Uses Pennywise's publicly available English Patch. The work he and his team did on the game is the biggest technical effort present here, as this release is an emulated version of that. Tried running it on a 4 year old version of bsnes and it works better. Not only that but I noticed some inaccuracies. One of the tentacles of the first boss doesn't display properly which is kind of a big deal since you'll be receiving damage without knowing what hit you. In the subway section of Track 2 some of the enemies latched onto the passing trains don't show up. The second boss' projectiles don't show up. That's about where I stopped playing so there might be more. The UI is pretty poor, I've seen bootleg DVDs from 2005 with better UI. The manual is a nice bonus, but it's untranslated and even has some truly puzzling stuff like the control graphics being removed. I imagine this is because of Nintendo copyright over SFC controllers, but instead of replacing it with a generic controller graphic, the controller picture is absent and the controls are painted over with some MS Paint squares. Shockingly slapped together without much care, even for a low budget release.
Edit: The emulation issues on the first boss have been fixed. Thanks dev! I generally recommend ALL of Ratalaika's/Edias ROM-in-a-box setups, and this is no different. The emulation is built on Ares, which uses Byuu/Near's SNES core. As such, the emulation quality is state-of-the-art (And properly credited). The UI is simple, clean, and has all the features you could ever want. Also, it's neat that there's now an official English translation! The price is a bargain, as the original cart is usually ~$50. Psycho Dream itself is great, particularly if you like obscure Japanese titles. Check the SNESdrunk video for good review of the game itself.
Directed by Kenichi Nishi who would go on to design Moon Remix: Rpg Adventure, you’ve stumbled onto one of his early works. In an ideal world you would find this randomly in a library or in a less ideal world a used games store. Unfortunately game collectors have hoarded all of the copies of this game making it a huge luck that you’ve stumbled onto this game through steam. This game has that 80s-90s old school anime feel that you’d find while late night watching something like vampire princess miyu. The plot is an early disaffected people lose themselves in virtual reality and must be freed by someone else. With save states the game design stands up well in modern day. The sprite work and design is interesting. The best way to play this is to buy or download it and immediately play it. Look up a longplay if you get stuck on stage 6. Getting a legal translation and copy of Psycho Dream in 2025 wasn’t on my radar but I’m glad it got rereleased in an accessible legal way. Stop reading this and go get lost in Psycho Dream.
🗼 It's like you spotted a weird unknown cartridge on the store shelf, but since you're partial to retro anime style, you give it a chance without a second thought. It's not the most complex, but definitely an old straightforward action from 1992 (if RIOT sounds familiar, that tells everything you need to know). Simple power-up upgrades, minimal platforming, no secrets, modest duration, sometimes weird hitboxes. Unfortunately, no plot in the game itself, but the controls are fine, the graphics are great, and the mysterious atmosphere is well created, as is the music. The emulation isn't the best, as it has minor graphical bugs and A LOT of slowdowns, which is basically your main enemy (don't know if it was like that on the native hardware). Simple working shell, but the manual isn't even translated (sad). You should understand that this is an EXTREMELY niche release (not even «VALIS» level) from a small dev team. Regional prices are at least present, but if you have doubts about buying, definitely wait for a significant discount, otherwise you might be disappointed.
This release has some visual bugs that could make it a frustrating experience and the Menu UI is quite bare-bones. The included filter options gives easy access to decent CRT and even LCD masks with no need to mess with numerous values to make it look good. The extras which include box and cover art, a jukebox, and the original manual are appreciated but the manual is untranslated and the controls are painted over which is a weird thing. Issues like the first boss only showing one of its many tentacles (EDIT: This has been fixed), the train enemies only displaying after they jump from it and the credits showing behind some of the background layers, could be fixed with a patch and make this a great package for a classic game.
The emulator sucks, the game is mediocre and boring, I beat it under an hour. Riot has a history of generic and great games, but this one is just bad. Music, controls and gameplay sucks. Though Maria is hot, her design reminds me of the robot chick in Jason X, and the plot and concept is not bad. Though this port isn't bad, it's just lacking, dead in the inside. Achievement doesn't add publicly nor it add +1 on your library. It's just another bad port of an obscure game from the same creator of the Valis series.
A beautifully haunting piece of gaming history, unfortunately overshadowed by its even more terrifying emulation issues. Psycho Dream is an extremely interesting, yet unfortunately flawed, action platformer that was originally only released for the Super Famicom in 1992. Even at that time, the game was met with very unfavorable reviews and considered a pretty bare bones experience by comparison. And while sadly I would agree with such sentiments, I think as time progressed people were able to find more appreciation for the title and enjoy it for its incredibly weird and psychedelically designed world. Make no mistake though, as a game ,Psycho Dream is a VERY bland and generic action platformer. It works, but its just not that fun. The hit boxes are all over the place, the level design is almost non existent, and the story is...well, its stuck on the manual... completely untranslated. However if I'm being honest, Psycho Dream seemingly puts its gameplay and level design in the passenger seat while letting its visual presentation, crazy-ass music, and super interesting story, take the wheel instead. This is where I think most people will find their value. And if that sounds worth $6 bucks to you, then go have your fun. But before you do, just be warned...this games emulation is pretty shotty. It graphically doesn't look the best & has a plethora of minor graphical bugs & issues to boot. Nothing game breaking, just layering issues and a title screen that jitters like it has nerve damage. The UI is also just f%^&ing ugly. Its serviceable, but absolutely makes it feel like a cheap knock off. In short, its a cool bit of obscure history with a cool dark theme, wrapped in a generic action platformer and shotty emulation. If your love for the obscure outweigh any of those negatives, then you could do worse than Psycho Dream. But maybe wait for a discount...
