dog monster is stuck. I'm assuming there's other places eventually but I'd have to actually play it enough to get that far. The problem is, I get the feeling the game wants me to grind, and that's nothing but tedious in a slow moving game based on chance. Heck, it's tedious in most faster paced and more fun games. I got to a spot where the enemy had some broken abilities that he was using constantly that tipped the scales in his favor severely. The best I could do is delay my impending loss. So my options are to grind and hope that helps, which it won't cuz all abilities that might help are tied to my pet monster leveling up - search for treasure that might help, but more often than not, I find something I already have. (Yes, you do get all sorts of gear to equip to help buff your character) - or I can just keep trying to fight the bad guy until I actually get lucky enough to win. None of that sounds remotely fun to me, so I'll be moving on. It's honestly not a bad game, just a bit too tedious and maybe a little too hard for a game based around luck.

A bit of a frustrating mess. There's little chance of a come back once a battle is swung in one side's favour, and that can be made even worse with breaker RNG. The game's fundamentally flawed at the core mechanical design level. The rest of the polish of the game also isn't exactly stellar either. You might find decent value out of it for the price if you picked it up on a 90% off sale, but still probably too unreliably frustrating to be worth it.
Whack
This game is "Okay", I remember playing it someplace else before, but I don't recall having the difficultly that I'm having with it right now. I think I played it before with a controller, and that was fine. Right now, I'm trying to play the game with a keyboard & mouse and it is a miserable experience. The controls are terrible, using the mouse is a shoddy control that is limited and poorly responsive, and the KB controls are absolutely stupid with no way to remap them. What could be a simple and fun game of this genre is transformed into an annoying and frustrating mess. I wanted to just play and enjoy this game, but the controls for KB & M are just too unforgivably bad. I could make comments about game play, like the slow walking everywhere, or how the combat doesn't make much sense to me, but honestly who cares about any of that when the core game play is so horribly hobbled by unbelievably bad game controls that are from unforgivably bad game design choices. At least let people remap the KB controls so that they can remedy your bad decisions or so that they can customize them for their personal preferences or limitations. Just no excuses for this sort of thing, really. So, unless you have a controller or game pad of some sort to use with this game, I would give it a hard pass.
I mean, it would be even funny for some little degree if it was clear the point of it all. You get this snake opponent at some early point that farts some green stuff on you and the game is literally over by then. Ok, then what? Can I fart something back? Should I farm something to beat it?
I don't generally bother with reviews, but this game is a fun little time-waster. If you're a fan of Robert E. Howard's character Conan of Cimmeria that has been the subject of novels, comic books and movies then you'd probably like this games story-line as it borrows heavily from the numerous Conan origin stories. Also the puzzle gameplay is not terribly complex. Just enough to feel like you aren't just going through the motions and that some level of skill and planning is needed to win. The artwork in the game is well done and fits the story well. Also the game in my experience has proved to be very stable. I have encountered no bugs, crashes or other bs that a lot of games subject players to. So if casual puzzle games with cool artwork tickle your fancy, this is a great buy especially if you catch it on sale. As always have fun :) edit 12/30/2019 Having read some of the other reviews here and the complaints about gameplay... there is something you need to know about this type of game, it is a casual game but that does not mean that you run from each mandatory encounter skipping all "non-mandatory" side quests and all exploration in a rush to complete the game as quickly as possible. It is simply not how this type of game is meant to be played. You should play the mini games several times to get some extra items and make your character stronger, take the time to level your character in the optional dungeons, use the trainer to boost your skills when you have extra gold. This type of game is not a race to the end but rather a pretty journey that you take your time with. Level your character, get better gear, learn the puzzle system, give yourself time to feel powerful, it's just about having fun and being someone you will never get the chance to be IRL. The reality is that it doesn't take that much time to become completey OP and roast al comers so you can enjoy the story.. you just have to work your character a bit as mentioned previously. There are even secret battles to be found if you just take a little time.. I mean I just pasted Anubis earlier tonight! if you know anything of ancient Egyptian god beliefs then you know that's pretty cool. My point is don't buy into the whiners, I have played many puzzle games and this one, although perhaps not as in-depth as some I have played, certainly deserves its place in my Steam Library
A pleasant memory from the past
One of my favourite games of all time. I wanted a puzzle game which was unique, interesting, had plenty of depth, and was entertaining and fun. Story cut-scenes are very Disney, but also very charming. It's crazy how an truly brilliant game like this doesn't have millions of rave reviews. I would LOVE to see a sequel. I do recommend playing on a larger screen if possible. My one complaint is that it's sometimes distracting when you wanna enjoy the combat action at the same time a juggling gems!
