i had a lot of political pet peeves but very enjoyable read
Probably the most ridiculous, over the top visual novel I've ever played. A girl teams up with her friend to build up a fanbase / socialist nation of clown people that spreads across the planet, overthrows most governments and spends half of the game at war with the USA. Only to break down, leave it all behind and get married on a getaway island while the rest of the world is in shambles. How does one come up with all this???? In all seriousness though: It has its overarching message (albeit hard to discern through this game's insanity), the writing is phenomenal and the music is simply the selling point for me. Give it a play if you want a fever dream of a playthrough.

The great thing about Psycholonials is that whenever it's bad, it's bad in an interesting way. I really want to review this as something seperate from Homestuck, but it's a bit difficult given that the author alludes to Homestuck multiple times within the work. Whatever, I'll try. Psycholonials is a time capsule of a very specific type of online (trans) anarchism circa 2021. And I do mean very, very specific. It is for this reason that, despite ideologically disagreeing with many of the ideals proposed by this game, I still reccomend it, because it works very well as a period piece. My ideological issues with this game could take all day to go through, so I'll leave it at this. Despite being about an (alledgedly) socialist revolution taking place on the island of Nantucket, and spending a fair amount of detail going into how a socialist revolution could take place on an island right under the nose of the U.S. empire, the game makes exactly zero references to the Cuban Revolution whatsoever. I wouldn't be so irked about this if the game wasn't so thematically concerned with islands and socialism and how to circumvent the boot of the US colonial empire. I mean, it's called Psycholonials for a reason. The game literally brings up the US embargo of their breakaway island state as a plot point, doesn't reference the real-world ongoing example of a socialist island state being under a U.S. embargo, and shows a complete lack of understanding about how embargos work. I could go on! It is genuinely quite frustrating how little the writer understands about socialism, communism, or even anarchism, given how much of a plot point they want to make it. Still, the fact that I can even have that critique about this game means that the author (who i am trying and failing to seperate from their work) was at least attempting to say something interesting, even if, in my opinion, they failed to fully execute on that. Zhen and Abby are very compelling characters, and the way they are written feels very honest. I don't regret reading this visual novel. I got something out of it. Lastly, I am reccommending this because you can just get it for free. I mean, why not try it? Its fun reading it for free in an afternoon. Also the soundtrack is fantastic. I love Clark Powell's work.
its interesting
go play this IM BEGGING YOU
Una historia llena de politiqueo pero muy interesante, los sentimientos de la protagonista y su amiga se sintieron muy reales y las quiero mucho, recomendado 100%, es gratis asi que no pierdes nada :)
Playtime is inaccurate, as I played mostly on the IOS port. I don't recommend that port, as it is buggy. Audio would only play through a Bluetooth device and sometimes saves would be unplayable if made in the wrong place. This version seems to work quite well, I did not experience any issues. Legitimately baffling how good this is. While very interesting in their own right, the author's previous works tend to have wonky, drawn out pacing, abandoned/non-sequitur story arcs, and often lack sincerity when the story needs it. This visual novel addressed nearly all of my dislikes while keeping the strengths of steadily increasing scale, fascinating characters, consistently subverted expectations, and a very absurdist sense of humor. The main story dealing with themes of colonialism, soft power, survival, and the tendency of revolutionary movements to get ahead of themselves is executed well. The hyperbolic, rather cynical portrayal of leftist movements is also quite amusing, even if a bit depressing.
The subtler meta-story of the author's previous work, Homestuck, leading to a bizarre cult-like atmosphere in it's fandom that is best left alone is also pulled off well. The meta story is even more fascinating as of recent, as Hussie over the years since the release of this visual novel has made some decisions regarding Homestuck that not many are happy with, to understate things. These decisions seem to have diminished their reputation to a degree that is going to be hard to recover from. The character arc of Zhen abandoning her "movement" due to it growing increasingly amoral and out of control and the very obvious allegory of the Jubilites representing the Homestuck fanbase really paints an unflattering picture in context. After finishing this, I can't help but think that everyone, including Hussie, needs to leave Homestuck alone, at least for a good while. It seems Hussie is going the opposite direction Zhen did, which I expect will fascinate me for a long time as I pick apart what is going on in this story beyond what I already understand.
That being said, I cannot recommend this VN enough. There aren't many political dramas featuring vaguely socialist clowns, amusingly outdated pop culture references, and of course horses. If that sounds interesting to you, free (at least at the time of writing) is a damn good price.
Why is this game straight up a masterpiece
